Application filed July 9,
T 0 all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that DAVID S'roNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Devils Lake, in the county of Ramsey and State of North Dakota, and OLEN J. BooK, also a citizen of the United States, residing at Cando, in the county of Towner and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide an oil pump as a means of aording continuous lubrication to the gearing and more especially the master gear teeth of a tractor or like machine during the operation of the tractor and proportionate to the rate of movement thereof to maintain a uniform condition adapted to minimize wear while economizing in the consumption of the lubricating material; and with this object in view the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a tractor drive wheel having in connection therewith a lubricating device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same, partly broken away and showing the lubricating means in section.
Figure 3 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the reservoir, the side wall of one of the cylinders of the pump being broken away.
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken in a plane to the right of the left end wall of the reservoir as shown in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the reservoir and pump with the closure of the latter removed.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Figure 3f The lubricating lapparatus designed as above indicated, especially for use in connection with the driving wheels of tractors and like machines is shown applied thereto, the traction wheel being indicated typically at 10 and having the usual master gear 11 with a plurality of oil feed nozzles 12 located in such relation to the periphery of the master gear as to apply oil directly to the teeth thereof.
Meshing with the teeth of the master gear is a pinion 13 having a crank shaft 14 1921. SerialNo. 483,436. x
mounted in suitable bearingsl on the mud guard of the traction Wheel with the. terminal crank 16 of said shaft connected by a pitman 17 ywith the crank shaft 18 of a pump 19. The pump is arranged within a suitable tank or reservoir 20 closed at the top by a removable cover 20 formed with a central filling mouth 21 having a removable closure or cap 22. The crank shaft 18 is journaled in the opposite wall of the tank and is provided with an exterior crank arm 23 with which the pitman 17 connects. The crank of the shaft 14 is of shorter length than the crank arm 23 and thus while the former rotates as a result of the operation of the pinion 13, the crank arm 23 oscillates only and thus imparts oscillating movement to the crank shaft 18, the crank arms of which are connected with the piston stems 24 of the pistons 25 of therpump 19. The cylinders 26 of the pump, because of the rigid connection betwen the stems and pistons must be mounted for slight oscillating or rocking movement and to this end are disposed on opposite sides of a block 27 and are spanned by a yoke 28 which maintains them in operative engagement with pivots 29. The pistons lit the cylinders loosely enough to permit the oil in the tank to pass between them and the walls of the cylinder so as to be in a position to be forced out v through the feed pipes 23 when the pistons operate as is the case when the crank shaft 18 is oscillated. The feed pipes 23 connect with the nozzles 12 and are preferably fitted respectively with needle valves 24 so that the rapidity with which the oil is fed by the pump to the discharge nozzles 12 may be regulated to suit the quality of the oil and the service to be performed by the gearing.
The outlets of the nozzles being arranged within the mud guard which serves as the housing for the gear are protected from accumulations of dust and other foreign matter and serve to apply oil to the gear teeth under conditions best adapted to minimize the wear thereon and conduct the oil to the parts of the mechanism from which the master gear vreceives motion, and more especially the motor or drive gear 25.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is A lubricating device comprising a tank having a block located therein and mounted upon the bottom thereof, said block being provided with oil ducts, tubes passing ing pivots which engage the cylinders, saidA yoke holding the cylinders against the block pistons loosely mounted in the cylinders, 2t Crank shaft journaled in the tank, and l0 means operatively connecting the crank shaft With the pistons.
In testimony whereof they aliix their signatures.
