Description

Sept. 2 1924. v
S. W. METZ foorBBRusH Filed Abril 4, 1923 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 2,1924.
UNITED STATES SILAS W. METZ, 0F GONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOTHBRUSH.
Application filed April 4,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAs W. Man, a citizen of the United States, residing at Connellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toothbrushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tooth brushes.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a tooth brush of simple and efficient construction by means of which the teeth may be quickly and thoroughly brushed and cleansed, the brush being so constructed as to effectually clean between the teeth. A further object is to provide a tooth brush so constructed as to enable the user to thoroughly clean between the three rearmost teeth on the upper and lower aws. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an underneath view of the brush;
Figure 2 is a side view;
Figure 3 is a front view showing the manner of using the brush for cleaning the outer. surfaces of the teeth;
Figure 4 is a plan view showingthe manner of using the brush for clean ngthe lower teeth. a
I construct the brush with a handle 1 from which extends a head 2 which is of substantially U-shape in outline. This head includes an arcuate bridge 3 which extends an equal distance to each side of handle 1, this bridge being positioned substantially in the plane of the handle. An arm 4 projects from each end of bridge 3. These arms converge toward each other, and each arm is curved upwardly, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The curvature of the arms 4 is intended to conform to the normal curvature of the users jaw, and the slant or angle of these arms relative to bridge 3 is intended to conform to the slant or angle of the jaws when the mouth is open for brushing the teeth. Each arm 4'is probe readily cleaned simultaneously and, by I imparting a vertical reciprocating motion to the brush the bristles 5 serve to effectu- 1923. Serial No. 629,866.

ally clean between the teeth. By holding the brush with head 2 thereof in horizontal position the upper surfaces of the teeth of the upper or lower jaws may be quickly and thoroughly cleaned. Attention is called to the fact that when the head 2 of the brush is in vertical position, the curved arms 4 conform to the curvature of the jaw thus insuring thorough brushing and cleaning between the teeth as well as on the outer surfaces thereof. By holding the brush in horizontal position so that handle 1 is in contact with the cheek, the inner arm 4 is so positioned as to contact with the inner or rearmost teeth at that side of the jaw so that by reciprocating the brush across the teeth bristles 5 will act to thoroughly brush the.
upper surfaces of the teeth and also to effectually brush bet-ween the'teeth so as to thoroughly clean the same and remove all particles of food or other foreign materials. It is a known fact that the rearmost or inner teethor molars decay more rapidly than the other teeth and this is due primarily to'the fact that these are the chewing teeth and I that particles of food become pressed or simple and efficient means for readily ac-" complishing this very desirable result and, in this respect, is a decided improvement over the ordinary type of tooth brush.
Also, as above pointed out, my brush provides very simple and efficient means whereby the teeth may be thoroughly cleansed and brushed much more quickly than with the ordinary type of tooth brush.
What I claim is 1. In a tooth brush of thecharacter described, a substantially U-shaped head having its arms. of arcuate shape and converging away from the bight portion of the head, the bight portion of the head also being of arcuate shape, and a handle extending from the central part of the bight portion of said head, the arms being provided with depending bristles. c
2. In a tooth brush of the character described, a substantially U-shaped head having its arms of arcuate shape andconverging away froln the bi'glnz portion" of the head, the bight portion of the head also being of areuate shape, and a handle extending from the, central part of the bight 5 portion of said head, the arms being provided with depending bristles terminating a short distance beyond the angles of the arms with the bight portion of the head.
3, In attooth brush of the character de- 10 scribed, a handle provided at one end with an integral head of substantially. U-sha-pe, said head having its arms of arcna-te shape and converging away from the bightpor% tion of the head, said handle being disposed substantially in the plane of the head and 15 thearins being provided with downwardly directed bristles.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SILAS W. METZ.
