i IDENTIFICATION. DEVICE.
Specification of Lettersatent. i
Patented Apr. 27,1920.'
Application led May 15, 1919. Serial No. 297,319.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KALKBRENNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Identification Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to identification devices, and has particular reference to an improved device of this character capable of being employed in connection with a bunch of keys, so that in the event of the latter being lost or mislaid the finder may readily identify the owner of the keys so that proper restoration can be made.
Another object of the invention resides in an improved structure capable 0f being connected with a key ring and so constructed as to receive an identification card, said device providing a pocket in which the card is adapted to be inserted and the walls of said pocket being apertured at their ends for the reception of the key ring, whereby when the key ring is in place the removal of the card from said pocket will be prevented.
lith these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention accordingly consists in the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts hereinafter to be fully described and having the scope thereof defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which similar characters of reference denote like and corresponding parts:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device and illustrating the same attached to a key holding ring,
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view, and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the identification card employed in connection with the device. n
Fig. Ll is a detailed sectional view of a slightly modified form `of the invention.
The identification device 1 comprising the preferred form of the invention, consists of a blank of sheet metal, which is formed to provide a tool extremity 2 and a combined pocket and handle extremity 3. T o form the extremity 3 the blank is bent upon itself so that its edges will terminate contiguously as at 4l, whereby spaced side walls 5 are provided, a pocket 6 being formed between said side walls. The extremity 2 of the device is in this instance in the form of a cap remover for bottles and by the addition of this tool the utility of the device l is materially broadened, however, it will be appreciated that the form of the eX- tremity 2 may be widely varied so that other forms of instruments may be provided instead of the form shown or, in the final analysis, the presence of the extremity 2 may be eliminated. The end of the handle 3, adjacent to the extremity 2, is closed when the opposite end is left open, as at 7, t0 permit of the insertion of an identification card 8 into the pocket 6, after which operation said end 7 may be closed if desired. To retain the card 8 in position within the pocket 6 and to prevent its accidental removal therefrom registering openings 9 are formed in the extremity 3 at points contiguous to the open end 7 thereof, and these openings 9-are adapted to receive a key ring 10, or an equivalent structure.
It will thus be manifest that when attached to the ring 10 the device 1 will form a part thereof, and by inserting the ring through the openings 9 the escape of the card 8 from the pocket 6 is effectively prevented. However, if the device is lost, the finder simply removes the device from its position upon the ring, thereby permitting the card 8 to be withdrawn from the device 1 so that its indicia, relative to its owner, may be readily viewed. Instructions are preferably stamped or printed upon the outer face of one of the side walls 5 of the device so that a finder will encounter no difliculty in determining the location of the card 8 and its manner of removal. An auxiliary opening l1 is formed in one or both of the walls 5 to permit of the insertion of a sharp pointed tool, which latter may be employed in facilitating the removal of the card 8 from its position within said pocket. The opening 11 is preferably of square formation and it usefully serves in the capacity of a socket wrench.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided a simple and useful device for the purposes above set forth, and one which will be cheap to manufacture and capable of extensive use as an advertising novelty. rial from which the openings 9 are formed may be bent over to provide a prong 12, which is capable of obstructing the open end of a pocket 6 to prevent removal of the If desired, the matecard 8 in substantially the manner as is peroard into the pocket, and the Walls of said 10 formed b the ring 10. body contiguous to the open end lof the What lyclaim is: latter being .apertured for the reception of An identifying attachment for key rings a key ring, whereby When the attachment 5 eomprisinga substantially inclosed body havis carried by the key ring, Vthe open end of ing a pocket formed therein, an identifying said pocket Will be closed by Said ring to 15 card capable of being positioned Within said effect the retention of said card therein. pocket, said body being open at one end tol In testimony whereof I affix In si nature. permit of the longitudinal insertion of said Y GEORGE KALKBR N ER.
