To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, VINonNzo Home, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Eddystone, county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Boat-Propelling Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention comprehends a novel construction of a manually actuated boat propelling mechanism which is designed to be employed in connection with any desired type of boat or vessel in order that it can be manually propelled through the water and which is adapted to be employed as an auxiliary in case the engine ordinarily employed is out of commission.
lt further comprehends a novel construction of a boat propelling mechanism the parts of which are carried by a framework and which is constructed in such a manner that it will take up a minimum amount of space in the boat.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed description of my 1n-' vention.
For the purpose of illustrating my inven tion, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a typical embodiment thereof which is at present preferred by me since this embodiment will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a boat propelling mechanism, embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents, in elevation, a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Referring to the drawings:

The shaft 12 carries a gear 15 which meshes with a gear 16 mounted on a shaft 17 said shaft 17 being journalled in brackets 18 carried by the supporting framework 2. The shaft '17 is provided with a gear 19 which meshes with a gear 20 secured to a shaft 21 suitably journ'alled; The shaft 21 terminates in a tubu having an aperture 23 to lar housing 22 which is keyed to the housreceive ashaft 24:
mg so as to rotate with it and also be capable of relativelongitudinal adjustment with respect thereto. The shaft 24'andthe housing 22 are secured in their adjusted position by means of a set screw 25. The shaft 2a is mounted in a journal 26 carried by the base 1 and this journal is adapted to pass into or through an aperture at the end of the boat. The shaft 24 carries at its outer end a propeller 27 of any desired or conventional type. j Y i v The operation of my novel boatv propelling mechanism will now be readily apparent to those skilled in this art and is as follows The boat propelling mechanism of the usual construction is placed in the boat so that the journal 26 will pass into or through the aperture at the end of the boat. The propeller shaft 24 is then inserted and fixed in its adjusted position by means of the set screw 25 or its equivalent.
The base 1 is then secured to the bottom of the boat in any desired manner, and if deemed necessary the supporting framework 2 can also be connected with any desired portion of the boat. The operator then actuates the actuating member 9 in the proper direction to cause or rearward movement of the boat and, ow

It will be seen that the propeller shaft is, so to speak, made in sections and consists of the shafts 21 and 24c which are longitudinally adjustable with respect to each other so that the effective length of the propeller shaft can be varied so that the mechanism can be employed in boats of different lengths and the position of the i framework in the boat can be varied so that the cargo or passenger carrying space of the boat will n t be seriously interfered with. v
The propeller shaft takes up but minimum amount of space in the bottom of the boat and the rest of the driving mechanism is substantially contained within the supporting framework 2 which except for the operating handle is contained substantially within the width of the supporting framework,
It will now be apparent that I have devised a' new and useful construction of a boat propelling mechanism which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that said embodiment is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a boat propelling mechanism, a power operated upper shaft, a vertical shaft operated thereby, a lower bearing for said vertical shaft, into which the lower end of the latter is stepped,- a lower horizontal shaft, gearing common to the last mentioned shafts, a propeller shaft made in sections, the inner section being geared to said lower horizontal shaft and the outer propeller shaft section being slidably mounted in said inner section, a propeller on the outer section of said propeller shaft, and fastening means common to said sections to enable them to rotate as a unit.

In a boat propelling mechanism, a power operated upper shaft, a vertical shaft operated thereby, a lower bearing for said vertical shaft, into which the lower end of the latter is stepped, a lower horizontal shaft, gearing common to the last mentioned shafts, a propeller shaft made in sections, the inner section being geared to said lower horizontal shaft and the outer propeller shaft section being slidably mounted in said inner section, a propeller on the outer section of said propeller shaft, and fastening means common to said sections to enable them to rotate as a unit, in combination with a supporting frame, for said upper, vertical, lower and propeller shafts, the base of said frame supporting the stepped bearing for said vertical shaft.
3. In a boat propelling mechanism, a frame formed from a bar having upwardly extending sides which terminate in lateral extensions, a driving shaft journalled on said lateral extensions, a vertical driven shaft journalled on said bar and intergeared with said driving shaft, a third lower horizontal shaftjournalled on said frame and intergeared with said driven shaft, a sectional propelling shaft intergeared with said third shaft, means for locking the sections of said propelling shaft in their desired adjusted positions, a propeller on the outer section of said propeller shaft and means mounted on said driving shaft to be manually actuated by the operator to effect the rotation of said driving shaft.
