MECHANICAL ROUNDABOUT.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr TYMKoW, a citizen of Poland, residing at Ardrossan, in' the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Roundabouts, of which the following is a specification.
I This invention relates to new and useful 1 improvements in mechanical toys of the roundabout type.
An important object of the invention is to provide a mechanical toy which is intended to furnish amusement and entertain- 1 ment to persons watching the operation of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of mechanical toy which somewhat resembles the opera- 20 tion of a ferris wheel, but possesses means for varying the movement of the various cars in respect to each other during their travel in an arcuate path.
Other objects and'advantages of the in- 2 vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate'like 30 parts throughout the same,

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of this invention, the numeral 5 designates aplate .or base constructed from any suitable material, such as metal or the like, and is formed integrally with a substantially rectangularly-shaped boX formation 6 which is positioned laterally of the said plate or base 5 and extends longitudinally of the same. base or plate 5 are a series of struts or legs 7 which are connected at their upper ends to form a pair of spaced split bearings 8 which are adapted for rotatably supporting a horizontal shaft 9 which is keyed to a hub 10 that carries radially extending circular spokes 11 having connected to their outer ends a circular band 12.
Slidably mounted within the rectangularly-shaped boX-like structure 6 is a block or base 13 which is partially supported upon the floor 6 of the said box-like structure 6'an'd is provided with a longitudinally extending internally threaded bore 14 which is adapted for operatively engaging the ro tatable feed screw 15 which is journaled in the opposite ends 16 of the said box-like structure 6 and is provided with spaced collar elements 17 that are adapted for preventing longitudinal movement of the said feed screw in respect to the box-like structure 6. Formed integrally with the block or base 13 are a series of struts or legs 18 that converge upwardly for the purpose of forming a split bearing member 19 at their upper ends which is adapted for rotatably carrying the horizontal stub shaft 20. Suitably keyed to or rotatably mounted on this horizontal stub shaft 20 is a hub 21 that is provided with a series of rectangularly-shaped recesses or pockets 22 formed in its peripheral face for the purpose of receiving the reversely bent spokes 23 pivotally secured thereto by means of the fulcrum pins 24;, as best shown in Fig. 4. The outer ends of these spokes 24 are each provided with an aperture that receives a small pin or shaft 25 rotatably therein which is formed integrally with a tubular block member 26 that slidably encircles one of the said radial spokes 11, as best shown in Fig. 1. Di-
rectly opposite this pin or shaft 25 is a second pin or shaft 27 that is formed in tegrally with the tubular block 26 and is adapted for rotatably connectinga chair or car 28 to the said block 26. There are further provided washers or spacing collars 29 that encircle the said pins or shafts 25 and 27 and are positioned between the outer ends of the spoke 23 and the block 26 and between the said block and the car or chair 28 for the purpose of better enabling relative movement to occur between the said spoke, block, and chair.

The provision of the adjustable block or 7 base 13 is for the purpose of shifting the horizontal stub axle 2O laterally in either direction from the horizontal shaft 9 and its range of movement is from substantially the position shown in Fig. 1 to a similar position at the left of the said horizontal shaft 9.
Considering first that the horizontal stub shaft 20 is directly in axial alinement with the horizontal shaft 9. It will be seen that by delivering power to the pulley 30, the horizontal shaft 9 will be caused to rotate and will thereby rotate the radial spokes l1 and band 12. Due to the fact that the tubular blocks 26 with their pivotally supported chairs or cars 28 are directly connected to the radial spokes 11, the rotation of these spokes will cause the blocks 26 and cars or chairs 28 to travel in an arcuate path around the stub shaft 20. During this rotation of the various elements, the cars or chairs 28 will be retained at all times at equal distances apart. When it is desired to somewhat vary the movement of the cars or chairs 28 in respect-to the radial spokes 11 and band 12, the feeding screw 16 is lo tated in either direction for causing the block or base 13 to travel along the same thereby shifting the horizontal stub shaft 20 laterally in either direction from the said horizontal shaft 9. It will now be apparent that during the rotation of the shaft 9 with its rigidly connected spokes 11 and band 12, theblocks 26 will be caused to reciprocate upon the said spokes 11 as well as to travel in an arcuate path in respect to the stub shaft 20. Similar movement will naturally be transmitted to the chairs or cars 28 and will therefore furnish an amusing and entertaining sight for persons watching the operation of the same. It will be seen by inspecting Fig. 1 of the drawing, that with the stub shaft 20 positioned to the right of the said horizontal shaft 9 that the cars or.
chairs 28 will be positioned a greater distance anart when thev are travelin in an arcuate path to the right of the said shaft 9 than the chairs or cars 28 while traveling in an arcuate shaft 9.
It is to be understood that I do not desire path to the left of the said to limit myself tov employing this construction as a toy for it may as suitably be employed in an amusement park as a mechanical roundabout for carrying human beings. It is to be understood that the form of this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape,,size, and. arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims. 7 Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. In a device of the class described, a
base, a shaft rotatably supported above said base, a spoked wheel keyed to said shaft; a-
second base, a stub shaft rotatably support ed thereabove, a hub mounted on the stub 5 shaft, radial spokes secured to said hub, blocks ,pivotally connected to said spokes encircling the spokes of said wheel, a car rotatably connected to each block, and means for connecting the first mentioned rotatable shaft with a source ofpower for driving the same to cause said cars to travel stub shaft, radial spokes pivotally connected tosaid hub, a block rotatably connected to each radial spoke encircling one ofthe spokes of said wheel, a car rotatably connected. to each block, and means for connectmg the first mentioned rotatable shaft With a source of power for driving the same tocause said cars to travel in an arcuate path.

In a; device of-the class described, a base, a shaft rotatably supported above said base, a spoked wheel keyed to said shaft; a second base, a stub shaft rotatably supported therealoove, a hub mounted on said stub shaft, radial spokes pivotally connected to said hub, a block rotatably connected to each spokeslidably'engaging one of the spokes of said wheel, acar rotatably connected to each block, means for connecting the first mentioned rotatableshaft with a source of power for driving saidwheel to cause saidcars'to travel in an arcuate path, and means for moving the second mentioned base in respect to the first for causing the blocks to reciprocate-upon the spokes-of said wheel during the rotation of the latter.:,
