Description

O. O. KOLSTAD MAIL BOX 2 Sheas-Shefa Filed June 50 1922 these` snugly. The metal is rebent upon itself as indicated at 15r1 to define an outer sleeve l5e which fits within the opening in the wall, this outer sleeve terminating in a ange 15 which bears against the face of the wall for providinga neat finish. The provision of members 15 and 16 is important as they are adjustably telescopically'` engaged upon the right angularly extending ends of the sections 10 and 11 so as to fit -walls of different thicknesses.
Hinged upon the lower edge of the projecting end oi the lower section 11 is a door 17 which swings downwardly when opened to form a continuation of the inclined loot* toni 1.4 so as to constitute a chute which will facilitate the discharge of mail. This door is of course provided with any suitable lock,
18 and handle 19.
The projecting end of the upper section 10 is provided with a hinged door 20 which swings upwardly when opened and which is so arranged as to exclude rain and draft. This door is of course provided with any suitable handle 21 by 'meansof which it may be Opened by the mail carrier.
Pivoted at 22 within the angle oi the u.p per section 10 is a compound curved plate 23 which is for the purpose of preventing the removal of mail through the upper end of the device in an obvious manner while not interfering in any way with theA ino of mail matter in the device.
in installing this structure in apartment houses and the like, that is in the entrance halls or lobbies thereof, it is desirable that,` theinlet and outlet doors be in the same side of the wall. In Figures 5 and 6 I have shown the device arranged in this way. in these gures it will be obvious that the section 1l is associated with the section 10 in the reverse manner to that shown in Figure 1 so that the projectin'y ends vo both sections will be at the saine sidie of the wall. Owing to the fact that the sections are mei ely telescopically slidably engaged it is apparent that there is no diiiiculty in raryinglthe arrangement.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it is apparent that ll have thus provided a simply constructed mail box Y,which is adjustable to meet various conditions., especially variations in thel ,widths 'or thicknesses of walls into which it 'is built. The various advantages tothe derived *from the use of the structure will be deposit-- necesa-e apparent from an inspection of the drawings when considered with the above explanation so that further elaboration is deemed unnecessary.
While l have shown and described the prefererd embodiment of the invention7 it is of course to be understood that l reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction 'and arrangement of parts as will not depart fromv the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A mail box adapted to be built into' a wall and` comprising a pair of vertically arranged sections disposed in telescoping engagement wherebyv to be extensible or contractable, each section being substantially l.- shapcd whereby to provide a right angular extension adapted for location within an opening in the wall, and a face plate formed from a single sheet of metal bent upon itself'- to define a double ply flange engaged. telescopically upon the right angular extensions and fitting within the wall'opening, the face plate being further formed with a sleeve portion projecting outwardly beyond the lface of the wall, the sleeve portion being spaced inwardly of the double ply lange to define a socket space receiving the tree end. of the right angular extension, said sleeve portion being telescoped within the right angular extension.
2. A mail box comprising an elongated .recepacle adapted to be built into the wall or a b ilding, said receptacle being formed ot' slidably connected sections, the upper section being provided at its upper end with a right angular extending end portion extending through an opening in the wall and being provided with a door, and the lower end et the lower section being :termed with a right angular extension extending through opening in the wall or" the building' and provided with a door. and a plate piroted with in the angle of the upper section lfor preventing extraction oif mail througli the door ol'v the upper nieniber7 said plate being pivoted nearer its rear edge than its forward edge whereby the forward edge will normally overhalance the rear end lie upon the bottom of the right angular' extensions of the uppermost section.
ln testimony whereof 1 aiiix my signature.
