Be it known that` CARL E. KELLER, citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Locks, of which the following is a specication.-

This inventionrelates-to umbrella locks and has particular reference to the provision of means for effectivelylocking the ribs of an umbrella in lowered ,position alongside the umbrella stick whereby unauthorized use of the umbrella will be prevented.

`An object of the invention is to provide a device of the above kind embracing the desired qualities kof simplicity of construction, and etliciency in operation.

Another object ofthe invention is to pro-y vide a durable lock ofthe above kind capable of being easily and cheaply manufactured as well as readily placed into practical use.

Other objects will yappear as the ynature of the invention is better understood and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more-fully described, shown inthe ac-I companying drawings, andclaimedn In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the device consists of an inner disc embodying two half sections 5 and 6 hinged together as at 7 so that when closed, kthe free radial edges thereof will come flush together. Around the inner disc is a channel shaped outer or collar disc also `,made of two half sections 12 and 18 and which are also hinged together as at 14. Each side of each of the : sections 12 and 13 is hinged separately so that the innery disc maybe readily inserted in the outer disc composed of the sections 12 and 13. The outer periphery of the outer or collar discy is formed with under cut notches as at 15 to correspondwith they number of notches on the inner disc, and elongated slots `15 are provided through both sides yof the collar disc coincident with similar slots 16 provided through the inner dise. Pins 17 extend y, through aligned onesjof these slots, and have their' ends flattened to form yheads kwhich hold the two discs together.. y n y These disc ysections 6 and 13v are provided with cooperating holes 18'and`19 respectively, adapted `to receive the shackle of a small padlock when fthe discs yare positioned as shown4 in Figure 4 for locking them against relative turning kwith the notchesS closed by,the'overhanging'portions ofthe outer disc which are presented ,by the' under cutting of the notches of 'said outer disc. `rlheinnerldisc is provided withv a central opening as at 20 for reception of the umbrella stick'onto which the device may bef readily placed when the discs are swung to open position about the hinges 7 and 14, and the outer disc is also provided with a central opening as at 21 which is preferably larger than the opening 20 so as to form clearance for the rib 9 of the section 5.

Figure 4 shows the two discs assembled and the notches on the inner ydisc closed by the collar disc. This is accomplished by sliding or revolving the-collar dise around to the right on the inner disc. collar disc is slid around and the notches completely closed on the inner disc, the holes 18 and 19 of the discs align themselves so that a small padlock 22 may be rsnapped onto the discs with its shackle extending through the holes 18 and 19. Each rib of the umbrella may thus be firmly locked in a separate closed notch, and the balls on the inner ends of the ribs prevent the ribs 10U lhen the from being sprung and pulled out of the vlocking device.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a locking device which will discourage the petty theft of umbrellas and also will reduce the number of umbrellas lost by being taken by mistake. The device could be included in the equipment of an umbrella, in which case each disc could be made in one piece and put on the umbrella at the factory.

Minor changes may be made without departing romthe spirit and scopey of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. Means for locking the ribs of an umbrella comprising a collar composed of two discs relatively rotatably mounted to encircle the `stick of the umbrella, the inner disc having notches for the reception of the umbrella ribs, the outer disc having under cut notches whereby the notches of the inner disc will be closed when the discs are rotated relative to each other, and means for locking said discs against relative rotation when'the notches are' closed.

2. Means for locking the ribs of an innbrella comprising a collar composed of two discs relatively rotatably mounted to encircle the stick of an umbrella, the inner disc having notches for the reception of the umbrella ribs, the outer disc having under cut notches whereby the notches ofthe inner disc will be closed when the discs are rotated relative to each other, means for locking said discs against relative rotation when the notches are'closed, said discs each comprising half Vsections hingedly connected together for permitting the engagement of the device with the umbrella stick, and means for holding said discs in closed position.l

8. Means for locking the ribs of an unr brella comprising a collar composed of two discs relatively rotatably mounted to encircle the stick of the umbrella, the inner disc having notches for the reception of the umbrella ribs, the outer disc having Linder cut notches whereby the notches of the inner disc will be closed when the discs are rotated relative to each other, means for locking said discs against relative rotation when the notches are closed, said discs each comprising half sections hingedly connected together to permit the attachment thereof to the umbrella stick, means for holding said discs in closed positions, and means for limiting the relative movement of said discs.

5. A rib locking device for umbrellas comprising an inner disc adapted to encircle the stick of an umbrella and'provided with peripheral notches adapted for the reception of the ribs of the umbrella, and an outer disc revolubly carried by the inner disc having peripheral under cut notches whereby the rotation of the outer disc relative to the inner disc will close said notches of the inner disc, and means to lock the disc in rib engaging and retaining position against relative rotation.
