DRIVING GLASSES.
Application filed heptcnlber cc, 1921. Serial No. 5%,888.
5 and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Driving Glasses, or which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device specially adapted for use by automobile drivers, and more particularly to what it term driving glasses: v
@ne of the main objects of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated which, when driving at night, will prevent the driver from being blinded by the glare of the headlights of an approaching automobile. A further object is to provide a device or the character stated'ot simple construction and operation which, when desired, may be utilized as glasses or goggles to protect the wearers eyes from the wind. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a top plan view or the device with the lenses in folded or in operative position.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device with the lenses in operative position,
Figure 8 is a front view with the lenses in open or operative position.
Figure 4 is a central longitudinal section through the device with the lenses closed.
Figure 5 is a section taken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The device includes eye or supporting frames l. which are formed of sheet metal or in any other suitable or preferred manner. Each of these frames is provided at its outer end with an outwardly projecting tab 2 to which is secured a temple bar 3 adapted to extend along the side of the wearer s head, this bar being provided at its rearward end it desired with a heel: for
engagement about the wearers earn Frames 1 are connected by a nose piece which is provided at each end with a furl: the arms 5 of which are secured to the respective frames in The lefthand frame as considered in Figure 33 is provided at its inner end Willi two spaced tabs 6 which-i are positioned adjacent to arms '5 of the TQIlL These tabs receive between them a lug 7 which re secured to a shield frame 8, this lug being hingedly secured by a pivot 9 between tabs The shield frame is adapted when the shield 10 carried by said frame is in folded or inoperative position, to fit snugly within frame 1 so as to be trictionally secured thereby, lug i fitting between tabs 6. A shield frame 11 is hingedly secured by a lug 12 to the outer end oi the righthand frame 1, lug l2 fitting between tabs 2 which are spaced apart for this purpose this lug being secured by a pin 13 which also serves to secure the righthand temple bar 3. A shield 14 similarto shield 10 is secured in frame ll,
and this frame is also adapted to hit snugly within the supporting -lrarne l to which it is connected in practice the shields l0 and M are made of glass; or any other suitable or preferred material oi amber or any other preferred or suitable color. Vfhen driving night the righthand shield as considered in the drawings is preferably'adjusted at an angle of approximately 45 to the adjacent supporting frame 1, the lefthand shield being adjusted suhstantially at right angles to the other supporting frame. With the shields in the positions illustrated and described, the light rays from the headlights of an approaching automobile will impinge upon the outer face of shield 14, the shield thus preventing the wearer from being blinded by the glare of the headlights; as previously stated, the shields 10 and 14- are of colored material so as to be translucent and act to ellectually shield the wearers'eyes from the glare of the headlights of an approaching automobile while permitting ready vision of the roadway. ln the day time the shield frames may be folded inwardly so as to lit snugly within frames 1 and be irictionally secured therehy, the device being then well adapted for use as goggles to protect the wearers eyes from the wind.
What 1 claim is l. Driving toggles including frames and lens sections hinged to said frames for hori: zontal swinging movement with respect thereto, corresponding sides of the respective lens sections being hinged to corresponding sides of the respective traine 2. Driving goggles including a pair of frames and a pair of lens sections hinged respectively to said frames for horizontal swinging movement with respect thereto, one of said lens sections being hinged to the ill outer side of its related frame and the other of said lens sections being hinged to the inner side of its related frame.
3. In adevice of the character described, an eye glass frame includin supporting frames and a member connecting the same, a shield supported from the outer end of one frame and ad'ustable to vary its an ular relation to sai frame, and a second shield supported from the inner end of the other frame and adjustable to vary its angular relation to said other frame.
4. In a device of the character described, an eye glass frame including supporting frames and a member connecting the same, a shield connected to the outer end of one of said frames and adjustable to vary its ond shield connected to the inner end ofthe other supporting frame and adjustable to vary its angular relation to said other frame. v
- 5. In a device of the character described, an eye glass frame including supporting frames and a member connecting the same, a shield frame pivotally secured to the outer end of one of the supporting frames so as to permit variation in its angular relation to the supporting frame, a shield frame pivoted to the inner end of the other supporting frame, and shield members carried by said shield frames.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. JOSEPH E. GEIGER.
