Be it known that` I, RUPERT E. RUNDELL, a citizen of t-he United States, residing at Brooklyn. county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Cigar-Bunch-Filler Feeds,

of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved cigar bunch filler feed. In making'long filler cigar bunches by machinery, it is customary to spread the tobacco for the filler on a feed belt which advances the filler in y sheet form to a device which severs individual charges from the sheet of filler so that they may be. successively enclosed and rolled in a binder to form a cigar bunch. Cigar bunches vary widely in form, and in making certain forms of cigar bunches it has been found desirable lto accelerate the movementlof predetermined parts of the` filler in 1 then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.V

In carrying 'the invention into effect, there is provided means for advancing all parts of a sheet of filler at uniform speed, as is customary in cigar machines, and means receiving filler therefrom and accelerating the movement of predetermined parts of said filler in order to provide more filler in the corresponding parts of the bunches undergoing formation. In the best constructions, a belt of the usual type is used for advancing the sheet of filler to a receivingsupport coacting with which is a plurality of feeding devices for advancing filler along said y support, said feeding devices being yieldingly driven at different speeds. The' parts and devices referred tol may be widely varied in construction within the scope of the claims for the particular devicer selected to illustrate the invention is but one of many possible concreteJ embodiments of the same, and the invention therefore is not to be restricted to the precise details of the structure shown and described.

Referring-to the drawings, 3 is a feed table of thc-construction usnal'in cigar making machines. Overlying the table B is a feed belt 4L also of the usual construction. This feed belt runs over an idle pulley 5 rotating on ajbar 6 supported by the side frame 7 of the lcigar machine in connection with which the device'is used. The belt 4 is driven by 'means not shown but well known in the cigar machine art. The belt functions to advanceall parts of the sheets of fillerat uniform speed. It will be understood that the tobacco is spread upon the belt by the feeding operator in the customary manner. The belt ,4. advances the sheet of filler to a support 8 located just beyond the` idle pulley 5, and at the far end of the support 8 there is provided a knife 9 the function of which is to sever individual charges from the advancing sheet of filler. The knife 9 is operated intermittently vby mechanism not shown but well-known in the art.

vFor the purpose of accelerating the move- -ment of predetermined parts ofthe filler in order to advance more filler to corresponding parts ofthe charge to be severedby the;

knife 9, the following mechanism` 1sy provided. High above the feed belt lthere lis provided a drivelshaft 10 extending across the machine and journaled in brackets 11', 12 and 13 rising from the main frame of the cigar 'machine in connection `with lwhich the device is used. This drive shaft carries at one end a sprocket 14: over` which runs a driving shaft 15 deriving its motionfrom one of the shafts of the cigar machine not shown. Between the bearings 12 and 13, the shaftl() is provided with aseries of collars 1 6 splined thereto, and betweenieach' pair of collars is loosely mounted one 'of afseries of driving gears 17 of different diameters. This series of driving gearsmeshes with a series of driven gears 18, also of'dilferent diameters'and loosely mounted on a bar 19 extending across th-e device and supported in bosses 20-20- Each driven gear 1S carries a sprocket 2l which is keyed thereto. @verruiming the series of sprockets 2l is a series of chains 22 which also overrun idle sprockets 23 loosely mounted on a bar 24 extending across the device.

For the purpose of causing the series of driving gears l? to yieldingly operate the ries of chains 22, there is provided a spring 25 coiled around the drive shaft l0. One end of this spring lies in pocket formed in the, bearing 13 and thrusts against the end wall of said pocket. The other end of the spring bears against the adjacent collar lo. lt will be remembered that all of the collars i6 are splined to the driving shaft and rotate with it. rlhey are, however, free to move longitudinally on the splines. The action of the spring 25, therefore, is to exert pressure longitudinally against the first collar 16, which in turn presses against the first driving gear l?, which in its turn presses against the second collar 1G, and so on down the line until the last collar 16 presses against the unyielding bearing 12. By means of this construction, all of the driving gears are frictionally driven and drive the chains 22 at varying speeds. The chains and driving gears therefor are arranged in accordance with the contour of the bunch charge which it is desired to form and the faster running chains will of course, wherever they may be in the series, accelerate the movement of the filler at that point. By rearrangement of the parts of this mechanism, therefore, cigar bunches of varying contour may be made on the same machine.

In a cigar bunch filler feed, the combination with a filler support, of a plurality of feeding chains for advancing filler along said support, aseries of sprockets carrying said chains, a series of gears of different diameters carried by said sprockets, a drive shaft, a series of collars splined on said shaft, a series of driving gears of different diameters loosely mounted on said shaft one between each pair of collars, and a spring acting to establish frictional contact of said collars and said driving gears.

8. In a cigar bunch filler feed, the combi nation with a feed belt, of a filler support receiving filler from said. belt, a plurality of feeding chains for advancing filler along said support, a series of sprockets carrying said chains, a series of gears of different diameters carried by said sprockets, a drive shaft, a series of collars splined on said shaft, a series of driving gears of different diamo ters loosely mounted on said shaft one between each pair of collars, and a spring acting to establish frictional contact of said collars and said driving gears.
