' A. O. W. HANSEN ELEVATOR Filed July 8, 1922 Ii l ATTORNEY AUGUST o. w. Hansen, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
r'rnr oFFicE.
e Ennvnron.
Application filed July 8,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I. AUGUST O. Vf. HAN# sEN, a citizen of the United .States, resicling at New York. in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to elevators and 4has for its main object the provision of an elevator which is adapted to carry and lift a load of bulk from one level to another.
Another object is to providean elevator which has the complete lifting mechanism mounted beneath the platform so as to utilize a minimum amount of space. In this regard it is to be noted that the usual elevator has the lifting mechanism mounted in a pit adjacent to theI elevator shaft consequently using more space than is required with this eleva-tor.
These and other objects will become lapparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to the likenamed parts in the drawing. i
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the elevator shaft with the doors in closed position.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view partly in section of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a wiring diagram showing the circuits leading t0 the reversible motor.
Describing the Vdrawing in detail, the nu meral 1 indicates a substantially square lift platform which has a semi-circular arch 2 secured to its top side.
The upper portion of the elevator well f1 is framed by the side channels 3 from which anchor hooks 5 project.
Pulleys 6 rotatably secured to the said channels 3 cradle cables 7. One end of each of said cables 7 is secured to the platform 1 and have a rectangular counter weight 8 secured to the free ends thereof.
formed into a worm 15 which mesheswith the aforesaid worm gear 11. v v
A pair of lift cables 16 are secured to the hooks 5 and pass downwardly and around the platform pulleys 17, the vlatter being secured vin brackcts'lS. The ends of said lift cableslG are secured t0 the grooved winding drums 12 sov that in rotating the latter,
the cable will be paid out or takenv up from the lower peripheral surface to hooks at the rear end of the shaft 4 and pass around the rear platform pulley 20, the latter being secured in brackets 21.` The lower end of said cables 19 are secured to the winding drums 12 and take up or pay out from the upper peripheral surface of the said grooved drums. v f
A switch handle 22 is mounted on the circular arch 2 and is connected in electrical series to the motor 13 by the leads 25 and 23. The circuit is normally open and rotation of the switch handle closes the said cir` cuit. An electrical battery 24: connected in series to the lead 2/1 energizes the motor 13 when the circuit is closed. A reversible type of switch may be installed in the circuit to reverse the rotation of the motor. A diagrammatic view ofv the reversing switch is shown in Figure 1, in which the field coil of the motor is indicated by the numeral QD and is connected in parallel 4with the armature of the motor thru a polel changer or reversing switch 30.
The elevator well 4t is provided with the 'usual type vof doorsf27 which are secured verating the reversing switch 30 in conjunction with the switch 22, the platform will be lifted or lowered as desired, by the motor mechanism. As the worm 15 meshes wit-h the worm gear 11, the grooved drums 12, at the. outer ends of the gear shaft, 1(),`
will rotate and take up the ` cables 16 and 19 therebylifting the platform 1 tov the up per level. Inrising to the upper level, they arch 2 contacts with the underside of the doors 27 and rotates the latter to the open. position. As the elevator is lowered and as the doors 27 at all times lean toward the arch frame 2, said doors will automatically close when the platform is descending.
I claimt- An elevator comprising a vertical inorahle platform, a Well receptive of ,said platform, brackets on the corners of said platform, pulleys mounted on said brackets, additional brackets between each pair o pulleys, a. shaft rotatable in the last-named brackets7 grooved drums 'on said shaft aligned with the pulleys, cables secured to the upper portions and at each Corner of the well, the lower ends of said cables loeing trained about said pulleys, said pulleys beingadanted to divert the course oi. said cables to the horizontal position, each drum having one pair of cables secured thereto, one -Cahle' on each drum entering the saine tangential to its upper periphery, the op-` posite cable being secured tangentiallyon the lower periphery of the saine drum, the cables on each drum being` adapted. to be Wound on the saine in opposite directions, a gear on said drum sha-ft, a motor secured to the movable platform, and a Worm shaft engaging the gear for rotatingsaid Vdrum shaft.
In Witness whereof, I aiiix kmy signature.
AUGUST O. WV. HANSEN.
