F. DQTCHER vRAILWAY SIGNAL TORPEDO Filed April 14 1924 Patented Aug. 12, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RAILWAY SIGNAL TORPEDU.
Application filed April 14, 1924. Serial No. 706,360.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK DUTGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Verlsailles Boro., McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and VState of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Signal Torpedoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. Y
This invention relates to improvements in railway signal torpedoes, and it particularly pertains to the construction of a rail engaging` strap and its clip.
The primary object of the present invention is the construction of a two-part spring rail engaging strap, so .that when it is slipped in the clip it is automatically locked therein.
The improvement more specifically relates to a clip having openings, and a two-part spring strap, each part provided with a projecting member adapted to interlock with the said clip.
Specifically the improvement consists of a clip having strap openings and a two-part strap, each part having its end doubled, and a spring struck up from the strap7 whereby when the doubled portion is pushed through the openings in operative position the said spring will engage a part of the clip and hold it in its position.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an enlarged cross sectional view of a torpedo which shows my improvement attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows another term of clip constructed to receive the improved strap.
Figure 4- is a plan view of another form of clip showing my improved two-part strap applied to it.
Many improvements have heretofore been made to facilitate the attachment of a strap to a torpedo clip, for the purpose of holding it in operative position. The present improvement is very effective in operation, cheaply constructed and quickly applied.
The improvement has been shown particularly with a circular torpedo, but I desire itl understood that the said improvement may be applied to any type of torpedo and to any type of clip without changing the invention.
In the drawings; 1 indicates a case circular in form, and in this form of case is shown a surrounding strengthening ring 2.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2 the clip 3 is united to the case by having the ring 2 extending below the case as shown at 4, the extending part of the ring holding the clip in position. This feature of the invention is the subject matter of a co-pending application bearing Serial Number 706,358 liled April 14th, 1924 in which it is claimed, and therefore no claim is made for it in this application. v
In the form of clip shown itis provided with a central opening 5 and two oppositely disposed openings 6, throughv which openings the upper ends of a two-part strap 7 passes.
The upper ends of the two parts of the strap are doubled as shown at 8 making a somewhat U-shape, the doubled part embracing the part 9 of `the clip.
The upper end of each part of the strap has struck outwardY from it the two lips or projections 10, which lips or projections engage the parts 9 of the clip and hold it from inward movement, whereas the doubled parts of the clips hold them against outward movement.
The form of clip here shown has its center bulged outward forming a fiat surrounding part 11 that is in engagement with the extended part 4 ot the ring 2. This construction is not at all necessary or essential to the operation of my present improvement.
I desire it understood that modifications ot the present improvement may be made so long as they are within the scope of the appended claims.
In Figure 3 another form of clip is shown in which its edges 12 are turned around the edge of the case 1 andthereby holding it in position thereon.
In Figure 4 another form of clip is shown elongated in shape, and attached in any manner to the case (not shown).
The two parts 7 of the strap are applied transverse the clip 3.
In each form of clip there is a central opening 5 and oppositely disposed openings 6, which are given the same designating numbers in all the ligures of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention what I desire to secure and claim by Letters Patent is: -f
1. A railway signal torpedo, comprising a case, a clip applied thereto and having a Strap opening, and a two-part strap applied through the said opening, one of the meinv bers having spring interlocking parts for holding thesaid straps in position on the clip.
2. A railway signal torpedo comprising a case, a clip connected to the case having strap openings, a two-part strap passing through said openings, each part of the strap Vhaving projecting spring members inter-i lockingWi-th the clip for holding it in positionthereon. Y y '3. A :railway signal torpedo comprising .a case, aclip attached to theV case, the clip having two sets vof openings, a two-part strap,V each end of the strap constructed to v.interlock .With that part Vof the clip locked between the said openings.
-4. A railvvay signal torpedo comprising a'oase, a'elip attached to the case said clip having three openings, a two-part strap passingthrough the said openings, each end of the strap constructed to vinterlock Withfthe clip Vbetween the said openings.
5, A railway vsignal torpedo comprising a case, a clip attached to the case, a clip having a central and two side openings, a two-part strap having its upper extremities doubled around the clip between the said openings, each part of the strap having a, projection engaging the outer side of the clip between the said openings.
6. A railway signal torpedo comprising aV case, a clip attached to the case, the clip having a central and two side openings forming a transverse bar, a two-part strap,
the upper end of each part of the stra) doubled around the said transverse exten ing portion of the clip7 each end of the strap having struck from it an outwardly extend FRANK DUTCHER.
