S. KUBIAK f REMOVABLE FUSE PLUG Filed Oct. 23 1922 ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 16, 1924.
PATENT-orifice.
SYLVESTER KUIBIAIK,` F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
REN'EWABLE FUSE PLUG.
Application filed October 23, 1922. Serial No. 596,363.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLvEs'rER KUBIAK, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented ya new and useful Improvement in Renewable Fuse Plugs, of which the following is a full, clear', and exact description.
' My invention relates to improvementsin renewable fuse plugs, and more particularly to that type of fuse plug in which the fusible elementy may not beintentionally rendered inoperative easily, and itV consists in the combinations, constructions, .and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the fusible element consists in a unitwhi'ch may be quickly and easily replaced in the plug. I f
A further object of myinvention 4is to provide a device ofthe character described in which means is provided for preventing the intentional introduction of a relatively heavy conductor in place of the fusible element to willfully render the fuse plug inoperative. In the ordinary renewable fuse plug, it is relatively easy to introduce a copper wire or a heavy lead wire in place of the strip or lighter wire already provided.
AA further object of'my invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the fusible elementv of the plug is disposed directly below a mica window and may be readily observedy even though the mica may be somewhat coated with the volatilized elements of 'the fused strip.
A further object of my invention'is to provide a device ofthe character described which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture, and thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention'will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming };Jart'o'f'thisv application, in .whichr `Figure liis a top plan vview of anembodi- `ment rofmyinvention, V v
Figure 2 is a sectional view 2-2 of Figure 1, y
Figure 3 is 1 a sectional view along the line 3-3 ofFigure 1, and f Figure 4 is a perspective view of therenewable fuse plug element.` i
In carrying out my invention, I make use of' a porcelain body member 1 having a bore 2 disposed longitudinally therethrough. The-'bore 2 is providedwith an enlarged portion 3 adjacent toits upper end. A rect-angularcavity 4 is provided in the top wall of theubody member 1 and the enlarged portionB of the bore '2 communicates therewith. A binding` screw 5 is disposed in the bore 2 with its head 6 extending eXteriorly thereof.y The screw 5 is provided with an enlarged threaded portion 7, which threaded portion is arranged to extend within the enlarged portion 3 ofthe bore. In assembling my device, I introducesoft metal, such as babbitt 8,'into the bore 3 and tamp-itslightly at the bottom of the bore so as to provide an effective collar by means with which the threaded portion 7 of the screw 5 may con- ,tact and thereby-accidental displacement of the screw 5 is prevented. A metal washer 9 is introduced intermediate the head 6 of the screw 5 inthe body member 1 so as to insure an effective electrical contact with the center electrodey of the ordinary type of lamp socket when the plug is introduced therein. l
vThe body member 1 is provided on one along the line 4side thereof and yadjacent one end of the rectangular cavity 4l with a longitudinal groove l0 extending the entire length of the body member 1 and communicating at its 4upper end with the cavity 4. A standard screw plug shell 11, which is formed so as to enter and engage with the ordinary type of standard light socket, -is .disposed concentric with the body member l and has sek.cured thereto by means of a screw 12 a binding plate 13. yThe bindingy plate 13 issecured to `the inner side of the shell v11 and occupies aportion of the groove 10. The purpose of having the groove lO'eXtend the entire length of the body member 1. is so that the shell may beplaced upon the body memberiafterthe binding plate 13V has been having a bore extending vertically therethrough eonilnunieating at its upper end with said cavity, a pair of fuse terminals, one of said terminals being disposed Within said bore but not exposed in said cavity, that portion of said fuse terminal Within said cavity being enlarged, said fuse terminal assoeiated with said bore also having an enlarged portion at its opposite end, whereby said terminal may rotate in said bore but 10 may not become dislodged from said bore, and a fusible element, one terminal of which is adapted to be connected to the outer por tion of said fuse terminal in said cavity, and the other terminal of which is connected 15 to the remaining terminal on said body member.
