ALVIS, "WHAT PORTABLE BOOTH 0B TENT.
Application filed December To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,,ANNA SEVERIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weatherford. in the county of Parker and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Booths or Tents, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a portable booth or tent wherein a collapsible frame structure formed of hingedly connected rods is adapted to he set up for supportin a canopy or covering of canvas or like material.
With the objects that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is bet ter understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts tlu'oughout-the several views.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the frame structure with the canopy enclosing the same.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of one of the upper frame bars in collapsed and folded position,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of adjacent ends of a pair of the upper frame bars showing the hinged sections thereof with the bars partially broken away.
Figure {l is a longitudinal detail sectional view showing the adjustable hinge connection between adjacent ends of the rods sec-- tions of the upper frame,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the adjacent ends of two hingedly connected rods showing the hinge mounting partially rotated and in a reverse position with respect to the showing in Fig. 4,
Figure 6 is a cross sectional view taken on line VIVI of Fig. 5, and enlarged, and
Figure 7 shows perspective views of the adjacent hinged ends of two rod sections The frame structure for supporting the canvas covering of the booth or tent includes an upper frame formed of bin godly connect ed rod sections with vertical supporting posts therefor, the rod sections being preferably arranged in rectangular formation in plan view with each side of the frame formed of a plurality of tubular rods 1 hingedly connected at. adjacent ends by adjustable devices to perunit the hingedly connected rods to swing in 31, 1923. Serial No. 683,766.
chosen directions. The adjacent: ends of the tubular rods 1 receive a bearing stud 2 carried by a block 3, the bearing studs Q'being swivoled in the ends. of the tubular rods by the provision of annular grooves 4 in the bearing studs into which pins 5 carried by screw studs 6 are received, the screw studs 6 being threaded through the sidewalls of the tubular rod as shown in Figs. a and 6; To hold the bearing studs 2 and blocks 3 carrying the same rigidly supported within the ends of the tubular rods, there is provided a coil spring 7 in each tubular rod engaging a cross pin 8 at its outer end with the inner end thereof engaging the adjacent end of the bearing stud 2* as shown in Fig. a. The. outer end of one. of the blocks 3 is bifurcated to provide a pair of side lugs 9 apertured as at 10 and between which lugs, the single centrally positioned lug 11 apertured as at 12 and carried by the cooperating block 3 is received, the openings 10 and 12 registering when the lugs are engaged and being pivotally mounted upon the pin 13. The outer ends of the lugs 9 and 11 are cut on straight lines 1e that extend at right angles to the longitudinal arcs of the tubular rods 1 and abut fiat faces on the blocks 3 for holding the rod sections in alineinent as shown in Figs. 1 and 1.
The outer ends of the hingedly connected tubular rods at each side of the upper frame structure carry lug extensions 15 that are provided with openings 16 registering with each other as shown in Fig. 3 while a vertical stand or supporting post- 17 provided with a pin extension upon its upper end that is received in the registering opening 16 for supporting the upper frame structure at the upper ends thereof.
With the frame structure in a set-up position as illustrated in Fig. 1, the laterally projecting portions of the hinged lug extensions 9 and 11 are directed downwardly to prevent collapsing of the hingedly connected rods 1, and a canopy of canvas or similar material embodying an upper wall 18 and a depending side wall 19 encloses the frame structure, the side wall 19 being provided with windows 20 and an entrance door opening 21. In collapsing the booth or tent, the canvas covering is removed and the verticul post 17 disengaged from the upper frame structure. In order to permit swinging of the adjacent hinged tubular rods 1 in alternately opposite directions, the swivel ing pins 5 are slightly removed from the an nular grooves 4 in the desired bearing studs 2, which will permit rotation of the blocks 3 from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that illustrated in Fig. 5 so that the severally hinged tubular rods 1 may be folded upon each other'to occupy a minimum of space as illustrated in Fig. 2.
WVhile there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
lVhat is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the class described, an upper horizontal frame formed of side bars, each embodying a plurality of hinged rod sections, vertical supporting posts for the upper frame, and a canopy inclosing the frame, and posts, the hinge connections between the rod sections including bearing studs rotatable in the adjacent ends of the rods to permit the rod sections to be swung in opposite directions.
2. Ina device of the class described, an
upper horizontal frame formed of side bars,
each embodying a plurality of hinged rod sections, vertical supporting posts for the upper frame, a canopy inclosing the frame and posts, the hinge connections between the rod sections including bearing studs rotatable in the adjacent ends of the rods to permit the rod sections to be swung in opposite directions, the rotatable mounting formed of an adjustable swivel connection, and springs associated with the rod sections and bearing studs cooperating with the adustable swivel connections for holding the rod sections in shifted positions.
3. In a device of the class described, an upper horizontal frame formed of side bars, each embodying a plurality of hinged rod sections, vertical supporting posts for the upper frame and a canopy inclosing the frame and posts, the hinge connection between the rod sections including blocks having bearing studs swivelled in the rods, lugs carried by the blocks for pivotal connection and constructed in a manner to cause alinement of the rod sections when moved to their limits in one direction.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
ANNA SEVERIN.
