AUTOMOBILE JACK.
App1ication filed December 17, 1923.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, STANLEY J. VESELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county or Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple, quick-acting jack for automobiles, adapted to collapse into comparatively small compass when not in use.
The invention is fully disclosed in the description and claims following, reference bein had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a jack embodying the invention, as applied to the rear end of an automobile. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same as seen from the rear, the handlever being in section at 22.
To a suitable base 5 is secured an upright tubular standard 6 provided with a trunnioned head v7. WVithin the tube is mounted a post 8 having a load-carrying head 9. Slidable on the standard is a collar 10, trunnioned at 11 to carry a handlever 12, which for a considerable part of its length is forked, as indicated. The lever connects with lugs 13 of the base by a link 1-1. The slidable collar and the head of the post connect by a system of toggle-levers, 15, 16 and 17. The levers 15 are preferably in pairs, straddling the head of the standard, the inner pair being serrated at 15 to receive the stud 18" of a pawl 18 attached to the hand-lever. Similarly the connecting link 17 is serrated at 17, for the same purpose, the pawl being adapted to straddle this link, as shown in Fig. 2.
The action of the jack is indicated in the drawings. When the lever is depressed the sliding collar moves downwardly. This draws together the toggle-levers 15, which Serial No. 681,087.
action forces the post upwardly, elevating the vehicle wheel 19, as shown. The action on the weight is sudden, owing to the multiplying effect of the toggle. As the weight is lifted, the pawl engages by gravity, and holds it at any desired height. When the lever is released, the jack may collapse to the reduced dimensions indicated by the dotted outline in Fig. 1.
.Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a jack, a tubular standard, a base therefor, a post slidable in the standard, a collar slidable on the standard, toggle-levers connecting the collar and the post, and a ligand-lever connecting with the collar and ase.
2. In a jack, a tubular standard, a base therefor, a post slidable in the standard, a collar slidable on the standard, toggle-levers connecting the collar and the post, a handlever pivoted to the collar, and a link connecting the lever with the base.
3. In a jack, a tubular standard, a base therefor, a post slidable in the standard, a collar slidable thereon, toggle-levers connecting the collar with the post, a hand lever pivoted to the collar, a link connectin the lever with the base, and a pawl adapted by engagement with a retaining member to hold the lever in depressed position.
4. In a jack, a tubular standard, a base therefor, a post slidable in the standard, a collar slidable thereon, toggle-levers connecting the collar with the post, a hand-lever pivoted to the collar, a link connecting the lever with the standard, and a pawl connecting with the lever and engageable with contiguous members of the toggle, the same being serrated for that purpose.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. STANLEY J. VESELY. Witnesses:
