UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BOTT, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO BASTIAN BROS. C02, 0.71 ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
MEANS FOR UNITING TWO METAL PARTS.
Application filed January 3, 1922.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Born a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Uniting Two Metal Parts, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for uniting two metal parts and more particularly to the type in which one of the parts is in the form of a sheetmetal member having a central opening and an annular flange pro jecting from one face of the member about the opening with its inner wall forming a cylindrical surface and the base of the inner wall flaring slightly. An object of this invention is to so construct the other member that an effective engagement between such other member and the inner wall of the cylindrical flange is maintained against accidental displacement in an inexpensive manner.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a face view of a portion of a sheet metal member with the other member at tached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the two members about to be connected;
Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the two members after they are connected; and
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the two members connected together.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, 1 indicates the sheet metal member which may be the radiator of an automobile, this radiator having a central opening with a cylindrical flange 2 projecting from one face of the cylindrical wall 1 about the opening. The inner wall of this cylindrical flange has a cylindrical surface except at its base 3 where it flares to a slightly greater diameter.
The member 4:, in this instance, is in the form of a name plate to be attached to the radiator and has projecting fromjits rear face a cylindrical flange 5, the outer surface of which is in the form of a cylinder. In this instance, the flange 5 projects from a disk 6 which is welded to the face of the Serial No. 526,838.
In uniting the parts, the flange 5 is forced into the flange 2. As the flange 5 is formed of thin sheet metal, it is resilient and is compressed by passage into such flange 2, thus maintaining a firm connection between the two members. The name plate abuts the sheet metal member 1 about the opening and renders difficult the passage of a sharp instrument between the name plate 6 and the sheet metal member 1 and also tends to prevent any rocking movement of the flange 5 in the flange 2.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination with a name plate, of a cup shaped member having its bottom secured to the name plate within the edges of the latter, the annular wall of the cup shaped member being throughout its height substantially perpendicular to the rear face of the name plate and lying within the edges of the name plate, so that the name plate projects beyond the wall to provide an abutting surface, and a sheet metal part to which the name plate is secured having an opening and also a flat wall about the opening with which the projecting portion of the name plate engages, the opening having projected about it an annular flange, the inner wall of which flares slightly adjacent the flat surface on the sheet metal member and the inner wall of the flange beyond said flaring portion being perpendicular to the flat sur face of the sheet metal member about the opening and being engaged by the external surface of the annular flange of the cup shaped member, the diameter of the internal surface of the annular flange being slightly less than the diameter of the external sur face of the P p member as t e li ameter of the flaring portion of the internal Wall of the flange on the sheet metal memher being slightly greater than the external diameter of the flange of the cup shaped 1' member, and the flanges on the sheet metal edge is compressed by the flaring portion of said opening in order that the flange of the cup shaped member may enter the flange of the sheet metal member and, when the name plateabout the cup shaped mem ber abuts the flat portion about the opening in the sheet metal member, the flange of the cup shaped memberwill lie in the flange of the sheet metal member thus slightly expanding the latter and causing one flange to be in a condition of compression and the otherv in a condition of expansion substantially throughout both flanges.
JOSEPH BOTT.
