Description

Sept. 9 1924.
G. P. vvrlcscsmroNA BINDER Fi-l-ed Dec. 20, 1922 atto@ mq vPatented Sept. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT o-FFAlcE. v'
GEORGE P. WIGGINTON, OF KALAHAZOO, MICHIGAN, ABSIGNOB T KALAKAAZOO IOBE v LEAF BINDER COMPANY, 0F XALAHAZOO, MICHIGAN. p
Application led December 80, lw22. Serial lo. 807,907.'
To all whom. it `may corwem.' v
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. WvIeerN'roN, a citizen of the United States, residmg at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of' 6 Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in binders.
My improved binder is designed for the binding of sheets permanently and is especially designed by me for the permanent binding of sheets which have been used in loose sheet accounting, but which it is desired to preserve for permanent records.
My improvements are, however, adapted for binding sheets generally.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to 'rovide an improved binding means by w ich sheets may be bound together so that it is impossible to separate them without substantial destruction of the binding means.
Second, to provide an improved bindin means for loose sheets which is simple an economical in its parts and very easily mani ulated. v
ObJects pertaining to details and economies of..the construction and operation will definitel appear from the detailed descrip tion to ollow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention ,by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and ointed out in the claims.
A structure whic is a preferred embodiment of the invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a perspective view of a binder embodying the featuresof my invention.
Fig. II is a vertical transversesection on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. I,
the post members and the clamping meansv being shown in full lines.
Fig. III is a detail plan "view of one ofv the sheets for which the binding means illustrated is particularly adapted.
Fig.t IV is a perspective view ofone of the post clamping devices.
F1 V is a plan view of a slightly modied orm of the post clampin device adapted for round posts, a pair o coacting post members being shown 1n section.
In the drawing similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referrin to the drawing, the sheets 1 (see Fig. slots, 2 adapted to receive the binding straps of tem orary binders. It will be understood t at the shape of the holes, however, is not material.
My im roved binder comprises a pair of binding ars 3 hinged to the covers 4 and 5. The binding bars are provided with post members 6 arranged in coacting pairs to slide u on each ot er within the sheet body as is i ustrated in Fig. II- these ost bars bein formed to correspond with t e shape of t e holes in the sheet. The post bars hive interlocking teeth 7 on their meeting e ges.
To lock the post members in clamping enga ement within the sheetvbody I provide clutc devices consisting ofthe bowed body member 8, which ispreferably a. blade spring, and a coacting air of overlap ing clamping members 9 w ich are secure to the outer ends of the sprin body member 8 by means of rivets 10., he body member is provided with a slot-like hole 11 while the clamping membersv have slot-like holes 12 aligned therewith to receive the post members.
These clam ing devices are interposed in the sheet bo y as shown in Fig. II and when the body member 8 is straightened, as by compressing the sheets thereon, the clamping members slide outwardly, the ends of their slots en aging the ost members locking them wit their teet in engagement, and when once engaged in this manner it is impossible by means of a tool or otherwise to release the clamping device or disengage the post members without substantially destroylng the binder. l
In the modification shown -in Fig. V the post members 13 are of halffround cross section, thereby adapting them to sheets havin round holes therein.
y im' roved binding means is very simple an economical ini its parts and in assembling it is only necessa to nterpose the clampin members within t e sheet body, introduce t e posts and place the binding bars carrying the posts together until the clamping devices are collapsed.
I) are provided with T-shaped l their outer ends to Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination in a binder for sheets adapted to receive binding-posts, of binding bars, binding post members mounted on said bars in coactin pairs for slidabie engagement within the s eet body and having coacting interlocking teeth on their meeting edges, and a post clamping device interposed 1n the sheet body and comprising a bowed body member and a pair of overlapping clampin members secured at their outer ends to tghe ends of said body member, said body member and clamping members havin aligned holes therein through which t e post members are disposed, the clamping members being actuated to clamp said post members together with their teeth in interlocking engagement when said body member is straightened within the sheet body by the pressure of the sheets thereon.
2. The combination in a binder for sheets adapted to receive'binding posts, of bindingn bars, binding post members mounted on sai bars in coacting pairs for slidable engagement, within the sheet body, and a post clamping device interposed Ain the sheet body and comprisin a bowed spring and a pair of overlapping c amping members secured at their outer ends to the ends of said spring, said spring and clam ing members having aligned holes therein t rough which the post members are disposed, the clamping members being actuated to clamp said post members to ether when the sheet body is pressed upon t e spring.
3. The vcombination in a binder for sheets ada ted to receive bindin posts, of coacting 'bin ing post members a apted for slidable engagement within the sheet body and having coacting interlocking, teeth on their meeting edges, and a post clamping device interposed in the sheet body and comprising a normally bowed body member and a pair of overlapping 'clampingh members secured at t e ends of said body member, said body member and plates having aligned holes therein through which the post members are disposed, whereby the clamping members are actuated to clamp the post members together by the collapsing of the body member thereon.
4. The combination in a binder for-sheets ada ted to receive bindin posts, of coacting bin ing post members a apted for slidable engagement within the sheet body, and a post clamping device interposed in the sheet body and comprising a normally bowed body member and a pair of overlapping clamping members secured at their outer ends to the ends otsaid body member, said body member and plates havingv aligned holes therein through which the post members are disposed, whereby the clamping members are actuated to clamp the post members together by the collapsing of the body member there- 5. The combination in a binder for sheets adapted to receive binding posts, of binding bars, post members arranged on said binding bars in* coacting airs for slidable engagement within the s eet body and havin coacting teeth on their meeting edges, an post clampin means adapted to be disposed within the s eet body and comprising a bowed body member and ay pair of clamplng members secured to the ends thereof and oppositely engaging the post members Whereb they are clamped together with their teet in interlocking en agement when said body member is straig tened within the sheet bo y. f
6. The combination in a binder for sheets adapted to receive binding posts, of binding bars, post members arranged on said binding bars 1n coacting airs for slidable engagement within the s eet body, and ost clam ing means adapted to be dispose within t e sheet body and com rising a bowed body member and a pair ci) clamping members secured to the ends thereof4 andoppositely engaging the post members whereby the are clamped together when said body mem r is straightened within the sheet body.
'7. The combination in a binder for sheets adapted to receive binding posts, of coacting post members adapted for slidable engagement within the sheet body and having coacting teeth on their meeting ed es, and post clamping means adapted to be disposed within the sheet body andoomprising a bowed body member and a pair of clampin members secured to the ends thereof an oppositely engaging the post members whereby they are clamped together with their teeth in interlocking engagement when said body menloer .is straightened within the sheet 8. The combination in a binder for sheets having holes therein adapted toreceivebinding posts, of coacting post members ada ted for slidable engagement within the s eet body, and post clamping means adapted to n be disposed within the sheet body and comprisin a bowed body member and a pair of clamping member ssecured to the ends thereof andoppositely engaging the post members whereby they are clamped together when said body member is straightened within the sheet body.
vIn witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
