Description

Patented Oct. 7, 1924.
FREDRED G. GURLEY, OF EWPORT, KENTUCKY.
COMBINATION TOOL.
Application filed August 4,1923. serial no. 655,631.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Fnrmnnn G. GURI'EY, a citizen of the United States residing at Newport, in the county of ampbell and 'State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements' in Combination Tools, of which the following is a specicatlon.
This invention relates to improvements in tools, and has for an object the provision of a combination saw, square, level, plumb, and rule, and rovidin la convenient and useful tool for t e use o carpenters and others.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a square which includes novel means for mounting one of the blades, so that the blade will be out of the way when the tool is used as a saw, may be conveniently moved out of and into osition, and when in use will be yieldingly eld in place.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includesthe following novel features and details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Tn the drawings Figure l is an elevation of the tool with the short blade of the square shown extended by dotted lines,
Fig. 2 is a top edge View,
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 i
Figjt is a'detail perspective view of the short blade, and
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the block.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding arts, the reference character 10 indicates tlie blade of a saw to which is secured a handle or grip 11.
This handle or gri is notched at its front edge and on each si e of the blade as at 12 and located within this notch is a plumb level 13, the spirit of which is visible through opening 14.
The handle or grip is further provided with a plumb level 16 and the spirit of this level is also visible through an aperture 17 and a notch 18.
The back edge of the saw blade 10 is straight as shown at-l9 and is graduated as at 20 to provide a rule, the graduations being preferably upon both sides of the blade adjacent the ed e 19. This edge is arranged parallel with t e level 16 so that the said edge may be placed against a perpendicular wall or object and the tool used as a plumb, the result being read on the level 13. The level 16 may be used as a plane level when the edge 19 is laced upon a horizontal member. The e ge 21 of the saw handle and the edge 19 ofthe saw blade form a right angle, and by placing these .edges against the edge of a, board either edge ma be used as a plumb or as a square, the leve s 13 and 16 functioning in the first instance, while the combined edges 19 and 21 may function as a square,
The, blade 10 of the saw is secured within a notch 22 provided in the vhandle 1v1 and communicating with this notch is a recess 23. Secured within this recess is a block 24: to which is pivotally secured as at 25, one end of a relatively short blade 26. The end of this blade is reduced so as to provide a shoulder27 which is adapted to abut the adjacent edge of the block 24: and limit the movement of the blade in one direction, in which position the blade will be at a true right angle with respect to the edge 19 of the saw blade. The block 24 is provided with a projection 28 which is adapted to enter and yieldingly engage the walls of a recess or socket 29 provided in the reduced portionl of the blade 26 so as to yieldingly hold the blade in extended osition. The relative positions of the projection 28 and socket 29 are such that when the blade is extended as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, the projection will enter the socket so as to hold the blade at a true right angle. The blade 26 however may be folded inward within a. groove 30 provided in the handle 11, the said groove communicating with the recess 23 which houses the block 24. The blade 26 is also graduated as shown.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions, and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. The combination with a Saw blade having a .straight edge and a handle, said handle being provided with a recess adjacent the blade and a groove having one end in communication with the recess, of a ivot block secured within the recess, a relat1vely short blade reduced at one end and provided with a shoulder and pivotall secured to the block, whereby the said bla e may be l swung outward to e rgheangular position when the shoulder engages `the edge of the block, and means for holding the pivoted vblade against inward movement.
2. The combination with a saw blade heving e straight edge and a handle, seid handle secured Within said recess, u relemvely short blade reduced at one end and provided with a shoulder end pivotally secured to the I Marone@ blocllra whereby the blade may be swung out- Ward fno e right-angular position when fhe shoulder engages the edge of the block, and means for holding the ivoted blade agains; lnvvard movement, sei means including e projectlon upon one face of the block and sald pro'ection yieldingly engaging the Walls of a soc et provided in the edgaeenf, fece of 2e the blade.
n testimony whereof I ax my sigueture.
FREDRED G. GURLJEY.
