TWEEZERS.
Application filed July 9, 1923. Serial No.y 650,443.
T 0 all vwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARRY Scritonssnii, a citizen of the United States, residing at F airland, in the county orf Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tweezers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools and more particularly to tweezers.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a tool, in the form of tweezers, which is so constructed as to enable an automobile mechanic to readily insert the valve spring retaining pins of automobile engines, in the usual holes of the valve stems, with little effort `and in the minimum length of time without pinching his fingers. f 7
Another objectof this invention resides in the provision of a tool, in the form of tweezers, adapted to be manipulated to grasp a valve spring retaining pin, prior to inserting it in the usual hole in the valve stem and release it after insertion within the hole.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a tool, in the'form of tweezers, consisting of pin grasping jaws adapted to be controlled by manually operable means coacting therewith.
With these and other objects in view, this invention involves certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of elements to be hereinafter more fully set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appending claims, and, while the present disclosure of this invention embodies an assemblage of cooperative elements capable of performing the functio-ns desired, it is to be understood that the right is reserved to resort to such changes as fall within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a tool constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view therethrough with the jaws in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the jaws in open position.
Fig. f1 is a cross sectional view on line 4 4: 'of Fig. 2.
In the present embodiment of this inven- 1 tion, the numeral 5 designates a tool, in the form of tweezers, for inserting the pins in the holes of engine valve stems, and consists of a tubular handle 6 having its outer end split as at 7, tapered and deflected as at 8 to provide yieldable pin gripping jaws 9.
Slidably extending into the handle 6 is a plunger' 10 which is provided with an elongated slot 11 registering with aligned apertures 12 in the handle 4 for the reception of a pin or rivet 13 to ret-ain the plunger in the handle and limit the stroke thereof.
Surrounding the plunger is an expansible coil spring 14k which is disposedbetween the pin or rivet 18 and the base of a knob 14', formed on the outer end of the plunger, to retract the plunger when released by the thumb or finger of the mechanic.
Although this disclosure is primarily intended to introduce a tool for grasping the common valve spring pins of automobile engines so they can readily be inserted in the holes of the valve stems, the jaws thereof may be spread or spaced for further spreading by a similarly operated plunger to grip valve spring washers, and, since suchy departure from the present disclosure requires but a slight change in the degree of space between the jaws, the elements thus involved will function ina like manner.
In the utilization of this tool to insert a valve spring pin in the hole of the valve stem of an automobile engine, the plunger 10 is depressed against the tension of the coil spring 14.- until its lower end spreads the jaws 9 of the handle 6, whereupon the selected pin is positioned in the slot existing between the jaws and, upon releasing the finger pressure from the plunger, it will assume its normal or retracted position, leaving the pin firmly disposed between the jaws. With the pin thus disposed between the jaws, the. mechanic can readily insert it into the desired hole of the valve stem and depress the plunger to release the grip thereon.
WT ith this invention fully set fort-h, it is manifest that a tool of great utility is produced,`and, since its embodiment of elements require the minimum amount of Work to manufacture and assemble, it can be marketed at a reasonable price.
Having thus described this invention, what 5 I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: y
A tool of the character set Jforth, the conibination of a tubular handle having a slit deflected outer end7 a plunger extending Within the handle and terminating adjacent the slit end thereof, a knob on the outer end of the plunger, an expansible coil spring between the handle and plunger, and means retaining the plunger in the handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HARRY SCHLOESSER.
