To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LlVILLi' BE NDT, a citizen of Germany, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in afety"Clips, of which the "following is a specification.

This invention relates to guards in general and particularly to the kind adapted for protection of accidentally losing a watch, pocketbook orlike articles out of the pocket and for guarding such articles against being surreptitiously extracted from the owner.

The prime object of my invention is to provide a safety device of this kind which will be readily operable in so far as the removal of' the article from thepocket and securing it within the pocket is concerned.

Another object of my invention is to proide an inexpensive device of thissort which may notgbe rendered-inoperative by accidental pressure upon the device and require a particular operation for releasing it.

The foregoing and further objects will be more fully apparent from the following de scription and the accompanying drawings, forming part of this disclosure and showing a few preferred forms of my device.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of my device adapted forthe use in connection with pocket books.

Figure 2 is an end view of the operating members of my device, enlarged.

Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view of the gripping member of my device.

Figure 5 is a modified form of my de vice for use in combination with a watch.

Referring to the drawings, numeral 10 denotes the attaching member of my device which may take any desired form adapted to receive various articles intended to be Numeral 11 indicates a pocket book while numeral 12 shows the lining of the pocket;

It will be observed that in Figure l, the attaching member comprises a loop ending into a hook 13 by means of which the loop is closed when the pocket book has been inserted therein. Forming the continuation of the attaching member is a holding and guide member 14, preferably secured to the attaching member by rivets 15 or may form an integral part thereof as illustrated, for instance, in Figure 5.

The latter have a plurality of depressions or indentations indicated at 17 as' -clearlyseen in Figure 8. At the free end of the holding member; an aperture is provided indicated at l8 for accommodating a pin19, forming hinged connection between the holder -and the grip iping member 20. The'latter has a serrated face 21 and in its body and protruding beyond its sides, there is another'pin 22 provided which is adapted to engage either pair of depressions l7 in theholder 1 1. In Figure 5, it will be seen thatthe attaching member 10 is made of one piece with holding member 14. Otherwise, however, this modified form is identical with that shown in Figure 1.

The inoperative position of gripping member 20 is shown in broken lines in Figure '1. In order that the gripping member engages thelining 12 of the pocket, this member is pressed against the lining, whereby pin 22 formerly engaging the outer indentation 17, will now be held in predetermined position by the inner pair of indentations 17. This position is indicated in full lines in Figure 1.

In order to release the device from the pocket, it is necessary to press at the free end of the holder 14, as indicated by the finger in Figure 1, which is pressed against the lining.

In so doing, the entire holder together with the gripping member is forced against. attaching

10 or 10 respectively, whereby the gripping member is forced to assumev its broken line position shown in Figure 1.

The moment the finger releases the free end of the holder, the resilient tendency of the attaching member 10 will bring the silient material andalso theattachingmemholder into position shoWn in Figure 1, whereby the lining 12 is released.

While I have shovvn and described a specific form of my device, be it understood that various changes may be made Within the scope of my invention as long as the principle of changing the position of the gripping member, which is hinged at a fixed point from one defined place into another predetermined position, is adhered to.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A guard, comprising an attaching member adapted to engage an article, a resilient holding member forming a continuation of said attaching member, a gripping member associated With said holding member and facing said attaching member and means provided in said holding member for holding and permitting a restricted movement of said gripping member relative to said attaching member.

2. A guard, comprising an attaching member for engaging an article, a resilient holding member forming the continuation of said attaching member, a serrated grippin member hingedly associated With said hole ing member, means provided in the latter for limiting the movement of and for holding said gripping member in desired relation to said attaching member.

3. A guard, comprising an attaching member, holding and guide means forming a continuation thereof, a gripping member hingedly associated With said guide means, a plurality of restraining means for said gripping member provided in said holding and guide means and adapted to check the movement of said gripping member and to fix it at predetermined position relative to said attaching member.

4. A guard, comprising an attaching member, a holder and guide forming a continuation thereof, a gripping member hingedly associated With said holder and guide, said holder having resilient sides provided with symmetrically arranged indenta tions, said gripping member having means adapted to engage said indentations.

5. A guard, comprising an attaching member, a holder and guides forming a continuation thereof, a gripping member hingedly associated With said holder and guide, said holder having resilient side flanges provided With a plurality of depressions arranged symmetrically opposite each other, side extensions provided beyond the body of said gripping member and adapted to engage the depressions of said holder.
