Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY DISSTON 8v SONS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-SETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent 150,626, dated May 5, 187 4; application filed April 20, 1874.
To au whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN SMITH, of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have 'invented anlmproved Adjustable Saw-Set, of
which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to construct a substantial, adjustable, and easily manipulated saw-set by connecting together, in the manner illustrated in the accompanying draw ing, two arms, A and A', presenting jaws a a, the extent of opening of which can be regulated by a set-screw, b, as shown in the side view, Fig. 1, ofthe accompanying drawing. In Fig. 2 the two jaws are shown as detached from each other, the central pin, by which they are hinged together, having been removed. The two arms, where they are connected together, are halved, as shown'in Figs. 2 and 3, the rounded projection of one halt' fitting snugly in a recess of corresponding form in the other half, so that there may be at the joint an extended bearing-surface, which, when the nut of the bolt is tightened, insures a proper lateral steadiness for resisting the strain to'which the instrument is subjected. The jaws a a are of hardened steel, and are of a proper shape for applying to the tooth of the saw, the extent of opening between the jaws to suit the blade to which they are applied being determined by the above-mentioned setscrew b, which passes through a projection, e,
of one arm, and when the jaws are Aopened comes in contact with a projection, e', on the other'arm.
The two arms are of the same length, and are provided at the ends with suitable handles, which the operator grasps, one with his right hand and the other with his left, and manipulates the instrument in the following manner: Having adjusted the screw b so that the jaws when open will fit snugly but freely over the tooth of'the saw, the operator depresses one arm so as to bend the tooth in the direction desired, and then raising both arms relieves the instrument from the blade and adjusts it to the next tooth, which, by a depression of the other arm, is bent in a. direction contrary to that of the tooth last operated on. Thus tooth after tooth can be set with rapidity and ease.
I claim as my invention- A saw-set, composed of two arms, A and A', hinged together, and presenting jaws a a, the opening of which is determined by a set screw, b, alLsubstantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofl I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. JOHN SMITH. Witnesses:
