Patented Aug. 26, 1924,
UNITED STATES SEBI-DON M. BOOTH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHOE-PO'LISHING DEVICE.
Application filed February 3, 1923.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SHELDON M. BOOTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Polishing Devices, of which the following, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to devices which are used after a boot or shoe has been treated with a polish or dressing, to obtain a high degree of gloss thereon.
Among the objects of this invention is to obtain a device of the kind named which is very effective in use; which can be easily changed for use on tan colored shoes after having been used on shoes to which a black polish or dressing has been applied. To obtain a device of the kind named which is easily understood, conveniently handled, not liable to be broken or to get out of order, and a device from which the polishing' material thereof can be readily removed from the base thereof, when said polishing material is worn or badly soiled, and unused polishing material substituted for said removed material.
In the drawing referred to, Fig. l is a horizontal section on line 1 1 of Fig. 2, viewed in the direction indicated by arrows.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation, on line 2 2 of Fig. l, viewed in the direction indicated by arrows; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3h55 of Fig. 2, viewed in the direction indicated by arrows.
A reference character applied to designate a given part indicates said part throughout the several figures of the drawing wherever the same appears.
A represents a block which forms the base of the device, and which is preferably made of wood. Base A is provided on the sides thereof with longitudinally extending grooves a, a, and at the ends thereof with the laterally extending grooves a and a. The sides of the base A are curved adjacent to the ends thereof, said curved portion eX- tending to near the laterally extending grooves. B represents a strip of polishing material, preferably of sheep skin having the wool thereon. This strip B is of sufficient length to be applied intermediate the length thereof to the cross element of U-shaped member D, of member C, D, E. Member Serial No. 616,746.
C, D, E, comprises duplicate springs C, C, one of which is placed on each side of base A, in grooves a., a. And the U-shaped end members D and E, which are preferably made of wire, are attached at one of thee ends thereof to one of the ends of a spring C, with the cross element of said members extending across the ends of the base, in
the grooves a', a, and the other ends ofv handles of projections against which the thumb and a finger of the hand of a person desiring to discard a used strip of polishing material and to replace said used strip by an unused strip, is forced to move member D into position to permit removal of said used strip and replacement thereof by an unused strip. The eyelets e, e, serve as handles or projections against which the thumb and a finger of one hand of a person about to change the device so that it'can be used on a differently colored polish or dressing from that with which it has theretofore been applied. The ends of members D and E are in slots a, a, and the cross element of said members extend laterally across base A in grooves a', a.
By applying a thumb and finger to eyelets d, d, and forcing member D to the left, as viewed in Figs. l and 2, the strip B may be placed under the cross element of member D, in groove c, and drawn through between said cross element and the endl of the base to intermediate the ends thereof, after which it may be doubled over upon itself to entend on one side of base A, from one end of said base to the other end thereof, a double thickness of said strip may then be inserted under the cross element of member E, (which is in groove 0). To make the last named insert yof the two thicknesses of strip B underneath the cross element of member E, the thumb and a finger of one hand is forced against eyelets, e, e, to move said member E to the right, as viewed in Figs. l and 2, relative to base A. After the ends of strip E are inserted under the cross element of member E, as described, and before said member E is released from the grasp of the person so forcingl it to the right, said ends are drawn to make that portion of strip E which is on the side of base A, Ltautfafter which member E is released, and springs C, C, draw said member E towards the left, as viewed in Figs. l and 2, thereby drawing the part of said member E which is in end groove a against strip B with suiicient torce to hold said ends firmly in place.
F, F, respectively represent staples which lare forced into base A, over members D and E, respectively, between the eyelets'd, d and e, e, andthe ends of said members D, E, which are attached to the ends of springs C, C, to limit the movement of said members D and E, on base A. ,y
When it is desired to use the device on a differently colored polish or dressing from t Y, that with which it has been used, member E vis again forced to the right, as viewed in Figs. l and 2, in the manner hereinbefore described, the ends of strip B are drawn out from between the cross element of meni- `ber E and the end'of base A which is adjacent thereto, and said strip is then turned on the cross element` of member D toA the other side of base A; and thereupon member E is again forced to the right, as viewed in Figs. l and 2, and the ends of strip B are again placed underneath the cross element of member E and said ends are drawn to make the strip taut on the side of base A, as hereinbefore recited, and said member E is again released, so that springs C, C, may draw said cross element of member E to the left, as viewed in Figs. l and 2, and said cross element will move into said groove c, with suiicient force to hold strip B l in place.
From the hereinbeiiore described construcltion of this device it is evident that in the use thereof there is, at all times, a layer of polishing material which is being used which has between it and the base a layer of polishing material, and thereby said last named layer of polishing material, which is notin use, is preserved in a clean condition relative to the layer which is being used; and said layer which is not in use forms an elastic or yielding support for the layer which is in use.
The application of the characters D and E to the U-shaped members to which the springs G, C, are attached is to assist the description and operation of the device; as the device when constructed as described, will permit the insertion of the strip o polishing material under the cross element of either one of the lmembers D and E, and said strip drawn through between said cross element and the end of the base until said i cross element is intermediate the ylength ot said strip.
I claim;
A shoe polishing device comprising a rio-id block, the :front and back of said block eing substantially alike and the ends of the block being rounded,a transversely extending groove being provided in each of the rounded ends of said block and said block being further provided in each side with a longitudinally extending groove communieating at each end with the transverse groove, springs positioned in the longitudinal grooves, and a U-shaped member attached to one end of each of said springs` a second U-shaped member attached to the opposite ends of said springs, said second U- shaped member being provided with manipulating lugs, a strip of polishing material looped intermediate its ends under the cross element of said first named U-shaped member and clamped in one of the lateral grooves, with the free ends of said strip adapted to extend over either face of said block and under the cross element of the second U-shaped member in the vlateral groove at the opposite end of said block.
