STRAPPING- APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, CHESTER M. MAG- CnnsNnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a handy apparatus which will very much facilitate the strapping of unwieldy packages or bundles such for example as a bundle of shingles. The steel strapping should pass around the middle of a bundle of this character in both directions, that is to say, at right angles. In both instances the operator should be able to handily draw his supply of strapping from the reel and have the middle portion of his package or bundle in line with the reel notwithstanding dimensions of the size of the packa e or bundle may differ from each other. 11 carrying out the invention I rov1de a holder which will properly receive and retain the bundle and Which can be handily manipulated by the operator so as to pos1t1on the bundle first one way and then the other for the passing around its middle portion of the strapping right-an ularly, the operator having both hands ree for manipulating the strapping and the seals and the stretching and sealing tools, and the construction of the holder and the mounting thereof being such as to provide for freely exposing the middle portion of the bundle whichever position it is occupying so that the strapping can be passed entirely around the same in contact therewith save for the interposition of a thin sustaining blade off 4.0 which the bundle can readily be slipped.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification Fig. l represents in side elevation an apparatus embodying my invention, a bundle of shingles being illustrated as having been strapped one Way; Fig. 2 shows the same apparatus in top plan view with the bundle still in the same position, dotted lines illustrating another position to which it may be swung 5 horizontally and from which dotted line position it may be swung back or laid down to be strapped the other way; Fig. 8 is a sectional plan View taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and omitting, the bundle;

but showing the holder and bundle differently positioned with the strapping around the bundle at right angles to that illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 5 shows the bundle and holder in plan view as positioned in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view taken substantially on line 66 of Fig. 4 omitting the bundle; and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary rear elevation illustrating the compound pivotal mounting of the holder. A. suitable framework is provided comprising feet 2, upper and lower horizontal beams 3 and 4, an upright 5 at one end and a pair of uprights 6 at the other end. At the upper part of the upright 5 a reel 7 is mounted from which the strapping 8 is drawn. The reel is located on the forward side of the upright 5 and the latter is bolted against the front side of the horizontal beams 3 and 4. On the rear sides of the latter at some distance from the upright 5 there are secured aligned bearings 9 for a vertical spindle 10 which rests upon a step 11 secured to the lower beam 4 (Fig. 7). The spindle has a horizontal arm 10 at its upperend and the holder for the bundle is carried upon this arm. This holder is in the form of a box corner having three sides 12, 13 and 14. Bearings 15 on the exterior of the side 14 adjacent its union with the other two sides, receive the said horizontal arm of the spindle and cotter pins and collars are applied as shown in Fig. 7 at one of said bearings so as to prevent the holder from moving along the horizontal arm of the spindle. It may turn thereon, swinging in vertical plane, and it may be swung around horizontally by virtue of the turning of the spindle in its bearings 9.
The form and dimensions of the holder are such as to provide for its receiving a bundle such as the illustrated bundle of shingles 20, the same being fitted against the three sides of the holder but the major portion of the bundle lying outside of the holder so that the middle portion of the bundle running both ways will be free for the carrying therearound of the strapping 8. Regarding first the condition illustrated by Figs. 1 to 3, the bundle may be said to stand upright, the shingles composing the same lying horizontally, and it will be observed that the holder is so positioned that its side 12 constitutes its bottom and the side 14 its back. The spindle arm 10 extends paral- 1 .lel with the horizontal beam 3 just rearward thereof and somewhat above it.
This brings the holder close to the frame uprights 6, the holder-side 14 constituting the back thereof being in vertical alignment with the beam 8 against the rear side of which the said uprights are bolted. As so positioned the holder-side 12 constituting the bottom thereof rests upon a shelf 16 mounted upon the beam 3 and against the upright 6 and sustained by knees 16 A slab 17 onthe left-half of this shelf as the parts are seen in Fig. 1 comes flush with the bottom 12 of the holder was to constitute in effect a continuation thereof upon which the bun:
dle may rest, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
There is set into this slab and secured thereto a thin metal blade 15 which projects far enough to cross the middle portion of the bundle and in fact extends pretty well under the same as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 so as to effectually prevent the bundle from tumbling out of the holder by reason of preponderance of weight beyond the same. It will be noted that the bundle is of rectangular dimensions top andbottom and that as positioned in Figs. 1 and 2 its longer dimension runs lengthwise the apparatus and in general alignment with the strapping reel and it should be observed that the lengthwise central portion of the bundle comes just outside the end and bottom walls 13 and 12 of the holder so that the strapping 8 can be freely passed around the bundle at its center in contact therewith unobstructed by any part of the holder. The strapping will pass under the blade 18 but the latter is thin and the strapping is stretched quite tightly and will have ample tension when slid from under the blade. The stretching of the strapping may be done by the use of a tool such as that shown in the Norton and MacKenzie Patent No. 1,242,026, and the sealing may be done by such a tool as that illustrated in the Norton and Fork Patent No. 1,322,723.
The strapping of the bundle one way around its middle having thus been accomplished (the strapping of course having been severed), the next thing is to put the bundle in position to be strapped around the middle the other way. This may be readily accomplished by first swinging the bundle and holder horizontally from the position illustrated in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 (full lines) to the dotted line position illustrated in Fig.
2 and in so doing the already applied strapping is slipped off the blade 18, the outline of which is such as to allow for the arcuate movement. The horizontal swing of the holder and bundle is through degrees so that they take up a position at right angles to the one previously occupied, and the smaller dimension of the rectangle is now aligned with the strapping reel, though the most desirable disposition of the bundle for its further strapping is not brought about by the horizontal swing alone. The bundle and holder are next laid back turning upon the spindle arm 10 as a pivot and so are brought to the position illustrated in Figs. 4: and 5. Here the holder-side 14 constitutes the bottom and the side 13 the back of the holder, and for the purpose of sustaining the bundle against tumbling out of the holder when so positioned a thin metal blade 19 is set into the side H- of the holder and projects therefrom pretty well a ross the overlying side of the bundle as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5. The 90 degrees horizontal swing of the holder brought it to a position somewhat forward of'tliat originally occupied and this, coupled with the dimensions of the bundle brings the center line of the latter (crosswise the rectangle) just outside of the blade 18 so that the strapping will not have to be again passed under that blade but will only pass under the blade 19. The laying back of the bundle intothe position illustrated in Fig. 4 involves a positioning of the holder with its side 14. now
to constitute the bottom, at a somewhat higher level than that which was occupied by the side 12 when it constituted the bottom of the holder,this owing to the location of the bearings 15 for the holder. The side 12, however, is considerably shorter than the side 14: and it will be recalled that in its original position the holder rested with its bottom 12 upon the lower level of the shelf 16 flush with the higher level supplied by the slab 17. In the changed position of the bundle and holder the longer side 11 of the latter may rest upon the slab 17 and upon the blade 18. It will be clear how. when the bundle and holder have assumed their new positions, the strapping can be passed around the middle of the bundle in contact therewith save for its passing below the blade'19, and can be effectively stretched and sealed and then, the bundle having been completely strapped, it can be removed from the holder. the new girdle of strapping slipping off of the said blade 19 The said uprights (i are carried high enough to support a tray 30 at a convenient height and location to accommodate the stretching and sealing tools and a supply of seals so that all will be handy to the operator when he has positioned the holder and bundle and is ready to proceed with the strap- 1. 2. Strapping apparatus comprising a three-sided holder adapted to receive and sustain a package or bundle leaving the central portion thereof free, blades to extend across such central portion on two different sides thereof so as to prevent the package or bundle from falling out by preponderance of weight beyond the holder, and a compound pivotal mounting for the holder whereby it may be swung both horizontally and vertically to right-angularly alternate in presenting the package or bundle to be strapped.
3. Strapping apparatus comprising a three-sided holder-adapted to receive and sustain a package or bundle leaving the central portion thereof free, a blade projecting from one side of the holder so as to extend across the central portion of the package or bundle, a base or frame piece to constitute a continuation of another side of the holder and having a blade to extend across the central portion of the package or bundle on a side thereof at right angles tothat across which the first mentioned blade extends, and a vertical spindle having a horizontal arm towhich the holder is pivoted.
4:. Strapping apparatus comprising a frame; a strapping reel vertically mounted thereon; a vertical spindle sustained in bearings on the frame a distance from the reel and to one side thereof and having a horizontal arm; a three-sided holder pivotally mounted upon said arm through engagement of the latter in bearings at one corner of the holder, and having a blade projecting from one side so as to extend across the central portion of the package or bundle on one of its sides; and a blade on the frame t extend across the central portion of the package or bundle on another of its sides; the arrangement being such that a package or bundle of rcctangular dimensions can be held upright in the holder with its central portion lengthwise the rectangle outside the holder and in line with the reel so that strapping drawn from the latter may be passed freely around such central portion and over the last mentioned blade, and the holder can thereafter be swung horizontally and vertically so as to lay the package or bundle down with the central portion thereof crosswise the rectangle and outside the holder in line with the reel for the passing of the strapping therearound and over the other blade.

Strapping apparatus comprising a holder adapted to receive and sustain a package or bundle leaving the central or tion thereof free, and a blade pro ecting from the side of the holder where the bundle overhangs so as to extend across the central portion thereof and revent the package or bundle from fal ing out by preponderance of weight beyond the holder, said blade being adapted to have the strapping embrace it without appreciable separation from the bundle and so without appreciable relaxation of tension in the strapping upon withdrawal of the blade from between the same and the bundle.

Strapping apparatus comprising a holder adapted to receive a package or bundle leaving the central portion thereof free, and blades projecting from different sides of the holder so as to extend across the central portion thereof and prevent the package or bundle from falling out by a preponderance of weight beyond the holder when resting upon either of said holdersides, each of said blades being adapted to have the strapping embrace it Without appreciable separation from the bundle and so without appreciable relaxation of tension in the strapping upon withdrawal of the blade from between the same and the bundle.
