To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that T, EZRA Hora, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California,have invented new and useful Tinproven'ients in Coil-Winding Machines, of which the following is a specification. a
This invention relates to a device for winding coils and is especially adapted .for winding coils of metallic tubing.
Helical coils of drawn copper tubingare commonly usedfor water heaters, and .it is desirable to quickly and efficiently wind a tube into a coil of the desired pitch and diameter without crushing or mutilatingthe tube. This invention has for its primary object a provision for a machine which will accomplish the above mentioned objects. In addition to the broader object of this invention, there are certain details of design and structure, whereby a simple, durable, and efficient machine, easy of operation is obtained.
The nature and scope of the present invention will be apparent from the subjoined specification taken in connection with the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a fragment of av machine for winding a coil, only those portions on the machine essential to the present invention being shown; Fig. 2 is a section as seen on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the travelling collar.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the elements of the structure as illus trated herein are shown as forming a portion of a lathe structure, wherein 3 indicates the bed. Mounted upon the bed is a front bearing 1- carrying a shaft having secured thereto a cone pulley 5. Connected to the cone pulley so as to be driven thereby is a mandrel 6. The mandrel is cylindrical in form and has a semi-circular helical groove 7 formed therein. The diameter of the mandrel at the bottom of the groove is the internal diameter of the coil to be wound, the groove corresponding to the convolutions of the coil. The groove extends over the entire length of the mandrel. Secured to one end of the mandrel is a block 8 having a groove in its under surface complementary to the groove in the man- 'secured in position.

The trolley wheel is so disposed with relation to the lug 11 that it will register with the groove 7 on themandrel. A'leg 15 extends laterally from the collar and is diametrically opposite to the extension 12. -The leg is of sufficient length to ride in the well or way formed in the bed, as best illustrated in Fig. 2.
The stock to be wound comprising a tube indicated by 16 in Fig. 1, is clamped to the. mandrel at one end by means of the block 8. The collar 10 is disposed with the trolley wheel 14 over the tube. The mandrel .6 is then rotated so as to cause the collar to travel toward the free end. The collar is impelled to travel longitudinally of the mandrel with the trolley wheel always ,in registration with the groove and advancing toward the free end of the mandrel.
I I I The space f formed between the groove in the trolley The tube 16 is forced into the groove 7 by the trolley wheel. hen the collar has completed its travel over the mandrel, it disengages itself from the latter, whereupon rotation of the mandrel is stopped. The block 8 is then released from the tube and the adjacentends of the latter lifted by means of a tool. The mandrel is then rotated in the reverse direction so as to un screw the coil from the mandrel.
The simplicity of the machine and the ease of operation are apparent from the foregoing description.
What I claim is z 1. A coil winding machine comprising a rotatable mandrel having a helical groove in its surface, said mandrel having means to detachably secure thestock in said groove I at one end thereof, a travelling collar hav ing a complementary grooved member extending from one side thereof and registering with said helical groove, said collar embracing said mandrel and engaged With said groove, said mandrel forming a guide for said collar, and means to prevent rotation of said collar but permit longitudinal movement thereof.

A, coil winding machine comprising a rotatable mandrel having a helical groove in its surface, said mandrel having means to detachably secure the stock in said groove at one end thereof, a travelling collar having a grooved trolley Wheel mounted at one side thereof and registering With said helical groove, said collar embracing said mandrel and engaged with said groove and being of such Width that said mandrel. forms a guide therefor, and means to prevent rotationof said collar but permit longitudinal movement thereof.

A coil Winding machine comprising a rotatable mandrel having a helical groove in its surface, said mandrel having means to detachably secure the stock in said groove at one end thereof, a stationary'vvay parallel to the aXis of said mandrel, a travelling collar having a complementary grooved trolley Wheel mounted upon one side there} of, and registering With said helical groove, and a leg res-ting against'said Way Whereby to prevent rotation of said collar but permit longitudinal movement thereof.
5. A coil Winding machine comprising a rotatable mandrel having a helical groove in its surface, said mandrel having means to'detachably secure the stock in said groove at one end thereof, a stationary W 7 parallel to the axis of said mandrel, a travelling collar having a lug engaged in said groove, a complementary groove trolley Wheel mounted upon the side of said collar and registering with said helical groove, and a leg on said collar resting against said Way whereby to prevent rotation of said collar but permit longitudinal movement thereof.
