vented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire Pots, of which the following is a specification.
'lhis invention relates to fire pots, and more particularly to a device for protecting the burner in order to prevent the port opening becoming clogged with carbon deposits.
The object of my device .is to provide an easily operated device which can be actuated from outside the chimney. A. further object is to so construct the device that it will be easily set into position and can be quickly and easily actuated so as to change the position of the device when desired.
In the present form of lire pots, the burner is provided with a small opening in which the vaporizea fuel is ejected. During the `oriming operation, when the priming iiuid is burning in the priming trough in order to heat the coils so that they will vaporize the fuel, this priming fuel burns with a yellow Vflame and a large amount of carbon is deposited on the burner. This often accrumulates to such an extent that the port opening in the burner tube becomes clogged with the carbon deposits, and the port opening must be cleaned before the fire pot can again be used. To clean this port opening it is necessary to remove the burner from the chimney by unscrewing it from the preheating coils and withdrawing the same from out the chimney.
My device aims to overcome this diliiculty by protecting the port opening in the burner tube during the priming operation and my device can he withdrawn so as to open the port opening in the burner tube when the preheating tube has been raised to a suflicient temperature to vaporize the fuel. At this time, the vapor under pressure is ejected through the port opening and burns with a blue flame, which of course, does not tend to form carbon in the port opening, as it is the yellow flame which causes the carbon deposits to accumulate on the burner. ln my device, the carbon deposits are accumulated on the outside surface of the protecting sleeve and are not allowed to clog the port opening in the burner tube.

The fire pot comprises a fuel oil reservoir a, a grid I), supported thereon, and a chimney c supported from the grid. rllhe fuel is fed upwardly through the pipe connection Z to which is. connected the preheating coil e. The lower end of the preheating coil is provided with an elbow fitting in which` the iburner tube g is threaded. The chimney is provided with an opening 71. through which the burner tube projects, the outer end of the tube being flattened as at z', so that it may be gripped by a wrench for screwing or unscrewing the burner into the elbow fitting The priming trough is located near the bottom of chimney. The said priming trough is adapted to hold a su'liicient quantity of lioL uid fuel which is lighted to throw heat upwardly onto the prelieating coil, in order to raise the temperature of the preheating coil so that it will vaporize the fuel before it is ejected through the port opening if: in the burner tulbe g.
ln order to protect this burner opening le, which is a` very line pinhole drilled into the burner tube, l provide a sleeve m which is slidably supported on the burner tube. This sleeve m is provided at its outer end with a downturned ear n which is positioned outside of the chimney as shown in Figs. l and 2. This downturned ear n acts as a handle by which the said sleeve may be slid along the burner tube. In Fig. l, l show the sleeve m forced inwardly, the sleeve thereby extending over the port opening Z?. In Fig. 2, I show the sleeve m pulled outwardly to open the port opening 1 when it' is desired to burn the vapor generated in the preheating coil.
During the priming operation, the fuel in the priming trough burns with a yellow liame, which tends to free the carbon from the fuel and to deposit the same on the burner. lNhen the sleeve is in position as shown in Fig. 1, the carbon will be deposited on the outside surface of the sleeve, thereby maintaining the port opening in the burnerY tube tree-from any carbon deposits. When the priming liquid has been burned the sleeve may be. withdrawn into the position as shown in Fig. 2, at which time the opening lc is opened, and the generated vapor is ejected from the port opening and burns with a blue flame. Obviously, I have provided a simple device by which the burner openingk maybe kept free of carbon accumulations, enabling the burner to always remain in a proper" condition and not requiring thel removal of the same in order to clean the port opening as is necessary with the present lire pots.
' The sleeve fm is provided with a projection 0*, that is bent slightly inwardly to bind the sleeve on the burner tube so it cannot slip when in place.
What I claim is:
`l. In a fire pot, the combination of a chimney provided with a priming trough, a preheating tube suspended within the chimney, a burner connected therewith and provided with a port through which the vapor generated in the preheating tube is ejected,v and a guard movably supported by said burner and adapted to close said port during the priming operation to maintain the port opening in the said burner tree romcarbon deposits.
2. In a fire pot, the combination ot a chimney provided with a priming trough, a preheating tube suspended within the chimney, a burner tube connected therewith and provided with a port through which the vapor generated in the preheating tube is ejected, and a Sleeve movably supported on said burner tube and arranged to close Said port opening during the priming operation to maintain the port opening in the said burner tube free from carbon.
3. In a Ilire pot, the combination of a chimney provided with a priming trough, a preheating tube suspended within the chimney, a burner connected therewith and provided with a port through which the vapor generated in the preheating tube is ejected, and a guard slidably supported by said burner and adapted to close said port during the priming operation to maintain the port opening in the said burner iree from carbon deposits.
4. In a fire pot, the combination of a chimney provided with a priming trough and an opening inthe side thereof, a pre* heating tube suspended within the chimney, a burner tube connected therewith and projected through the said opening, and provided with a port through which the vapor generated in the preheating tube is ejected, and a sleeve slidably supported on the burner tube and adapted to close said port during the priming operation to maintain the port opening inthe burner tube free from carbon, said sleeve projected through the opening in said chimney whereby said sleeve may be actuated from the outside.
5. In a lire pot, the combination of a chimney provided with a priming trough, a preheating tube Suspended within the chimney a burner tube connected therewith and provided with a port through which the vapor generated in the preheating tube is ejected, said burner tube projected through the walls of the chimney and flattened at the end thereof, and a sleeve provided with a downturned ear adapted to engage with the chimney wall to limit the inward movement of the sleeve whereby the sleeve when A forced inwardly to the limit of its movement is adapted to close the port in the burner tube during the priming operation, n

6. In a tire pot, the combination of a chimney provided with a. priming trough, av preheating tube suspended within the chimney, a burner connected therewith and provided with a port through which the Vapor generated inv thepreheating tube is ejected, and a guard tor closing said port during the priming operation to maintain the port opening in the said burner free from carbon deposits.
7. In a lire pot, the combination of a chimney provided vwith a priming trough, a preheating tube suspended within the chimney, a burner connected therewith and provided with a port through which the vapor generated in the preheating tube is ejected, and a guard tor closing said port during the priming operation to maintain the port opening in the said burner free from carbon deposits, said guard j projecting through the walls of the chimney so that the same may be actuated trom without the chimney.
