STRIP-SEALED CONTAINER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, FRANK A. AssMANN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strip-Sealed Containers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in containers, and more particularly to a container wherein one of the ends thereof is secured to the body portion of the container by means of a detachable sealing strip.
An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above character wherein the sealing strip may be tightly drawn about the flanges on the container body and the container end for sealing the container.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a' sectional view through a portion of the container having my improved sealing strip applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; and
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing the parts assembled for sealing.
The invention is directed broadly to a container preferably formed of metal which includes a cylindrical body portion and a closure for each end thereof. One of the container ends is secured to the body portion by a detachable retaining strip, while the other container end is secured to the body portion by double seaming. The retaining strip is preferably applied at the factory by the manufacturer of the container, and after the container has been filled, then the other end is applied and joined by a double seam to the container body by the packer.
The container body is provided with a horizontally extending flange and the container end which is secured thereto by the detachable retaining strip, also has a flange which is formed with an open curl or false -wire at its outer edge. The sealing strip extends underneath the flange on the body portion of the container and about the outer surface of the curled edge of the container end and terminates short of the flange on the container end.
' Referring more in detail to the drawings, ,1 have shown my improvement supplied to a container consisting of a body portion 1, one end of which is closed by a container end 2 which is rolled into a double seam with a flange on the body portion 1 as indicated at 3. The other end of the container is closed by a container end 4, and this container end is secured to the body portion by a detachable retaining strip 5. As above noted, the end 4 is first attached to the coning a vertical wall 7 which engages within the body portion of the container. At the upper edge of the wall 7 is a horizontally extending flange 8. which is rolled into a curl or false wire 9. This may be closed or slightly open. When said curled portion 9 is slightly open it forms an elastic curled portion which yields slightly when the sealing ring is applied and the elasticity of this curled portion aids in holding the parts. in tight sea-led contact. Between the flange 6 and the flange 8, a suitable packing 10 may be placed. The retaining strip is provided with a horizontal section 11 and a vertical section 12. The parts are assembled as shown in Fi 3, after which the vertical section 12 is ro led about the curl 9 to the position shown in Fig. 1. At this extreme curled position, the free edge 13 of the sealing strip is some distance from the upper face of the the flange 8 so that any variation of thickness in the metal may be readily taken care ofv by rolling the vertical part 12 to a greater or less extent about the curled portion 9 of the container end. This sealing ring 12 is split as indicated at 14, and at one end of the strip there is a projecting finger 15 which overlaps the other end of the stri This finger serves as a means for readi y lifting the up or portion of the strip and the removal 0 the strip so as to release the container end 4. The rolling of the strip about the curled surface 9 enables the two flanges to be very firmly gripped to ether and the limiting of the end 13 so t at it does not contact with the surface of the flange 8 insures, as above noted, that said vertical portion 12 of the retaining strip may be rolled a suflicient distance to bring about a tight joint. Instead of rolling the vertical wall 12 about this curled edge of the container end, from certain aspects of the invention the sealing ring may be formed with the curled section, then applied to the container end, and the part 11 of the retaining ring rolled underneath the flange 6. In either instance, the drawing ofthe retaining ring around the curved surface is what insures a tight joint being formed.
It is obvious that other forms of packing may be used for sealing the joint, and that in place of a packing ring a sealing material may be placed either on the flange of the container body or the flange of the container end, or, if desired, the sealing material? may be placed on the sealing strip itse It is also obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, as set forth in the ap ended claim.
Havin thus escribed the invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A container comprising a body portion having a flange extending outwardly therefrom, a container and for closing one end of the body portion, said container end having a flan e parallel with the flange on the body portlon, the outer edge of said flange on the container end being rolled in a curl, the upper surface of which is continuously curved from the outer portion thereof to the extreme inner portion thereof, and a split metal sealing strip adapted to engage the under surface of the flange on the container body, to extend across the edge of the flange on said container body and about the curled curved edge of the container end, the inner edge of said sealing strip being curved to conform to the curled edge of the container end and terminating short of the outer surface of the flange on the container end, whereb the drawing of the sealing strip about t e curved surface of the curled edge of the container end will draw the container end into tight sealing contact with the can body, the inner edge of the curled portion of the container end terminatlng short of the flange on the end, whereby a hollow curl is formed giving an elasticity to the curled edge. which aids in holding the parts in sealed contact when the sealing ring is drawn about the same.
