LUGGAGE CARRIER.
Application filed December 9, 1921.
To all whom it. may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLAon N. Hnnnonn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Richmond Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Luggage Carrier, of which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for holding in position and carrying packages, traveling bags and other articles, and particularly to a device constructed and arranged to be attached to vehicles as to the running board of an automobile, or the like, for the convenience of tourists or car owners in general.
One object of the invention is to provide means for holding the carrier in a preferably vertical position so reinforced as to be without danger of being bent out of shape by the weight of articles retained thereby.
Another object of the invention is to maintain the lower portion of the carrier close to the support on which the same is mounted and to provide means whereby it may be quickly attached to and removed from the support at will without requiring the use of any tool. 7 V
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which may be readily distended at will without undue friction and that may be also compactly folded together when not in use, as for purposes of storage or shipment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a luggage carrier that will be of approved appearance and that will afford increased service, value and strength and that will be supported not only at the ends thereof, but also at the central portion of the same.
With the above named objects and other objects and purposes, which will be hereinafter described, in view, the invention con sists in the construction, arrangement and combination and also operation of parts set forth below, whereby an organization is provided which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and also reliable and efficient in practical use.

Referring particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the round side posts of my luggage carrier and 1 the round centre post thereof. These posts are each held in position by suitable means as by a clamp 14, 4, the upper jaw 14 of the same being constructed and arranged to rest upon a support to which the device may be secured by the adjustable screw-clamp 12 which works through the lower jaw 4 toward the inner face 3 of the jaw 14.
The said clamps 14 4 serve not only to support the posts 1, 1, but the said posts are also adapted in turn to reinforce the said clamps by means of shoulders 2 resting upon the jaws 14 and bythe threaded end of the thinner lower portion 5 of the said posts being upset at 6 exterior of the jaws 4. By this construction the clamps 14, 4 are made very strong and rigid whereby the said posts will always be maintained in a relatively vertical position without any danger of the same being bent or forced out of place by the weight of any of the articles carried in my luggage carrier.
The outer posts land the upper jaws 14 of the clamps attached thereto are also connected by braces 13 to aid in maintaining the posts in position and in strengthening the structure generally.
I provide runners or collars 10 to work on the said posts 1 and also duplex runners or collars 11 to travel on the post 1. Each set of runners 10 are respectively connected with the outer ends of the duplex runners 11 by intermediate toggle levers 9.
In order to prevent the toggle levers from riding up on the said posts, and thereby avoid any danger of loosing from beneath the same any small packages that may be held thereby, I place over the lowest runner 1l-or if preferred over one of the runners 10a washer 8 held in position. by a wire 7 extending through the post 1.
I also preferably provide means for enabling the toggle levers to work with a smooth and easy action consisting of washers 15 at the rivet joints of the same.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the particular use or the exact details of construction slrown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art.
hat I claim as my invention is 1. In a device of the class described, a clamp comprising two jaws and an adjustable clamping-screw adapted to be engaged with a support, a post supported thereby, the said post having means to rigidly engage both jaws of the clamp to reinforce the same, a similar clamp and post, a series of intermediatetoggle levers attached at the ends thereof to the said posts by runners loosely mounted thereon, and means fixed to one of the posts to prevent the. lowest rimner thereon from moving in a vertical direction.
2. In a device of the class described, a clamp adapted to be engaged with a support, a post supported thereby, a similar clamp and post, a series of intermediate toggle levers attached at the ends thereof to the said posts by runners loosely mounted thereon, an

the said toggle levers being made in two sections, the inner portions of which are resp-e tively attached by runners to said third post, and means fixed to the third post to prevent the lowest runner thereon fro moving in a vertical direction.

4. In a deviceof the class described, a clamp comprising two jaws .and an adjustable clamping-screw adapted to be engaged with a support, a post carried thereby, the
said post having means to rigidly engage both jaws of the clamp to reinforce the two outer posts to the adjacent upper jaws of the clamps connected therewith.
5. A luggage carrier for the running boards of automobiles comprising in. combination a lazy-tongs, rigid end frames, means secured to the lazy-tongs surrounding a member of and between the ends of said frames, and means adapted for detach ably securing said end frames to the running board.
6. A luggage carrier for the running boards of automobiles comprising in com bination a lazy-tongs, rigid end frames, clips pivotally secured to the lazy-tongs surrounding a member of and between the ends of said frames, and means adapted fordetachably securing said end frames to the running board. 7. A. luggage carrier for the running boardsof automobile comprising in combination a lazy tongs, rigid end frames, means adapted for securing said end frames to the running board andconnecting means at each'end of the lazy tongs, said means each comprising members surrounding member ofand betweenthe ends of its respective rigid frame.
