Description

Patented Aug. 12, 1924.
UNITED STATES LOUIS E. TBACHSEL, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE KING- MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION 01? MISSOURI.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS E. TRACHSEL, acitizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storing Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to a hose storing device which is adapted to normally store hose within a housing to prevent deterioration by the elements.
For example, air hose used around motor vehicle service stations is liable to rapidly deteriorate as well as present an unsightly appearance if it is permitted to lie around upon the ground.
I have provided means whereby the hose will be normally retracted within the housing and supported upon a reel which will readily unwind to play out the hose when 1t is desired to inflate tires and as soon as the hose is released, the reel will be effective in causing the hose to be wound and retracted within the housing.
The invention contemplates certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, all of which will be apparent by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of a hose protector and reel constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective-view of the reel, showing the manner of attaching the hose to the axle thereof.
The reference numeral 1 designates a housing. which is shown as an ornamental hollow post, at the top of which may be su ported a lamp 2 of proper configuration, t e specific construction of the lamp forming no part of the present invention.
The hollow post or casing ma rest upon a suitable foundation 3 and one ose the operating parts of the storing mechanism.
STORING DEVICE.
( Application filed May 1, 1922. Serial No. 557,792.
Embedded in the foundation 3 is a pocket comprising a casting 4 extending sllghtly above the surface of the foundation and provided with edge flanges 5 and 6, upon which are mounted bearing standards 7 and 8, rov1ded w1th anti-friction bearings 9 an 10, in which are mounted the ends 11 and 12 of a horizontal shaft 13, the shaft being adapted to rotate about its axis in the bearings 9 and 10.
Integral with the shaft 13 is a drum 14, havlng parallel flanges 15 and 16 spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the diameter of the flexible connection which is adapted to be wound thereon, thereby forming a relatively narrow groove 17 to receive the chain or flexible connection 18, which passes around the pulley 19 mounted on a shaft 20 at the, upper portion of the post 1 and which is looped, as at 21, by fastening its end 22 to an anchor 23, the loop carrying a weight 24 having a pulley or idler 25, in the groove of which is received the loop portion of the flexible connection 18. The purpose of making the groove 17 relatively narrow or approximately the diameter of the flexible connection 18 which, in the present instance, is shown as a chain, is to wind the flexible connection in a series of coils, one upon the other so that the diameter of the wound portion of the chain will rapidly increase, that is, progressively increase with each complete wrap or winding, as will be fully explained hereinafter.
Fastened to the drum 14 is a hose drum consisting of two plates 26 and 27, which are bolted to the drum 14 by the bolts 28, the
plates 26 and 27 being spaced apart by the spacing ring 29, through which the bolts also pass, as will be clearly seen in Fig. 3. The plate 27 is provided with a segmental slot 30, through which the hose 31 projects as it is extended from the space between the plates :26 and 27, the slot permittin a bend on a relatively wide angle so that there will be no sharp turns in the hose which is fastened to the outstanding coupling 32, ca ped or screwed into the hollow portion 33 o the shaft 13.
The hollow end 3 is connected to a supply pipe 34 by a suitable connection, shown as a stufling box 35 and a flexible hose 36, the connection provided by the hose 36 being for the purpose of taking off the strain from the end 33 of the shaft 13 and to permit vibration without breaking the connections.
w thin it.
The space between the plates 26 and 27 will referably be approximately e ual to the diameter of the hose to be woun upon the hose reel so that the diameter of the wound coil will increase progressivelywith each turn of the shaft 13, and this Wlll be accomplished while the diameter of the coil' on the drum 14 is progressively decreasing, and vice versa, as will be explained hereinafter.
The weight 24 is heavy enough to cause the shaft 13 to normally have a windin tendency so that. the hose will be woun upon the hose reel. The weight 24 can a sectional weight having secured to its upper portion a lower portion 37 by the screw 38 so that the intermediate washers 39 can be reduced or multiplied in number to provide the proper balance.
The hose nozzle 40 will normally project through an opening 41 having anti-friction.
rollers 42 and 43 at its ed es.
The weight will norma y wind the hose I up n its reel by unwinding the chain 18. When it is desired to use the hose, the nozzle is grasped so that the hose can be paid out through the opening 41. This will cause the chain'l8 to wind upon the reel 14 while the hose is unwinding. Since the chain is arranged in a loop, a considerable length of chain may be confined within a relatively small space because the length-of chain can be multiplied within the stand by passing it over the pulley 19, about the weight pulley 25 and fastening it to the anchor 23. ,As the hose is pulled out and the chain is wound layer upon layer in the narrow slot 17, the periphery of the coil will be moving further and further from the center of the shaft 13 so that the leverage on the drum 14 will be increasing in proportion to the amount of hose being paid out. Therefore, when practically all ofthe hose has been paid out, the diameter of the chain coil will be at its maximum. This is an important feature because when a comparatively large part of the hose is paid out through the opening 41, it will require more energy to wind it on its reel than when only a small portion is paid out. Therefore, when the hose is practically oil the reel and the diameter of the chain coil about its pulley is greatest, it is obvious that the maximum leverage will be provided for the eatest amount of hose.
As the hose begins to wind and less effort is required to wind it on its drum, the diameter of the chain coil willbe progressively decreasing. Therefore, the hose will be wound upon 1ts reel at a substantially uniform rate of speed.
It is obvious, of course, that the hose is at all times supplied with air through the medium of the pipe 34, which may be connectedto a compressed air tank or 1n the case of liquids, to a li uid tank under pressure so that there will e an available supply at all times ready to discharge from the nozzle 40, the nozzle being of the usual type rovided witha valve which may readlly ischarge into the tire or into the vessel to receive the fluid supply.
By means of the-stuffing box 35 and its cpnnections, the shaft 13 may rotate without permittin the escape of air between the pipe .34 and t e hose. The construction of the shaft 13 and its drum '14 is preferably integral so that they may be cast together ;and thereby facilitate the assembl of the parts, the drum 14 affording an eflicient supporting bracket for the hose reel consisting of the plates 26 and 27.
It Wlll be a parent, of course, that the housing or ho low post 1 may partake of any appropriate construction but for the sake of appearances, it is recommended that the post e made ornamental.
Attention is also called to the fact that the hose 31 can pass through the slot 30 at an easy angle so that there will be no sharp bends in the hose which would tend to wear or cut or break the same during the operation of winding and unwinding 1t.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination a housing, a rotatable shaft having a ported chamber, means for supplying fluid to said chamber, a flexible hose having connection with said chamber, a hose drum'in fixed relation to and rotatable with said shaft and having a deep groove of a width substantially e ual to the diameter of the hose and in whic the hose is wound in single, superimposed convolutions, a second drum also fixed on the shaft and having a deep groove, a pulley rotatable in the housing, a flexible, looped connection having one end fixed to the housing and the other end fixed in the groove of the second drum, a pulley suspended in the loop of said connection, and a weight suspended from said ulley, the width of the flexible connection eing substantially equal to that of the drum to which it is connected, the connection and hose being wound reversely on their drums in single coils of proportionately increasing and decreasing diameters respectively for the purpose set forth. 2. In combination, a housing, arotatable shaft havin a ported chamber, means for supplying uid to said chamber, a drum rigid on said shaft and having a deep peripheral roove, a second drum comprismg inner am? outer plates and a spacing ring, the outer, plate having an arcuate slot, means extending through the plates and ring into the side of the first drum to attach the second drum rigidly to the first, a lpulley suspended in the housing, a flexible ooped connection run over said pulley and having its ends attached to the housing and the first named drum respectively, a weighted pulley suspended from the looped pa'it of said connection, a hose, having one end mounted on said shaft, communicating with 7 said ported chamber and run throu h the slot in said outer drum plate, the exible connections and hose being wound oppositely in single convolutions in their respective drums, substantially as and for thepurpose set forth.
I In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
