To all whom t may concer/L.'
Be it known that l, JOHN N. Ci-mnwicn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Level, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a novel construction of a levelling device, and more particularly to means for'enabling the degrees of inclination of various objects to be readily ascertained and to be visible when desired upon actuating a push button to close the circuit of a small incandescent lamp positioned in proximity to the indicating devices, and comprises a plurality of transparent dials having graduations thereon and hands or pointers visible at the exterior of each of said dials and coacting therewith, said pointers being actuated by gravity and their position being' ascertained from a light chamber formed within the level for the reception of an incandescent light, which is lighted when desired by said push button.
It further consists of a novel construction of a level having a passage therein for containing electrical connections and a 4transverse bottom chamber containing the electric light and its battery, the out-er walls of said chamber being transparent and the weighted hands or pointers being located preferably at the exterior of the transparent walls and mounted upon a shaft common to both pointers and located within a tube or sleeve which may be secured at its ends in said transparent walls.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since they will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, al though it is to be understood that the various inst-rumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organi- Zation of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure l represents a perspective view of a level embodying my invention.
Serial No. 656,409. f
Figure 2 represents a section on line 2 2 Figure 3.
Figure 3 represents a section on line 3-3 Figure 2. f
Figure 4 represents a section on line 4-4 Figure 2.
Figures 5 and 6 represent a modification.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring' to the drawings.
l designates my novelVK construction of level, the same comprising a body portion 2, which has the transverse drum 3 therein at whose outer ends are the walls 4 which are transparent and provided .with gradual tions as will be understood from Figures l and 2.
5 designates a sleeve, which is centrally located within the transverSC drum or chamber 3, and whose end-s are supported in the walls t, within which sleeve freely revolves the shaft 6 ythe outer ends of which. are threaded for the reception of nuts 7, Whereby the hands or pointers 8 are secured in position, it being understood that the sleeve 5 is stationary, and that the shaft 6 and pointers 8 can move or oscillate as a unit, the shaft 6 freely rotating in the sleeve 5 and the pointers S being weighted at their bottom ends, as at 8x and always being in a pendant position or vertical, n.0 matter what inclination the level 2 may assume.
9 designates a vertical passage in the body of the level, which communicates with .the bottom passage 10, containing the battery 1l, to which is connected the small incandescent light 12. 13 and 14- designate the electrical connections which form the electrical circuit to the battery 1l, said circuit being opened and closed by the push button l5, which latter as well as the lamp and battery may be of any conventional construction and need not be described in detail. The inner' end of the battery casing 11 may extend through the hole 16 in the drum 3, and thus lock the latter in position. The length of the sleeve 5 is such that when the nuts 7 are tightened, all the parts are securely and accurately held in assembled position. It will be evident that the outer peripheries of the walls 4 may be secured to the contiguous ends of the drum 3, if desired by any suitable means and that a level conand described.y a preferred j embodiment structed in accordance with my invention will be. durable, accurate and reliable and the readings can be ascertained Jfrom either side and will be readily visible at all times.
lIt willffurther be apparent that my device can be utilized at night, since the electric light appliance renders the readings visible at a distance of several feet and since the light is'only in operation when in use or when the push button is depressed, it will be apparent that there is no undue drain upon the battery l1.
It will further be apparent that by my novel invention a very quick and accurate movement will be imparted to the 'pointers S, since the same are vertical under all conditions and by the employment ot my device I am enabled to determine any degree of inclination, as well as the horizontal vand vertical status of any objectto which the ,device may be applied. f'
In Figures 5 and 6, I have shown a ring 16, havingk the pointed ends of the horizontal expansion bar 17 secured therein, trom which the weighted pointers 8 are suspended on the screws 19, the washers 18 being interposed between the pointers 8 and the bar 17. rI`he push button 2O in Figures `5 and 6, v actuates the v.push rod 21, which closes the circuit by its contact with the bat- 'tery button 22 of the battery 23, the light being indicated at 24. The transparent material 4, seen in all the figures is preferably celluloid.
It will now beapparent that I have devised a novel and useful level, which embodies the featuresy otadvantagef enumerated as desirablein the statement of `the invention and 'the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown thereof which will give in practice satis- "factory and reliable results,`it is to be understood that suchembodiment is susceptim ble of modilic'ation in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scopey of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a device of the character stated, a body, a drum to be illuminated disposed transversely of said body and adapted to support a level, the drum side wall being apertured entirely therethrough and said body having a substantially longitudinal passage therein'in register with the drum aperture, a casing enclosing a batteryarranged in said passage and protruding through the drum aperture into said'drum to interlock with the latter, a light bulb within said drum carried by said battery casing, a push butt-on located ,upon said body, and an electrical connection between the battery and said push button.l
2. In a device of the character stated,`a body, a drum to be illuminated transversely of said body, and adapted tol support a level, the drum side wall being apertured entirely body having a, substantially.longitudinal passage therein in register with the drum aperture, and -having a substantially vertical passage communicating7 with the firsty mentioned passage, battery arranged in said longitudinal passage and protruding through the drumaperture into said drum to interloclrwiththe latter, a light ybulbl within said drum carried by said battery lcasing, located upon said body'above the vertical passage and an electrical connection between the battery and said push button which connection is arranged in said vertical passage.
