Be it known that I', Louis P. Vmotm'r, a, citizen of` the United States, and a resident. of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism for Phonographs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. y
The present invention relates to motoroperated driving mechanism for talking machines and its primary object is te pro' vide improved driving mechanism by which the talking machine record will be driven at a uniform speed despitevariations in the speed of the motor, resultin from uctuations in the current sup li to the motor. The invention consists 11i the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

In the exemplification of the invention illustrated, the driving mechanism is all mounted on and supported by a frame or bed-plate 9. The record turn-table 10 is mounted on and rotated by a vertical shaft llwhich is driven by power derived from an electric motor 12 which is suitably secured to the underside ofl frame 9. The armature shaft 13 of motor 12 carries a ily-wheel 14 and drives a shaft 15 through a flexible coupling 16 of well-known construction. Shaft 15 is su ported in bearings 18 of a housing 17 whic depends from and is fixed to the underside of frame 9. An adjustable screw 19 forms a thrust bearin for the vertical shaft 11. A worm 20, cut 1n shaft 15, meshes with a worm-wheel 21 which is loose on shaft 11 and forms one member of a slip joint through which shaft 11 is driven. Gear 21 is mounted between and engages with two fibre ` frietion disks 22 and 23 which are also loose on shaft 11. A A metal disk 24 engages fibre disk 22 and a'disk 25 integral with shaft 11.

A pin 26, rigid with shaft 11, haslitsends projecting into notches 1n disk 24 to rotate the disk with the shaft. and permits slight relative axial movement. between the disk and theshaft. A plate 27 is provided with spring-fingers 28, which bearupon disk 24 to maintain the required friction or pressurebetween the members of the slip joint. A nut 29 threaded to shaft 11 may be adjusted to regulate the pressure of fingers 28 against disk 24 to correspondingly regulate the friction between the members of the slip joint. A plate 30 is held in housing 17 by a screw 31 and forms the top of the chamber containing the slip joint so that alubr-ieant of suitable viscosity will be retained in said chamber. An oblique toothed gear 32 is fixed to shaft .l1 and meshes with fa worm 33 cut on a shaft 34 to operate a speed or vgovernor controlled braking device. Shaft 34 is supported in bearings 35 mounted in lugs 36 which depend from the frame 9.
y This governor comprises a disk 37 slidable onfshaft 34, a collar 38 fixed on said shaft, leaf-springs 39 connecting collars 38 and the hub of disk 37, and weights 40 attached to the springs. A friction pad 41, mounted on an arm 42, cooperates with said disk to con` trol its speed so that when the speed of shaft 34 becomes excessive, disk 37 will conta-ct with pad 41 to act as a drag on the shaft 11. Arm 42 is pivoted, as at`43, to frame 9 and at its opposite end is provided with a slot 44 into which projects a pin 45 dependingfrom' a shaft 46 which extends through and is journalled in frame 9 and toathe upper end of which is secured an adjusting handlel t 47. In practice, it has been produce smooth-running driving mechanism found that res istances in the circuit are insuilicient -to and that brakes alone are not efiicient for 7 ,that purpose, and that by combining the resistance control for the voltage of the circuit and a brake for the elements driven through a slip-connection great uniformity in speed of the turn-table can be attained.

In driving mechanism for talking machines, the combination of an electric motor, a record turn-table, a shaft for said table, a slip-connection connected. to drive said shaft, gearing between the motor and the slip-connection, an electric circuit for said motor, a` resistance-coil connectedv to said circuit, a speedcontrolled switch operated by the motor for cutting the resistance into and out of the circuit anda brake for retarding the turn-table driven by the driven element of the slip-connection and appliedy between said connection and the turn-table.

In driving mechanism for talking machines, the combination of an electric motor, a recordturn-table, a shaft for said table, a slip-connection connected to drive said shaft, gearing between the motor and the slip-connection, an electric circuit for said motor, a resistance-coil connected to said circuit, a speed-controlled switch for cutting the resistance into and out of the circuit, a brake for retarding the turn-table throu hv the slip-connection and a speed- Acontro led governor driven through the slipconnection for operating the brake.

In driving mechanism for talking machines, the combination of an electric motor, a record turn-table, a shaft for said table, a slip-connection connected to drive said shaft, gearing between the motor and the slip-connection, an electric circuit for said motor, a resistance-coil connected to said circuit, a speed-controlled Vgovernor driven by the motor, a switch operated by the governor for cutting the resistance into and out of the circuit, a brake for retarding the turntable through the slip-connection and a speed-controlled governor driven through the slip-connection foroperating the brake.

In driving mechanism Ifor talking machines, the combination of an electric motor, a record turn-table, a sliplconnection connected to drive said turn-table, gearing between the motor and the slip-connection, an electric circuitfor said motor, a plurality of resistance coils, one of which is constantly in said circuit, a switch for cutting the other resistance-into and out of the circuit, a speed-controlled governor for operating said switch, and aspeed-controlled brake retarding the speed of the shaft.
