Be it known that I, EDWARD d. BRosNAN,
' a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canajoharie, in the county of Montgomery and State of New' York, have invented certa-in newv and useful Improvements in Mountings for Cornmutator Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the reference numerals marked thereon, which form part of this specification. My present invention relates to a mounting for a commutator roller whereby the roller is yieldingly held outwardly in contacting position, the said invention being particularly adapted for commutator of a Ford automobile. i
The purpose of my invention is to provide a mounting for a commutator roller which is of improved form and which is very simple in constructioii, durable and efficient in operation and not liable to get out of order or have its parts broken. n
A further purpose is to provide a device of the character described which is formed of a minimum number of parts and which has its parts so formed that they may be readily taken apart and reeplaced by new ones if necessary. Y
A still further' purpose is to provide a device of the character described which is more eflicient in use in that the parts are so constructed as to maintain a necessary outward spring tension upon the commutator roller with regularity and permanence of action.
Further purposes and objects will appear from the specification and claims herein.

Referring tothe drawings in a more par= ticular description -`it will be seen that the device comprises a, hun` 1.0 adapted. to be mounted upon the usual eaxnshalft 1.1 and secured thereto as by pin 12. Upon this hub there are provided preferably by being formed integral therewith two spaced outwardly projecting ears 13 and 14 in the outer ends of which are provided aligned holes 15 to receive the pivot pin 16. This pivot pin projects at both ends laterally beyond the said ears 13 and 14. In each of these projecting ends there is provided a groove 17 preferably entirely encircling the pin and leaving a shoulder 18 on each end of said pin lbeyond said groove for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
There is provided a U-shaped arm 19 pivotally mounted near its inner end upon the pivot pin 1G and having its outer free ends provided with aligned holes 20 in which is mounted the shaft 21 of the commutator roller 22. The opposite ends of the roller shaft 21 project beyond the outer surface of the free ends of the arm 19. In each of said projecting ends of the said shaft there is provided a groove 23 close to the outer surface of the said arm and preferably entirely encircling the shaft. The commutator roller is rotatably mounted upon the shaft 21 although the shaft 21 may also and preferably will be able to rotate in the holes 2() of the arm 19.
In order to hold the commutator roller yieldingly outward from its hub 10 against the contact surfaces 24 there is provided a Ufshaped or looped spring 25 each arm of which is bent to about the form seen in Fig. 1. The looped portion 26 of the springl engages the right hand side of the ears 13 and 14 as the parts are seen in Fig. 1 and is kept from displacement by resting in a notch 27 formed near the base of said ears on the right hand side. Near the outer ends of its two parts the spring 25 engages the roller shaft 21 on its lower side as seen in Fig. 1 and is kept from displacement longitudinally of said shaft through the spring projectlng up into the grooves 23. Intermediate its length both parts of the spring engage the pivot pin 16 to the left as seen in Fig. l and on the portions of the pin outside the ears 13 and 14. To prevent the displacement of the spring longitudinally of this pin is the function of the groove 17 nea-r the ends of said pin.
It will be understood that the shape of the two parts of the spring 25 is such that when it is placed in the position indicated ingFig. 1 the sprinof is placed under con- Side-fable ansias and the aan" ends of the llO spring accordingly force the outer end of the arm 19 outward from the hub 10 so as to yieldingly force the roller 22 into the desired contact at all times with the contact surfaces 24. To prevent any tendency of the ends of the spring slipping off from the shaft 21 the extremities of the free ends of the spring are bent upwardly sharply so that as the arm 19 is forced inwardly slightly as during action or very decidedly as during placing'of the parts in position the ends of the spring may rfide along through the grooves 23 but the upturned extremities will Aprevent the spring slipping off from said shaft. It will be seen also that as the grooves 23 extend all the way round the ends of fthe roller shaft 21 said shaft may creep slightly in its bearings and so prevent any tendency of said shaft to wear upon its outer side. As the springis pressed into firm Contact with the roller shaft 21 at one end and with the ears 13 and 14k close to the hub at its other end it will be seen that said spring would also operate as a. good conductor of the electric current from the roller shaft to the hub 10.
Undue outward motion of the arm 19 when the mounting is outside of the commutator or when the commutator may be taken apart is prevented by stops 29 projecting outward from the arm 19 at its left hand end as seen in Fig. 1 to the left of the adjacent ears 18 and 14 as plainly seen in Figs. 1 and 2.
The arm 19 will preferably be formed as .a stamping from sheet metal of the desired thickness with its outer or right hand halves of each part offset as shown in Fig. 2 so that the outer ends of the arm will ust enclose a commutator roller of the ordinary thickness.
It will be seen that the device new described is very simple in construction, assembling and operation. It will be seen f3 that the device relies upon the strength of the two bent portions of the spring for the tension of the coinmutator roller and that the desired tension can be obtained with great nicety through the formation of the spring to the right shape and of the right strength.
It will be noted that the spring through its engagement with the groove 17 on the pivot pin 19 and through its engagement with the grooves 23 on the roller shaft 21 operates-to lock said pivot and shaft from undue longitudinal movement or from longitudinal displacement. At the saine time by removing the spring from the device either the pivot or shaft or both of them may be readily removed and replaced in an obvious manner.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A commutator roller mounting consisting of a hub adapted to be secured upon the cam shaft, an ear rigidly projecting therefrom, an arm pivotally mounted upon the outer end of said ear and having its outer end forked to receive therebetween the roller, a roller shaft mounted in the forked end of said arm with its ends projecting beyond said arm and a U-shaped bent spring having its inner end engaging the hub or the ears near the hub and having its outer ends engage the projecting ends of said shaft and tensioned to press the roller outwardly.
2. A commutator roller mounting consisting of a hub adapted to be secured upon the cam shaft, an ear rigidly projecting therefrom, an arm pivotally mounted upon the outer end of said ear and having its outer end forked to receive therebetween the roller, a roller shaft mounted in the forked end of said arm with its ends projecting beyond said arm and there provided with grooves and a U-shaped bent spring having its inner end engaging the hub or the ears near the hub and having its outer ends fitting into the grooves in the projecting ends of said shaft and tensioned to press the roller outwardly, the outer ends of said spring forming the means of detachably holding said shaft from longitudinal displacement but allowing rotation thereof.
3. A commutator roller mounting consisting of a hub adapted to be secured upon the cam shaft, an ear rigidly projecting therefrom, an arm pivotally mounted upon the outer end of said ear and having its outer end forked to receive therebetween the roller, a roller shaft mounted in the forked end of said arm with its ends projecting beyond said arm and there provided vwith grooves and a U-shaped bent spring having its inne-r end engaging the hub or the ears near the hub and having its outer ends fitting into the grooves in the projecting ends of said shaft and detachably holding said shaft from longitudinal displacement but allowing rotation thereof and operatively connected intermediate its ends to the outer end of said ear and tensioned to press the roller outwardly.
4. A eommutator roller mounting consisting of a hub adapted to be secured upon the cam shaft, a pair of ears rigidly projecting therefrom, an arm pivotally mounted between the outer ends of said ears and having its outer end forked to receive therebetween the roller, a roller shaft mounted in the forked end of said arm with its ends proj ecting beyond said arm and there provided with grooves and a U-shaped bent spring having its inner end engaging the hub or the ears near the hub and having its outer ends engage the grooves in the projecting ends of said shaft and tensioned to press the rollerV outwardly, the outer ends of said Spring forming the means for detaehably holding said shaft from longitudinal displacement but allowing rotation thereof.
5. A oommutator roller mounting consisting of a hub adapted to be secured upon the cam shaft, a pair of ears rigidly projecting therefrom, a pivot pin mounted in the ends of said ears and having its opposite ends project therebeyond there provided with grooves, an arm pivotally mounted between the outer ends of said ears on said pivot pin and having its outer end forked to reeeive therebetween the roller, a roller shaft mounted in the forked end of said arm with of said shaft and having its intermediate portions engaging the grooves in the proj eeting ends of said pivot pin, said spring being tensioned to press the outer end of said arm outwardly.
