GRINDING MACHINE.
Application filedFebruary 10, 1923. Serial No. 618,423.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Redfield, in the county of Spink and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding Ma' chines, of which the following isaspeoification.
My invention relates to flour and feed grinding machines; and the object is to provide a simple machine which may be used to grind wheat into flour and which is also adapted to grind various food stuffs into feed and which is simple in construction and operation and whichcan be operated at small cost and with a small amount of labor. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention-will bemore particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
Fig. 1 is a ing machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the machine, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the hoppers omitted for clearness. Fig. 1 is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 5 is a view of the rocker shaft. Fig. 6 is a broken diagrammatic View, illustrating variations in the grinding devices.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
The machine is provided with two frame members A and B which are securely braced by rods 19 and nuts 21, the nuts 21 on the inside of the frame members serving to lock the frame members rigid. The machine is provided with a driving shaft 1 which is journaled in the frame members A and B and the shaft 1 is provided with a drive wheel 5 which is rigid therewith. The shaft 1 is secured in place by collars 14; An eccentric wheel 7 is rigid with the shaft 1. A rocker shaft 2 is journaled in adjustable bearings 8which are attached to the frame members A and B. The frame members should be slotted or the openings for the shaft 2 be elongated to permit vertical adjustment of shaft 2 for setting the grinding plate 3 at the required position for grinding different kinds of material. The bearings 8 may be supported by steel springs 30 so that in case ofa stone or'pebble or nail fall- I ver l'which has an A box 22 is bolted perspective ,view of the grinding in between the grinding plates, the lower plate will yield and not be broken. The springs 30 may be raised or lowered by thumb nuts 34. The grinding plate 3 is supported on and operated by a rocker shaft 2. The plate 3 has a shank or operating leopening' for the shaft 2. to the lower end of the shank 4 toengage an'eccentric' 7 The object of the eccentric 7 is to give an oscillating motion to the grinding plate 3. The shaft 1 is driven bya drive wheel 5 which may be driven by any suitable power. In order to permit a slight vertical motion to therocker. shaft 2, the journals of the shaft 2 should be slightly eccentric as shown in The machine is provided with a hopper 32 whichis stationarily attached to the sides of the frames. The hopper should be even with the top of the frame and should project to approximately one-half inch to the lower grinding plate 3. Feed gates 11 are provided for admitting material to the grinding plates 3 and 31. The gates are raised and lowered by rods 10 which are attached to the gates and project through angle irons 15 which are attached to the upper edges of the hopper. Thumb nuts 35 are screwed on the rods 10 above the angle irons 15 for regulating the height of the gates 11.
The upper grinding plates 31 may be hinged to the hopper members 32. Openings 13 may be made in the flanges of the grinding plates 31 for holding these grinding plates in line with the lower grinding plate 3. The plates 31 may be held down yieldingly by levers 26 which are provided with weights 27 slidably mounted thereon so that the levers 26 will have more or less power to bear on the plates 31 which may be adjustably mounted by means of the hinges. Gates or doors 16 are provided for convenience in inspecting or examining the condition of the grinding being done by the grinding plates. Hoppers 18 are provided forconducting the ground material below in place by springs 36 which are mounted on rods 37 which are sup orted in, brackets 38- Which are rigid with t e frame members A and B. The springs 36 bear against the plates 31 and against rigid collars 39 on. the rods 37. The rods 87 are provided With thumb nuts for regulating the tension of the springs 36.
What I claim, is,
1. A grinding machine comprising a frame, stationary plates and means for fixedly mounting Sflld. plates at diifer'ent ad justments on said frame, an oscillating grinding plate adapted to move close proximity to said stationary plates, and means for yieldingly holding said oscillating plate in such position and means for 0s cillatin'g said grinding plate laterally.
2, A grinding machine comprising a frame, stationary grinding plates mounted on said frame, an oscillating" grinding plate adapted to move in close proximity to. said stationary plates, and means for actuating said oscillating grinding plate consisting of a driving shaft journaled in said frame, an eccentric rigid with said shaft, a rocker shaft journaled on said frame, and a shank: carrying said oscillating plate and rigidly mounted on said rocker shaft, and engaging said eccentric loosely.
