PATENT or EL :eAso, TEXAS.
- I HUIDHDIFIER.
Application filed March 30, 1923. Serial 5N0. 628,878.
To all whom it mm. Be it known that I, ALLs'roN C. LADD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Humidifier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
- This invention has relation to humidifiers and has particular reference to a humidify- ,1 ing device forcontainers or receptacles for the purpose of maintaining the contents thereof in a properly moistened and fresh condition. i The invention primarily contemplates a humidifier which is especially designed for use in conjunction with the common forms of pocket size tobacco tins, although it is to beunderstood that the broad principle is subject to any other use of which it is ca.- pable.
. One of the principal objects ofthe inven tionis to produce as a new article of manufacture, an extremely slmple and inexpensive form-of humidifier WlllCll includes means for readily attaching and removing the same from the'lid or cover of an ordinary pocket size tobacco can whereby the moistcning of the absorbent-'material may be readily. accomplished. i
. As a further object the invention contemplates an improved humidifier in which the means for attaching the same to the lid or cover of a tobacco tin or containers for other contents requires no modification to the tin or containe With the above recited and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the right is'reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in whichthe claims are expressed.
In the drawin Figure 1 is a rout view of a tobacco tin with the cover or lid in open position and illustrating a humidifier constructed in accordance-with the invention in applied positi on thereon.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view with the cover in closed position.
.Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the humidifier removed.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, 10. designatesthe body of a container whichis here illustrated-as the ordinary pocket size tin for. tobacco, the same being provided with a cover or closure 11 having a flange 12 which fits over the upper open end of the container body and ashere illustrated has hinged connection therewith as at 13; Thehumidifier which constitutes the invention consists of a thin strip of material which is bent uponitself into substantially channel form to provide a bottom wall 15, a curved or arcuate side wall 16 and a right angularly disposed opposite side wall 17 which elements define an absorbentholding and embracing portion in which a suitable absorbent material 18 is placed. The
bottom wall 15 and side wall 16 are prefer-" ably perforated as at 19 to allow for the dis.- sipation of the moisture which is supplied to the absorbent material in order that the same may freely mix with the air within the container or receptacle for the purpose of humidifying the same. In order to provide means for associating the device with the flanged cover or lid 12 of the container or receptale body 10, the wall 17 is providedwith a U-shaped extension 20 preferably bent from the same strip of material with its inner wall 21 spaced from and parallel tothe wall 17 and its outer wall 22 disposed substantially parallel and spaced from the inner wall 21 whereby the walls of the U-shaped extension will constitute gripping jaws for receiving therebetween and friotionally clamping the flange 12 of the closure or cover 11, thus disposing the free ends of the walls 16 and 17 into substantial contact with the inner face of the cover or closure. Under this arrangement the humidifier is associated with the cover for movement therewith and when the same is'swung to its closed'position the upper free edge of the open end of the container body will be snugly received in the groove 23 defined between the walls Y17 and 21. When the cover is opened, the fingers press the exposed wall 22 of the U-shaped extension against the free edge of the cover or lid, thus overcoming any tendency to .detach the moistener from the cover. When closed the humidifier in no way interferes with the contents of the container body as the same is of a size to snugly fit within the lid only and when the lid is open for discharging the contents, the humidifier is automatically moved out. of the users way with the cover i or lid, thereby ofi'ering no obstrnctionto the.
n It will be understood that the device'is readily and free nseor discharge of-the contents.
conveniently removable for the purpose of re-inoistening or applying the same to a new tin. It 'Will thus be seen that when applied to the ordinary pocket size tobacco tin, the same is converted into a hnmidor' which will lininidify' the air in the container and -inainiain the contents in amoistened condi tion as rapidly as it is I claim: 1. Asa new article of consumed.
manufacture,- a
.humidiiier for containers having a lid provided with a flange eiigageable over the'contaiiier body, said' humidifier constructed from alslieet ofmaterialbentupon itself to uent material and formed with a lid flange provide an embracing portion for illiflbSOl'bengaging portion, and perforations formed in the absorbent material embracing portion.
2. In a humidifying device for (Zoritainers of the type which are provided with a fla'nge'd lid fitting over the open end of the container body, said humidifying device comprising an'absorbent material, and means I for holding said" absorbent materialn en-i member ha'ving'a'channel shaped-portion for embracing and retainlng the absorbent ma t'erial, and means carriedby one of the side walls of the channel shaped portion for trio-f tionally einbracingthe flange, of the lid.
3.; In a lnimidifying 'deviceadapted for use in connection with containers of the type' which have a flanged cover fitting-over the open end of the container body, comprising. f'.
a sheet of material bent in channel form for *gageinent .With the. cover] consisting of a embracing and holding 'an absorbent ma- Y i'terial," one oftheside walls'o'f said channel portion having a, U-shaped extension at its ten'sion constituting means forfrictionally gripping theco'ver flange for detach'ably en gaging the device therewith.
