DEVICE FOR FINISHING THE ENDS OF DRAIN-TILES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 4, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ELMER GoLD- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Dodge, Webster county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Finishing the Ends of Drain-Tiles and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in devices for finishing the ends of drain tiles and the like; and the objects and nature of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings illustrating what I now consider to be my preferred embodiment from'among other formations and arrangements within the spirit and scope of my invention.
An object of the invention is to provide simple and eflicient means for preparing green tiles or the like for drying and burning by dressing or finishing the rough end edges thereof left or formed by the wires or other cutting devices of the cutting off machine which severs the continuous bar or hollow tube delivered from the forming machine into suitable lengths for drying and burning to form completed tiles.
Another object of the invention is to provide certain improvements in details of construction and arrangements and combinations of parts whereby a highly efficient and easily operated apparatus will be produced for dressing, finishing, or shaping the ends of green tiles, or the like, preparatory to the drying and burning thereof.
The invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in combinations of parts and elements as more fully and particularly explained and pointed out hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings ;Figure 1, is a perspective view of my machine showing portions of an off-bearing belt from a cutting ofi device and a tile thereon approaching the machine of my invention. F ig. 2, is an elevation of my machine, the conveyer belt being shown in section, and a tile in elevation.

I from which a which usually receives the green tiles from a cutting off table or other suitable cutter. The green cut tiles a, are carried forward by the top ply of said conveyer with the tiles resting transversely thereon and usually projecting laterally beyond the longitudinal edges of the conveyer.
The tile-end finishing or dressing device is arranged intermediate the length of the top ply of the conveyer so that the tiles carried thereby from the cutter will be presented to such device and after the ends of the tiles have been pressed and shaped, the conveyer will bear off the finished green tiles for drying preparatory to burning. This device comprises a suitable vertically disposed frame arranged transversely of the conveyer and consisting of a suitable base 2,
pair of fixed standards or uprights 20, rise. A rotary guide and supporting pulley or roller 21 is arranged transversely between and carried by the lower portions of the standards 20, touphold the lower ply of the conveyer, which ply passes between said standards and rests on and travels over said roller. the standards are connected by and secured to a horizontal cross bar or tracker board 22, arranged transversely of and beneath the top ply of the conveyer to support the same and a tile thereon in a predetermined horizontal plane, or at a certain height, when traversing said bar 22. A pair of opposing formers or pressing, shaping or finishing dies 3, is provided to engage the ends of the tile when located immediately over and parallel with said bar 22, and press the opposite end edges of said tile into proper shape and form and remove the roughness and unevenness thereof produced by the cutting operation. Means are provided for simultaneously moving these dies in opposite directions to close the dies inwardly against the opposite ends of the tile with a uniform -or approximately uniform pressure so that the tile will be held between the two dies in a measure as though gripped between two jaws pressed toward each other. In the specific example illustrated, thedies are carried by the upper ends of upright levers 30, at their lower ends independently fulcrumed at 31, to the standards 20 to permit their upper ends to swing in the vertical plane of the longitudinal axis of the tile gripped between the dies. A vertically swingable horizontal hand lever 4, is ful- The upper ends of l crumed to one of said standards and extends therefrom past the other standard and projects beyond the same to form handle 40. The two upright die carrying levers are connected to and actuated by the operating lever 4, through the medium of flexible pull connections 5, secured about to the central portions of the levers 30, respectively, and extending inwardly over pulleys 50, mounted in the standards and from thence extending inwardly and downwardly and secured to the operating lever at a. common point usually midway between the two standards.
It is obvious that when the operating lever is swung down, the two die carrying levers will be simultaneously swung inwardly toward each otherto grip the tile between'the dies wit-h the application of the desired pressure. lVhen the operating lever is released the upright levers swing outwardly and move the dies from the tile ends, thereby releasing the tile so that the conveyer can 'carry the same forward from the finishing device. When the next succeeding tile on the conveyer, reaches the bar 22, the operating lever is again clepressed to engage the dies with the tile ends to perform the smoothing'or finishing operation.
The two dies are similar and are 'arranged vertically and in opposition. I show each' die formed with a central circular rounded boss or protuberance 32, to enter the bore of the tile and center the tile on the die while the face of the die is formed with an'annular groove or depression 33, around the base of the boss and rounded in cross section to receive and properly smooth off or shape the end edge of the tile and the annular corners of said edge. The dies in acting on a tile, hold the tile in engagement with'the belt surface, so that the friction of the'traveling belt on the tile is suflicient to rotate the tile'on the dies, whereby the tile ends are finished and smoothed by the pressure of the diesand by the rotary action of the tile on or against the dies. If so desired, springs 6, or any other suitable means or arrangement can be provided to cause the dies to swing from the tile ends when pressure onlever 4c, is released.
Although I have specifically described the frame construction of the particular example illustrated, yet I do not wish to limit my invention to anyparticular frame or' supporting means for the dies or formers and their operating means, nor do I wish to limit all features of my invention to the particular dieor former operating means shown, and as it is obvious that various variations and modifications might be resorted to, I do not wish to limit my invention to the particular disclosure hereof.
What I claim is 1'. A machine for I dressing the ends of green cut drain tiles, and the like, comprising a pair of opposing tile end finishing dies, for centering and grasping a die therebetween, a tile conveyer for carrying tiles to and from said tile grasping dies and operating mechanism for simultaneously moving said dies toward each other to grip the ends of a tile and press the same between the dies.
2. A machine for dressing the ends of green cut drain tiles, and the like, comprising a pair of opposing tile pressing and finishing diesformed to engage and finish the tile end edges, said dies formed with portions to engage the tile ends and center the tiles on the dies, and die operating means for simultaneously moving the dies oppositely and applying tile holding and finishing pressure thereto.
3. A machine for dressing the ends of green cut drain tiles, and the like, comprising opposing non-rotary finishing dies having grooves to receive and finish the tile end edgesand central protuberances to cen- 'ter the tiles on the dies, and die operating means for simultaneously moving said dies oppositely to grip and release each tile and to apply tile holding and finishing pressure thereto.
4. A pair of tile-end finishingopposing pressure dies formed to grip and press a tile therebetween, said dies having cup-like faces to receive and press the end edges of hollow tiles and center the same therein, in combination with manually actuated operating means for simultaneously and oppositely moving said dies'and applying tile grip ping pressure thereto, and a tile conveyer for carrying tiles to and from said dies, said conveyer traveling below said dies, whereby the dies can grip a tile resting A transversely on the conveyer.
5. A conveyer'belt adapted to carry hollow green tiles arranged transversely thereof, in combination with a frame traversed by said belt, a pair of opposing tile-end finishing dies arranged at the opposite edges of said belt and above the plane thereof to .engage and finish the opposite ends of a tile thereon, and operating and supportlng means for said dies and CfiIIlQCl' by sa1d frame.

A conveyer for carrying hollow tiles arranged transversely thereon, in combinaiis tion With a frame having a transverse bar arranged under and traversed by said conveyer, levers independently fulcrumed to swing transversely of the path of movement of said conveyer and respectively provided at their free ends with opposing tile end finishing dies arranged above the horizonal plane of said conveyer and at opposite ends of said bar, an operating hand lever, and operating connections therefrom to said upright levers to simultaneously swing the same inwardly to engage said dies with the opposite ends of a tile carried by said conveyer and arranged over said bar.
8. A traveling belt conveyer, in combination with means for finishing the ends of tiles and the like, carried by said conveyer comprising a pair of tile-end-finishing dies arranged to receive the tile ends and hold the tile while rotated by engagement with said belt, and die controlling means.
9. A traveling belt, in combination with tile end finishing means comprising dies adapted to receive the tile ends and hold the tile while rotated on said dies by said belt.
