One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings of which, Figure 1 shows an extensible fastening device in longitudinal section on the line 11 of Figure 3, the fastening eye being raised. Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 3.

Thetrunk shown in Figures 5 to 7 consists of the lower part a and of the upper part (B, the two parts being arranged so that the can be telescoped the one in the other. ccording' to the invention the front walls a and the rear walls aof the two parts are inclined relatively to the bottom and top of the trunk but are parallel with one another, so that the cross section of the trunk is rhombic or lozenge-shaped. 'This form presents the advantage that the opening of the trunk is facilitated as no jamming of the front wall of the top part upon the front wall of the bottom part can take place when the top Ipart is rocked about an axis as shown in igure 7 where the parts of the trunk are shown in dotted lines in the opening position. 7
The fastening device shown in Figures 1 to 4 comprises an outer and an inner main member, the' inner member 2 being telescoped into the outer member 1 whilst the fastening eye 3 fixed on the inner member 2 is adapted to engage with a lock 10 in the ordinary manner, being pivotable around a spindle 4 fixed in the inner member2 which latter is extensible and adapted to be locked in position by a detent ,5 controlled in the well known manner by a spring 6. This detent 5 projects through'a lateral aperture 7 in the inner member 2 and is adapted to engage a rack-8 on the outer member'l, so
that when the detent 5 engages with the rack 8, the inner member 2 is locked in pofastening eye3 (Figure 3) and around the axis of the spindle 4 so that the detent is rocked about its pivot when the eye 3 is rotated about the spindle 4. The inclined surface 9 is arranged so that when. the fastening eye 3 is raised to the position shown in Figure 1 the detent is disengaged and when said fastening eye is lowered to the engaging position, the detent is caused to engage one of the slots of the rack 8. If the fastening eye 3 be released after the lock 10 of the trunk has been opened by the key, it moves under the action of the sprin 11 into the opened position (Figure 1) am? the trunk can be opened-or the parts telescoped.
It is to be understood that a device or devices as illustrated in Figure 1-4 of the drawings is or are attached to the front Wall a of the upper part a of the trunk and that each fastening eye 3 engages with a lock 10 in the ordinary manner.
The extensible hinges are secured to the" rear wall a of the upper part a, of the trunk and are similar to the fastening device described and illustrated except that the fastening eye is replaced by a member 12 which forms one member of the hinge and is secured as shown (Figures 5 and 6) to the rear wall of the lower part a of the trunk. Extension of these hinges can only take place after the upper part aF'of the trunk has been swung back to open the trunk.
I claim:
1. A trunk of variable capacity comprising a lower box-shaped part and an upper box-shaped part having front and rear walls substantially parallel with one another and inclined with regard to the top and bottom of the trunk, the cross section of the latter being rhombic in combination with extensiblehinges and fastening devices securable in any position and attached respectively to said front and rear walls, so that the trunk may be opened, or closed and locked, in any extended or in the fully telescoped position.
2. A trunk of variable capacit comprising a' lower box-shaped part an an upper box-shaped part having front and rear walls inclined with regard to the 'top and bottom of the trunk, the cross section of the latter being rhombic in combination and extensible hinges and fastening devices comprising each a hinged member and two telescopic members one of which latter has a spring-influenced detent adapted to co-operate with a rack on the other, relative movement of the hinged and telescopic membersabout their common pivotal axis causing said. detent to be rocked about its pivot by means of a cam on the hinged member, wherein said cam consists of an inclined surface formed on the hinged member about Smdi 5 v moat la common pivotal axis, one end of the springinfluence& detent bearing against said inclined surface, which, when relative move- "ment of the hinged members about their common pivotal axis takes place, moves said end of the detent in a direction substan-' tially parallel with saiol common pivotal axis.
