To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, BENJAMIN Harman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spray-Nozzles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spraying devices of the atomizertype in which the liquid to be sprayed is also placedunder pressure and forced thereby from'the receptacle to obtain a continuous spraying action irrespective of the direction in which the pump plunger which supplies the air pressure may be. moving. 7
The invention relates more particularly to the spray nozzle of the device, and its object is to provide a nozzle embodying certain novel and improved features of construction, and modes of operation which will be pointed out in the detailed description appearing hereinafter.

Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the nozzle body, the same having a base flange 6, and adjacent to the latter a nipple 7 for attachment to the receptacle containing the liquid to be sprayed. The nipple may be screw-threaded as shown, or it may be in the form of a plug if the device is to be attached to a bottle or similar container. One side of the nozzle body is formed with a disk-like enlargement 8 having an outstanding marginal flange 9, and at the center of said enlargement is a nipple 10. The other side of the nozzle body is formed with a nipple 11 which is screw threaded externally to receive and hold a nozzle cap 12.v
In the nozzle body 5 is imbedded a liquid delivery tube 13 which has one end passing through the nipple 7 to extend into the bottle or other receptacle containing the liquid to be sprayed. The other end of the tube 13 extends laterally and passes through the nipple 11, and from which latter it extends into the cap 12 and terminates to the rear of outlet orifice 14 thereof. The nozzle body will be a die-casting, the tube 13 being laid in the mold whilethe nozzle body is being cast.

The nozzle body 5 is also provided with a transverse ainpassageway 15 which opens at one end through the nipple 11 to discharge into the cap 12 and alongside the protruding discharge end of the tube 13 in The other end of the passageway opens through the nipple 10, and is here enlarged to receive a The nozzle longitudinal airpassageway 17 opening at one end through the nipple 7, and having its other end in communication with the passageway 15. At the junction of the passageways 15 and 17, the former is enlarged sufiiciently to form a chamber 18 containing a ball check valve 19. The inner end of the bushing 16 has a beveled seat 20 for the valve 19. The wall of the chamber 18 also has a rib 21-to prevent the valve 19 from taking a position closing the passagewayslii and 17.
if the device is to be operated by an airpump consisting of a cylinder and'a reciprocatory plunger Working in the latter, the pump cylinder will be attached to the flange 9. 'lf the deyice is tobe operated by a rubber bulb, the latter can be attached to thenipple 10. In either case air is forced through the bushing 16 to unseat the valve 19, and this air is discharged through the passageway 15 past the outlet end of the tube 13, so that the suction created at said end draws the liquid through the tube to discharge into the cap 12 from which latter it escapes through the orifice 14- in the form of a fine spray, the action being similar to an ordinary atomizer. Some of the air also escapes through the passageway 17 into the receptacle containing the liquid to be sprayed, and the pressure thus produced on the surface of the liquid tends to force the liquid out of the receptacle through the. tube 13, and in this way the spraying action is made continuous, and there is no interruption during the return or suction strokes of the pump. Referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the interior of the cap 12 tapers toward the orifice 141-, and as the discharge end of the tube 13 is centrally located in the cap in alinementwith the orifice 14:, the annular space around said tube end may be widened or contracted by advancing or backing the cap, which can be readily done as it is screwed on the nipple 11, and in this way the volume of air passing the outlet end of the tube can be increased or de molded from some acid-resisting metal or other material. The device is simple and compact in constructlon, and its use 1s not hmlted to any speclal design of liquid con tainer or receptacle, it being readily applicable to any ordinary can, bottle or other container, and capable of use in connection with any kind of spraying or atomizing apparatus. The preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed, but it will be understood thatvarious changes and modifications may be made without a departure from thespirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.

1. vAspray nozzle comprising a body having means at one end for attachment to aliquid receptacle, and provided at one side with a nipple and on the opposite side with means for attachment of a pump, said body also having an internal transverse air passageway the outlet end of which opens through the nipple and its inlet end opening through the side having thepump-attaching means, and also provided with a second air-passageway leading from the first-mentioned passageway and having its outlet end located at the end of the body having the receptacle-attaching means, a check valve at the junction of the passageways, the inlet end of the first-mentioned passageway having a seat to receive said valve, said passageway having an enlargement forming a chamber in which the check valve is located, a rib formed in said enlargement at the junction of said passageways to limit movement of said valve in the direction of said second passageway and the outlet of said first mentioned passageway from said enlargement, to prevent closing of the same, a liquid delivery tube passing through the body and having its inlet end extending from the aforesaid end thereof, and its outlet end projecting from the nipple, anda cap mounted on said nipple over the projecting outlet end of the tube, said cap havinga discharge orifice in line'with the outlet end of the tube. A spray-nozzle comprising a molded body having means atone end for attaclr ment to-a liquid receptacle, and provided at one sidewith a nipple, said body having a transverse air passageway extending through said nipple having its inlet in the opposite side of said body; a circumferential pump retaining flange surrounding said inlet, the body having an internal longitudinally disposed passageway leading into said trans verse assa ewa and havin its outlet 10- mote from said valve seat and in the path of a said valve to prevent the same'from moving to close said longitudinal passageway inlet and the outlet end of said enlargement, and a liquid delivery tube passing through said ing its inlet end extending from the aforementioned end of said body, and its outlet f end projecting from said nipple, and a cap mounted on said nipple over the projecting outlet end of said tube, said cap having a discharge orifice substantially concentric with the outlet of said tube.
