STEAM-HEATED PRESS FOR VSli-IAPIII'G? WIPER CLOTHS.v
Application filed April 23, 1923. Serial No. 664,201.
T 0 all whom it may cof/wem Be it known that I, GEORGE E. VILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Heated Presses for Shaping Wiper' Cloths; and I do hereby declare the following to be j a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a shaping de-v vice in the form of a press, and while the invention is applicable to other uses, the
same has preferably been designed to shape a novel form of wiper cloth. j Such a cloth is used in forming and shaping wiped joints on lead pipe and are given a permanent shape by being placed under pressure while heat is simultaneously applied thereto.
It is an object of this invention to provide a device ofrsimple and eficient form having hollow forms with co-operating curved or semi-cylindrical surfaces, between which the article is pressed, said forms being adapted to have a heating medium supplied thereto.
It is a further object of the invention to provide such a device having a lower hollow form with base forming means thereon, which means carry upstanding guides between which an upper form is guided and operating means for said latter forni being provided in the shape of a screw journaled in the lower form and engaging the upper form as a nut.
These and otherk objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to the same part-s throughout the different views, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of the device;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 17 as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, the device comprises a lower form 1 illustrated as of semi-cylindrical shape and as having an upper convex curved or semi-cylindrical surface. The form 1 is hollow and a pipe 2 extends into one end thereofwhich is adapt- `ed to supply steam from any suitable source,
venient base. .The members 4 have .guide members 6 extending upwardly therefrom which are shown as in the form of T-shaped Vribs, from the cross web of which projects inwardly a rectangular rib j 7. .Another form 8 is' provided having slots at its ends fitting over vthe ribs 7,501 as to be guided thereby in its vertical movement. The form 8 has a concave surface 9. on its underside adapted to lit over the upper surface of form land is shown` as havingvcurved parallel semi-annular walls and constituting a hollow member. Pipe 10, which will be connected with some suitable source of steam supply, extends into the form 8 at one end and another pipe 11 which will form an exhaust or drain pipe extends into the form at its other end at the opposite side thereof.
The form-1 has a central hub portion provided with a shouldered aperture in which is journaled the lower end of a screw member 12, said screw having a collar at its lower end fitting in the shouldered part of the aperture in the member 1. A `plate 13, preferably, is secured to the bottom'of the form 1 beneath the screw 12. The screw 12 extends upwardly and'engages in a threaded hub 14 formed in the form 8, which hub acts as a nut. The screw is provided at its upper end with an operating hand wheel 15 by which it is turned relatively to move the forms 1 and 8.
In operation, the wiper cloths are placed on the form 1 with the centerline of the cloth in alinement with the longitudinal, center line Yof the form. The forms will be when the cloths are in position, as stated, the hand wheel 15 will be turned and the fo-rm 8 moved down intoV contact with the cloths which will then be pressed between the forms and given a curved shape similar thereto. The cloths are left in the press for supplied with steam so as to be heated vand a suitable time and are then removed. After being` so treated they retain their curved shape.
From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided a simple and convenient means for shaping the wiper cloths. Quite a large number of the cloths can be placed in the device at one time so that the work will be rapidly performed.
It will, of course, be understood, that various rchanges may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above enumerated and such as shown and described and set forth in the appended claims.
r1What is claimed is:
l. A device for shaping wiper cloths comprising an elongated form substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section and having a conveX upper surface and a fiat base memn ber at each end thereof adapted to be attached to a support, standards rising vertically from said base members having vertical ribs projecting therefrom, said form having a hub at its central portion provided with a central bore having an enlarged lower portion, a screw journaled in said bore having a head seated in said enlarged portion thereof, a plate secured to the bottom of said hub holding said screw in place, said screw having a hand wheel at its top, an elongated form disposed above said form ln ving a concave lower surface adapted tolit over said lirst mentioned form and having lugs at each end embracing and slidable on said ribs, said last mentioned form having a central hub forming a nut in which said sorew travels, and means for supp1ying steam to said form.
2. A device for shaping wiper cloths and other articles comprising an elongated hollow form having a concave semi-cylindrical upper surface thereon, means for supplying steam to the inside of said form, base inembers secured to the ends of said form, upright guide members having vertical slots therein secured to said base members, an elongated hollow form having a concave lower surface adapted to fit over the said surface on the first mentioned form, and having guide means at each end thereof, movable in said slots, means for supplying steam 'to said last mentioned form, a screw rotatably secured in said first mentioned form and engaging said last mentioned form as a nut, said screw being disposed centrally of said forms and having means thereon for vturning the same to move said forms together to shape the wiper cloth between the said surfaces thereof.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature.
