STEAM GENERATOR.
Application filed April 18, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be' it known that RICHARD H. LANSING, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicopee Falls, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Generators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in steam generators and its leading object is to provide a steam generator which will generate steam rapidly by means of heat generated electrically by iminersed electrical heaters.
' Another object of the invention is to provide an improved boiler construction, which will induce therein.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain new and useful constructions and arrangements of parts, clearly described the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through my improved steam generator.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view showing hot water connections, whereby the boiler may be utilized in a hot water heating system.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the practical embodiment of the invention 5 designates the wall of a boiler, which includes the base or bottom wall 6, and the top wall or dome 7 In the boiler an inverted conical member 8 is mounted, its lower and wider end or skirt 5,5 being spot welded or riveted directly to the base portion of the main wall 5. The small end of the conical member 8 provides a reduced steam outlet 9, which is located centrally over the bottom. This conical member thus provides a steam en- 'erating chamber 10, which is maintaine in normal communication with the water space surrounding the member 8, by means of small holes or openings 8 'formed in the wall of the member 8.
A feed water pipe 11 extends through the main wall 5 and through the conical wall 8 into the steam generating chamber 10.

By actual trial I have found that my improved steam generator will generate steam very rapidly.
The inner end of each electrical heater carries the resistance unit and this is raised to a high temperature by means of the energizing electrical current. The colder layers of water flow into contact with the electrical heaters, while the water contacting with the heaters after the average temperature of the contents of the boiler has been sufiiciently raised, is converted into steam which rises through the reduced upper en of the conical wall, thus inducing a rapid circulation.
In Fig. 1 I show a method of controlling the current to maintain any desired or predetermined steam pressure or temperature condition. A pressure device 20 communicates by means of the steam pipe 21 with the boiler and this device is provided with a driven rod 22 which controls the current through the magnetic switch 23, which operates the rheostat 24, which directly controls the strength of the current through the heaters, so that a constant steam pressure or temperature condition may be maintained.

A steam generator consisting of a boiler having a bottom and a conical member therein providing a steam generating chamber under the conical member and over the bottom, said member having normally open communication with the boiler, one end of the conical member providing an outlet, a feed Water connection leading to said steam generating chamber, and an electrical heater projecting into the steam generating chamber.

A steam generating device consisting of a boiler having a bottom and a steam generating chamber above the bottom and provided with an inverted conical wall having a reduced steam outlet on its upper end and inlet openings in its lower end, a feed water pipe connected with the steam geninvention I erating chamber, and a series of electrical resistance heaters extending into said bottom and into the steam generating chamber.
3. A steam generator boiler having a bottom wall, a series 0 resistance heaters projecting through the bottom wall, each of theheaters being provided with terminalssupported exteriorly of said bottom wall, said boiler having a water inlet located near saidheaters and a conical member arranged in said boiler and having its outer marginal edge portion secured to comprisin a I the boiler and a normally open outlet ex-- tending upwardly of the boiler, said member being provided with a series of openings having normally open communication with the interior of the boiler and through which the water may freely circulate, said water inlet extending through said wall to deliver the cold Water supply into the chamber established by said member within the boiler.
