Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. F L001), a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Snohomish and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hose-Reels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to reels for hose which are provided with means whereby the hose may be automatically taken up or reeled in when it is released. a
The object of my invention is to provide hose reels with means whereby the hose will normally be wound upon the reel from which it may be drawn ofl when needed and upon which it will be automatically wound when released.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown my invention embodied in the construction which I now prefer to use and in the following specification I will describe such construction.v The special features which I believe to be novel and upon which I desire to securea patent will be defined by the claim.
Figure 1 is a side view of my device, part thereof showing the casing broken away and in section.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken upon the plane of the rotative axis of the reel.
I have designed my device particularly for handling the compressed a1r supply which is provided about garages and service stations for inflating tires. It may, however, be used to advantage for other pun-- poses. In such cases it would be a material advantage to have the hose promptly and properly wound upon a reel as soon as use thereof had ceased. It would preserve it from injury as well as adding to the conven ience of its use.
As a means for taking in and storing the hose I have provided a reel 1 which is rotatively mounted within a casing or cover 2 having a hose exit opening 20. While the inclosing casing is a desirable feature it is not essential to the operation of the really essential parts and therefore may be dispensed with if desired.
Secured to or formed as a part of the hose storing reel 1 is a drum 3 to which is secured vand upon which is wound a rope, chain, or other flexible conductor 4. This rope extends upward, over a guide pulley 40, suspended from the top of the casing, down; and about a second pulley 41 to which is secured a weight 5 and then to a connection of its end with the top of the casing at 42. The weight is thus enabled to turn the hose reel so as to wind up the hose and so as to yield to permit drawing the hose out.
The inner end of the hose is fastened to gets its supply of air as folchamber 10 formed in one end and closed a by a plug or cap, as 11. Through the axis of the reel 1, drum 3 and the shaft extension thereof, extends a bore in which is placed a non-rotative pipe 7, which projects from the casing and is connected with a source of supply of air under pressure in any manner which is convenient and feasible. The inner end of the pipe 7 has a head or flange which overlaps the end face of the chamber 10. Leakage is guarded against by the use of packing washers 71 beneath this head.
From the air distributing chamber 10 radially extends a pipe 8 which terminates at the bottom of the hose-receiving channel of the reel, where it receives the inner end of the hose. The hose is, therefore, so connected with the non-rotative pipe 7 that the air is continuously supplied thereto whatever amount of hose may be withdrawn from the reel. The hose-may be conveniently drawn out to its maximum extent and will be automatically wound up when released. It is thus always kept in good condition, injury by kinking and from being run over upon the ground is prevented and its life is thus extended.
I claim as my invention A hose reel comprising a casing having a hose exit opening, a hose reel mounted within said casing to deliver its hose to said opening, the hub of the hose reel having a distributing chamber and a pipe extending reel, a take-up rope secured to and winding thereto, a non-rotative pipe extending upon said take-up drum, a guide pulley for through the hub of the reel and entering the take-up drum secured to the upper part said distributing chamber, said latter pipe of the casing, a pulley and Weight secured 10 having a bearing flange engagingthe inner thereto supported in abight of the take-up end face of said distributing chamber, a rope, the endof the rope being secured to the small take-up drum at one side ofuthewhose upper part of the casin
