M I z/z/ Patented Aug. 2%, 1924.
UNETEE) STATES CLARENCE FANCHER, 05: HUDSON FALLS, NEW YORK.
CUTTING Application filed. February 26, 1923.
To aZZ whom z't may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE FANCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hudson Falls, in the county of VVashington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to what may be termed devices especially adapted for severing or dividing up drawing linen or paper into the usual required sized pieces or sheets to meet the wants or conveniences of the draftsman in the drafting room and the trade in keeping the same in stock for sale.
The invention has for its object, among other things, to carry out these ends with facility, simplicity and inexpensively; to provide against miss-cuts and accordingly wastage of drawing-linen or paper; to provide for gauging the depth of the penetration of the severing instrument-ality or knife in cutting the material or linen, as well as to provide for the assured straight-cutting thereof.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent together with the foregoing, from the following further disclosure of the invention.
The invention therefore consists of certain instrumentalities and features of construction substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and pointed out by the appended claims.
In the drawing accompanying the following specification and disclosing the preferred embodiment or one form of my invention it will be understood that various changes and modifications as relate to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as covered by the appended claims and in which drawing Fig. 1. is a broken plan view of the device disclosing the embodiment of my invention, parts being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the drawing-linen or paper holding clamps.
Fig. 3 is a similar vertical section taken through the device at right angles to the line of 2.
Fig. 4: is a detached perspective showing a clamp with its resilient or spring retaining member.
Fig. 5 is a like View as relates to the trac- TABLE.

ing linen or paper clamp, a screw and lever member however, substituting the clamp retaining resilient or spring member.
As characteristic features of my invention, I employ a plurality or number of sections 1, preferably of smooth plane boards or panels having under and over projecting interfitting edges. These sections are rectangular in general outline and assembled for mutual cooperation, being hinged together as at 2, preferably along their longitudinal edges at suitable points or at the eX treme ends upon alternate opposite sides thereof, whereby they (said sections) may be, and are thus adapted to fold compactly upon each other as disclosed for ready shipment or storage. These sections or result-ant leaves forming what is termed a table, are further hinged, or rather the lateral or side ones, at their ends, as at 3, to transverse end member 3 the connections or hinging being effected therebetween upon the same sides of the end members 3" and the corresponding or end leaves 1. The leaves are arranged so as to provide therebetween narrow longitudinal and transverse spaces 8 and 9 traversing each other, respectively, throughout, which provides for the insertion thereinto, of say a pocket knife, and the suitable severing of the tracing linen or drawing paper into the required sized sheets accordingly, as may be provided for by the relative graduation apart of the spaces.
Suitably constructed or shaped clamps with penetrating points on under side 10 are arranged or secured at the end of the leaves or members 1 of the table and when clamped down the points penetrate the linen or tracing cloth as shown, which is clamped down and effectively held thereon, the under projecting points securely holding the linen when making the final cuts, the linen or tracing cloth being carried initially over the members t and; under the clamps when raised, as shown. The clamps, themselves, are suitably held in position by means of resilient member 11 suitably secured to the table and adapted to allow the clamps to be elevated and automatically held thereby as indicated in dotted lines when initially applying and securing the linen or tracing cloth upon the table, the clamps, of course, being sprung down in holding position upon the tracing material by suitably tripping the resilient members, as seen in e isclosure.
The tableleaves or sections, it will be noted, are stepped at their initial adjacent edges as at 12 to provide for limiting the extent of the penetration of the tracinglinen severing knife and thus provide for maintaining a straight cut of said edges, otherwise stated to obviate a miss-cut or miss-cuts, as previously stated.
The modified form of clamp-retaining device, designated as 13, in Fig. 5 comprises, as above indicated, a screw-threaded bot member 13* suitably threaded preferably into one of the hinge leaves or sections and having a handle or arm 13 which is adapted, by suitably grasping and turning the same so as to cause it to suitably frictionally engage the upper surface of the clamp, whereupon said arm or handle will produce abinding action thereon and thus secure the clamp in effective or locked position. It is to be understood, of course, that my table or device as herein described in detail or requiring the use of expedients in carrying out the same is not restricted or limited as relates to the breadth and scope of the claims, to any additional appendage or means of sup ort therefor in facilitating the utilizing t e same, although such may be shown in connection with the drawing or implied by the description as may be read.
into the specification.
