This present application is a division 01 ,111} application for Letters Patent filed'Decerm the Patent No.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. I. is; a view in plan fromabove, and. Fig. II is a view'in vertical and longitudinal section of the machine unit in whichmy present invention resides. I FigfIlIflis a view to], somewhat larger scale and fragmentary, showing in horizontal section a detail of this machine and illustrating its method of op- 1 eration. Fig. IV is a View in elevation of an initially formed loop, and this loop is the blank upon which the machine'of my present invention is adapted to operate. Fig. V shows in similar manner the reel part or element, after it has been shaped in the machine of my present invention. Fig. VI shows another reel part or element also shaped from such a loop or blank'as Fig. IV shows. And Fig. VII shows in perspective thecompleted reel, and in it will be recognized the component partsor ele. ments; there are two parts or elements such as Fig. V shows, and two such as Fig. VI 7 shows.
The machine of my present invention consists essentially of four blocks, 10, 11, 12, and 13, arranged approximately (with quali- 1,501,343 was grantedfJuly' fications presently to be dweltupon) in common plane, and arranged in pairs. The, blocks of each pair stand opposite one another, on axial lines at right angles one to the other. The opposite blocks 10 and 11, on the axial line (4-1), are stationary; the opposite blocks 12 and 13 reciprocate, approaching, overlapping, and receding again on the axial line 0(Z. The arrangement of these blocks on the horizontal table top 14, the reciprocation of blocks 12 and 13in a fi led. December 30, 19.22, Serial- No. 609,842 ,ratentfno, 1,501,343

blank to come to place'inclinedslightly fromgthe horizontal, and in such position that its opposite legs may be engaged by the two blocks 12 and 13, advancing ashas been explained, in different planes. 1
When in thecourse of operation the blocks 12 and 13 are in'remote position, shown in Fig I, a blank A, such as that. shown in Fig. IV may be applied, encircling both blocks 10, 11, its ends projecting beyond these blocks and its side members or legs. resting upon the widened bases of these blocks, and, in consequence of. the'minute.
shaping of the blocks, tipped somewhat from the horizontal. The blocks 12 and 13 close upon a blank so positioned in the machine. The dimensions and relative positions of the shaping parts'are so proportioned toythe size-of the blanlg and the power with which the blocks 12 and 13 are advanced issue-h thatthe blank engaged by all four blocks, cooperating in the manner sufficiently indicated brings the blank from the initial shape I erably not blank-forming faces but lnerely guiding faces, and that the curvature initially imposed upon the blank at its ends is the curvature which itcarries to the completion of the reel. By thus leavingclearance of the ends of the blank, when formed,
beyond the outer faces of blocks 10 and 11 (Figs. III) allowance is made for minor irregularities both in size of the blank and in the positioning of the blank in the machine.
While themachinevwhich I here show and describeforms blanks such as that shown in Fig. "IV to the particular shape shown in F ig V, othersuch blanks are formed to the particular shape shown in Fig. VI. Two
shaped blanks of each sort are then assembled and the reel is'articulated and formed into a unitary structure by increasing the bends in the members 0 at the pointsvindii cated at 0, Fig. IV, and forming these bends into the loops or eyes which in Fig. V bear the same reference letter 0.
Ido not dwell here upon the particular features of thereel which give it utility these are sufficiently considered in the specification of myip'atent first above mentioned.
" I I claim as my invention:
' 1. In a machi'ne for formingreels out of wire, a machine unit consisting of four blocks, two standing opposite one another in stationary positions and adapted to bring to position an endless hoop of wire applied to them, and two being: oppositely reciprocatory between the stationaryblocks in parallel planes angled with respect to the plane of a loop resting onthe stationary blocks, thereby shaping an applied loop to three-eyed.formation.
:2. In a machine for wire a machine unit consisting otfour blocks, two' standing opposite v one to another in stationary positions and two oppositely reciprocable between the two first named, the stationary blocksfirst named being provided with obliquelyextending seats whereby the opposite sides of an elongate my hand. v
