CLOTHESLINE Application filed July 12,
St. Louis and State of Missouri, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothesline Heels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to means for reeling a clothesline and has for its object the provision of a device which may be suspended from the shoulders and which will accommodate a long length of clothesline' and which is light, durable and effective for the purpose designed.
Other objectsand advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
lVhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions anc requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.

1923. Serial No. 651,156.
The device comprises a Windlass and a casing, the latter being preferably of cylindrical. form and comprising similar heads 1, a wall 2 and a cover 3. The heads 1 are provided at their outer edge with an inwardly extending flange 4:. The cylindrical wall 2 extends approximately three-fourths the c cumference of the casing, the remaining one-fourth being open to admit of ready access to the interior of the casing.
The
cover 3 is of asize to normally close the 4 opening in the side of the casingand is reinforced at oppositelongitudinal edges by means of a roll 5 which is outwardly disposed. The wall 2 is spaced inwardly from the flanges lof the heads 1- a distance to leave an annular space 6 in which the cover 3 is free to slide circumferentially of the casing so as to expose or close the opening in the side thereof, as-required. The wall 2 is secured to the heads 1 in any preferred way and, as shown, tabs 7 formed with the wall 2 are bent inwardly and are riveted to the heads 1. The reinforcing rolls 5 at opposite edges ofthe cover 3 are formed in their end with notches 8 which receive the inner flanges 4 of the heads 1, thereby assisting materially in holding the cover in place and directing the same in its movement- The rolls 5, in addition to reinforcing opposite edge portions. of the cover, pro vide convenient means for operating the latter both when opening and closing'the same.
Thewindlass comprises a shaft?) and end pieces 10, these parts preferably constituting elements of a sheet metal blank The shaft 9. is of polygonal form,'being-preferably. of triangular outline incrosssection and the end pieces 10 consist of extensions of the sides of the shaft which are bent substantially at a right angle thereto. Stay plates 11 reinforce the ends of the Windlass and are riveted or otherwise secured to the bent extensions forming the ends 10.
The heads 1, as also the stay plates 11, are formed with centrally disposed openings in which are fitted journals 12 and 13, each being of tubular form and the journal 12 having an outer flange 14 at itsouter end, and the journal 13 being provided at its outer end with tabs 15 which are riveted or otherwise secured to a crank 16. The outer ends of the journals 12 and 13 project slightly beyond the outer side of the head 1 and receive the inner ends of links 17 which are loose thereon. lhe journals 12 and 13 pass loosely through the heads 1 and stay plates 11 and are secured within the shaft 9 by means of pins 18. Coincident openings 19 are formed in the journal 12 and shaft 9 to receive the inner end of the clothes line 20. the end disposed within the journal 12 being knotted to prevent its withdrawal. through the opening 19. In this manner the clothesline is attached to the Windlass.
Keepers 21 are applied to the heads 1 near their outer edges and receive the outer ends of the links 17. A shoulder strap is attached at its ends to the outer ends of the links 17. The construction is such as to admit of the journals being applied to either end of the device, whereby the latter may be operated by the right or left hand as found most convenient.
In practi e, the strap 22 is arranged to engage the back of the neck and the shoulders at each side thereof so that the casing; is supported horizontally in front of the person with the crank 16 to the right or to the left as required. Normally the casing is closed by means of the cover 3 which closes the opening in the side thereof. When the cover is slid about the wall 2, the opening is disclosed and the clothesline 20 may he wound upon. or unwound from the Windlass. as required.
It will he understood from the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the invention results in the provision of a clothesline reel which is portable, capable of being easily handled, readily reversible from a right to a left-hand wind. and which is dust-proof, thereby affording protection to the line and preventing the same from soiling wet articles hungthereon for drying.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character specified, a casino; including circular heads having inwardly disposed flanges at their outer edges, a circular wall attached to the heads and spaced inwardly from the flanges thereof a short distance, a cover for closing an opening in a side of the casing and having its edges mounted in the spaces formed between the inner flanges of the heads and the said circular wall and the edges of said cover rolled back on themselves and provided with notches to receive the flanges on the casing; heads.
2. In a device of the character specified. a casing including circular heads having in wardly disposed flanges at their outer 1 a circular wall attached to the heads spaced inwardly from the flanges thereof a short distance and a cover 1r closing an opening; in a side of the cash W and havi its edges mounted in the spaces 7 tween the inner flanges of the head said circular wall, said cover havi 7 site edge portions formed into rolls to provide reinforcing and operating means, said rolls having their ends notched to receive the inwardly disposed flanges of the said head.
3. In a device of the character specified. Windlass comprising; a polygonal shaft having its sides extended and bent suhstantially at a right angle to provide ends, and a stay plate at each end of the Windlass and tached to said bent ends and serving to re inforce the windlass.
