Description

E. 0. SCHARTAU.
Machines for Cutting Corks.
910.150,486, Patented May 5,1874.
I Y .n
wie A UNITED STATES PATENT @Errea EIBERT O. SGIIARTAU, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR CUTTING CORK.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,486, dated May 5, IS7/l; application llcd October 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot' this specification.
My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the selfsharpenin g device for the cylindrical knives in a cork-cutting machine for which Letters Iatent have recently been granted to me; and the nature of my invention consists, iirst, in a device for regulating the spring which carries the Whetstone; second, in a device for regulating the stroke of the cylindrical knife to conform with the positions of the whetstones; and, third, in a roller placed in a mortisc in the piston to facilitate the motion of the same.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fie. 2 a longitudinal section, of my self-sharpening device for cylindrical knives, embodying my present improvements.
A and B represent the two dies constructed Aand arranged with the various other parts of my machine in the same manner as described in my former case, and which, therefore, need no description here. a is the spring under the center die A, carrying the whetstone b. This spring a is, by a wire, m, 'connected with a screw, d, w-hich passes down through the center of the die A. By turning the screw d the wire .r is either wound up on, `or unwound from, the screw d, thereby moving the spring a in or out, and hence regula-ting the position of the whetstone. In the bed of the machine is made a radial slot in which is inserted a steel bar, C, the inner end of which is beveledy and pointed with tin, e. This bar is moved in or out and held at any point desired by a setscrew, f, and by its adjustment it serves to regulate the stroke of the cylindrical knife in order to cause it to conform with the position of the whetstoncs. .D represents the springpiston of my machine, in which I have. made a vertical mortise for the reception of a roller, IL. This roller serves to facilitate the motion of the piston by reducing the friction of'the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of spring a, screw d., and
wire a, all arranged in a machine for cutting cork, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The adjustable steel bar C, having its inner end beveled and pointed with tin, and arranged in connection with a cork-cutting machine, substantially as and for the purpose dcscribed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aftlx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EIBERT O. SGIIARTAU.
