11 HT r ADJUSTABLE WINDOW-SHADE SUPPORT.
Application filed July 25, 1923. Serial No. 653,645.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that BEVILL 1V. WrirTwoRTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable l/Vindow-Shade Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to adjustable window shade supports, and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising vertically disposed guide casings at opposite sides of the window frame having shade supporting blocks therein, and to provide pulley and cable means, actuated from adjacent the lower end of one of said guides whereby the shade supporting blocks may be simultaneously raised or lowered for ad-v justing the position of the shade in a vertical plane.
A further object is to provide the upper end of one of said guides with a doublepulley, and the double pulley guide with a double crank actuated pulley at its lower end, to which cables are connected. The cables extend upwardly through the shade supporting block and over the double pulley at its upper end, and one of said cables eX- tends downwardly into said guide and is connected to the shade supporting block. The other cable extends across the frame and over a single pulley within the upper end of the other block guide and thence downwardly and connected to the shade supporting block in said last named guide.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window frame, showing the device applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the left hand shade supporting block.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the right hand shade supporting block.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the upper pulley carrying members.
Figure 5 is a perspective View of one of the lower pulley carrying members.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of one of the pulley carrying members showing a single pulley therein.
Figure 7 is a front elevation partly in section of the left hand guide.
Figure 8 is a side elevation of the double pulley member. Figure 9 is a front'elevation partly i section of the right hand guide and its mechanism.
Figure 10 is a side elevation of the right angle guide. 5
Figure ll is a perspective view of the ratchet pawl.
Figure 12 is a horizontal sectional view through the right hand guide taken on line 12-12 of Figure t Figure 13 is a horizontal sectional View taken on line 13-13 of Figure 7 Figure 14 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 1 1 1 1 of Figure 7.
Referring tothe drawings, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of window frame and 2 a shade roller having a shade 3. The roller 2 is adapted to be adjusted to various elevations in a'vertical plane, thereby allowing the shade 8 to be manipulated for excluding light at any particular position in relation to the window 4,-and at the same time allowing entrance of light though the window where it is not objectionable. vTo accomplish the above result vertically disposed guide casings 5 are provided, which may be'secured at the side rails 6 of the window frame 1 in any suitable manner. The outer sides of the guide casings 5 are provided with vertically disposed slots 7, through which slots the shade supporting brackets 8 extend for supporting the shade roller 2 in the usual manner., The shade supporting brackets 8 have their inner ends provided with plates 9, which plates have dove-tailed connections 10 with the weight blocks 11 and 12. WVeight blocks 11 and 12 are vertically slid-able within the guide casings 5, and are adapted to be simultaneously moved upwardly or downwardly for supporting the shade roller 2 at various elevations. Disposed within the upper end of the left hand guide casing 5 is a pulley casing 18, which casing is provided with flanges 14, which overlie the side walls of the upper end of the casings 5, thereby preventing downward movement of the pulley casing 13, in which is rotatably mounted a single pulley 15. Connected at 16 to the weight member 11 is a cable 17, which cable extends upwardly over the pulley 15 through the side of the casing 5 and across the window frame, and thence over one of the double pulleys 18 in the pulley casing 19 at the upper end of the right hand guide casing 5. The cable 17, after passing over one of the pulleys 18 extends downwardly through the weight block aperture 20 and around the ratchet carrying pulley 21 and is secured thereto at 22, therefore it will be seen that when the ratchet pulley 21 is rotated by the crank 23, the cable 17 will be wound thereon, and consequently the weight block 11 will be raised for elevating the shade roller2 at one end. Connected to the ratchet pulley 24; as at 25 is a cable 26, which cable extends upwardly through the aperture 20, and thence over the other double pulley 13, and downwardly into the guide casing 5 and is connected at 27 to the weight block 12, there fore it will be seen upon rotation o'l the crank 23, both weight blocks 11 and 12 will be simultaneously raised or lowered, and consequently the shade roller 2 will be elevated or lowered to the desired position.
The ratchet pulleys 21 and 24; are carried by the casing 28 disposed in the lower end of the guide casing 5, and said casing is provided with flanges 29, which overlie the sides of the casing 5, and consequently maintain said casing 28 against upward displacement incident to strain on the cables 26 and 17. The upper double pulleys 18, which are disposed in the casing 17 are held against downward displacement incident to strain on the cables 17 and 26 by means of flanges 30, which overlie the upper ends of the sides of the right hand casing 5. To hold the weight blocks 11 and 12 in any de sired position the inner side of the right hand casing 5 is provided with a 'T-slot 31, in the vertical portion 32 of which a detent 33 is disposed, said detent being provided with oppositely disposed notches 34 for receiving the sides of the vertical portion 33 after the detent has been passed through the horizontally disposed portion 35 of said T-slot. Detent 33 cooperates with the ratchet teeth 36 carried by the ratchet pulleys 21 and 2 1, and hold said pulleys 21 and 2% against retrograde movement after the weight blocks 11. and 12 have been adjusted to the desired position, however when it is desired to lower the shade roller 2, it will only be necessary to press downwardly on the outer end 01. the detent and allow reverse rotation of the pulleys 21 and 2e, preferably under the control of the operator who grasps the tank 23.
From the above it will be seen that a supporting means is provided for shade rollers, whereby a shade roller may be easily and quickly adjusted to various positions in a vertical plane, and the device is simple in construction and positive in operation.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with an adjustable shade supporting device comprising vertically disposed casings, members within the casing for supporting a shade roller, pulley and cable means for simultaneously moving said shade supporting members, said pulleys being disposed within the ends of the easings, of means for supporting said pulleys, said means comprising casings disposed within the ends of the vertically disposed casings, said pulley carrying casings being provided with flanges overlying the ends of the vertically disposed casings.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ail-ix my signature.
BEVILL W. 'VVHITWVORTH.
