Be it known that I, ANTONIO GALLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peekskill, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lockable Gras Cocks, of which the following is a specification. i i
This invention relates to gas cocks, and has reference to means for locking the cock to prevent, not so much its being tampered with, but to secure the cock against accidental opening. The means are attained as set forth in this specification and the accompanying drawings, in which like letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
Fig. l is a side elevation of a simple gas cock as used for flexible tube connection having my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan of the gas cock shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a portion of the plug of the gas cock partly in longitudinal section to show the locking devices. Fig. t is a representation the same as in 3 showing the devices in unlocked position. Figs. 5 and 6 are details of the push and locking bolts. Fig. 7 shows the application of the device to a lever gas cock. Figs. 8, A, 5 and 6 are upon an enlarged scale, and Figs. 1 2 and 7 are natural sizes.
Figs. 3 and lclearly show the manner of applying the devices. A hole is made horizontally through, preferably, the upper part of the cock plug Z9, one end of the hole being of a lesser diameter than the remain ing length of the hole. A plug u is secured in the larger end of the hole forming a chamber 1. A slotted bolt a, Figs. 3 4L 5 and 6 is fitted to slide easily in the chamber, and is provided with a reduced end portion m that reaches through the small end of the hole, as in Figs. l 3 and et. A spring s in the chamber pushes the bolt n forward as in Fig. 3.
Intersecting with the chamber r a vertical chamber r is bored, and is fitted with a push-plug c'. This plug passes through a slot in the bolt 1t, as in Figs. 3 l 5 and 6. It is provided with a head e, the form of which is not material except to be adapted to its position and to be easy of access. A spring s pushes the plug outwardly.

that is towards the spring, beveled as at a', Figs. 3 l and 6. A notch is cut in the push-plug at 0, Figs. 3 and 4, which has its upper side beveled to engage with the beveled face of the bolt. The parts are in normal position as in Fig. 3, the push-plug and bolt interlocking by means of the beveled V faces and the pressure of the springs, and the part m of the bolt extends beyond the surface of the plug Pressure onv the head c depresses the push-plug and forces inwardly 'he part m of the bolt, as in Fig. 4f.. Then the pressure on the head e is released the springs s s restore the parts to their normal places. The point m becomes the locking bolt when the plug o is in place as in Fig. l. The usual plug-stop is shown at fu and the bolt ml at right angles thereto. A recess to receive the bolt is cut in the {ia-nge m of the cock as indicated in Figs. l and 2.
lt will be observed in Fig. l that when the head c is depressed to its limit, the beveled faces of the bolt and push-plug do not disengage. lf they did, it would be possible, in case the spring s acted more slowly than the spring s, for the spring s to shoot the push-plug entirely out of its chamber. As the construction docs not admit of their disengagement when the springs are in place that cannot happen.
The plug a in the end of the chamber r may be driven in as in Fig. 3, or it may be screwed in as in Fig. A.
"While the details of this invention are described in connection with the thumb-handle cocks, it is obvious that it is applicable to any form of plug-cocks, as indicated in Fig. 7.
Having described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lockable gas cock the combination with the plug of the cock of a horizontal chamber in the plug separate from the gas passage through the plug, an inner portion of the chamber larger than the outlet from the chamber, a bolt within the chamber fitting the larger and the smaller diameters of the chamber', the bolt having a lateral movement within the chamber the smaller outer end of the bolt extending beyond the chamber, a recess in the gas-cock body adapted to receive the small outer end of the bolt,
