HARRIET CRANE BRYANT', 0F POTSDAM, NEW YORK.
CARD-TABLE covEn.
Application filed .Tune 1, 1922. Serial No. 565,152.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARnm'r CRANE BRY- ANT a citizen of the United States, residing in Igotsdam, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card- Table Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and concise description.
My invention relates to table covers, and more particularly to table covers suitable for use in playing card games of various kinds.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawing forming a part. of this specication, and in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures. l t
Figure 1 is a plan View showing my imf proved table cover, as it appears when resting upon a table, certain parts of the cover being broken away.
Figure 2 is a side elevation, showing the table cover and a portion of a table supportin the same.
igure 3 is another side elevation, showing a portion of the cover differing from tharh appearing in Figure 2. U
Figure 4 is a plan View of the entire table cover, showing the same as spread out flat from edge to edge.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5- -5 of Figure 4, looking in the direction indlcated by the arrows.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 4, looking the direction indicated by the arrows.
The main body of the table cover is shown at a, and is rovided with pendant edge portions b, c,` and e, each carrying a ba-gr f, and this bag having a side pocket g. he form of the bag g may be provided as a housing for a pencil, fountain pen, or the like.
The various ed e portions b, d, d and e, are provided wit buttons c and buttonholes Z, so varranged that the edge portions c may be secured together end to end when the table cover is resting upon a table, so that the ed e portions d hang downwardly, as indicate in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive.
In forming each edge portion c, d, e and f, the material of the table cover is bent back and forth upon itself, as shown at fm and ln. in Figures 5 and 6. By this arrangement, the entire table cover, except the pocket 7, is made in a single integral piece.
The main body portion a is provided with four sets of pockets, each set being numbered 1. to 8 inclusive, and each of the edge portions b, c, Z- and e is provided with a set of pockets numbered 9 to 16 inclusive. Thus each edge portion b, c, Z and c, with its eight pockets, mates a corresponding portion of the main body of the cover; that is to say the eight pockets carried by the adjacent portion of the main body a. Each pocket is adapted for holding a hand of cards. I-Ienoe, the main body of the table cover may carry thirty-two hands of cards, and the four edge portions b, c, d may carry thirty-two more hands. Stating this another wa`y, each por- ,caoss tion of the table cover representing the edge of the table is adapted for carrying sixteen hands of cards. These cards are shuiled and dealt, preferably before the playing begins.
In some very popular games of cards it is necessary to make a distinction between original hands of cardsand so-called duplicate hands thereof. In my improved table cover I indicate the dealers of the original hands by the legend O, and dealers of duplicate hands by the legend D. As may be seen from Figure 4, for instance, the side of the table corresponding to the bottom o-f the figure displays the legend O in such position as to indicate that the pockets 1, 9, 5` and 13 are for the use of original dealers. Similarly the side of the table of the left of the figure so displays the legend 0 as to indicate that the pockets 2, 10, 6 and 14 are for the use of original dealers. At the top of lFigure 4 the pockets used by the original dealers are those indicated by the legend O and the numbers 3, 11, 7 and 15, and at the side of the table corresponding'to the right hand side of the figure the legends indicate that the pocket used by rtlie original dealers are those numbered 4, 12, 8 and 15.
The various positions of the legend D indicate the position of the pockets used by the dealers of duplicate hands. Thus according to Figure 4 the pockets 1, 9, 3 and 13 at the left hand side of the table are indicated as in use by duplicate dealers. The pockets 2, 10, Gand 14, atl the side of the tabley represented by the top of the iigure, are similarly used by duplicate dealers. Following the system further, it will be noted that in this igure and thei pockets 4, 16, 8 and 16 at the side of the table corresponding to the bottoni of the figure are indicated as used by duplicate dealers.
In playing a so-called auction game, as each original hand is played the cards are passed by each player to the next successive player at the left, and by this player deposited in the ocket bearing the same number as the poc et from which the pack was drawn. That is, the cards taken from pocket l are passed to the left and placed in pocket 1. It follows that when sixteen hands have been each originally played and passed to the left, they are then in front of players of the duplicates. Thus lthe game progresses smoothly, and Without any of the usual complications attendant upon the use of separate trays, plates or boxes ordinarily employed.
The ,pockets f may be used to hold score cards and any number of small accessories, in addition to counters or the like.
My improved table cover may .be made of any durable and flexible material suitable for the purpose: such as oilcloth, leather, satin, cretonne, bleached or unbleached cotton or linen, or even such material as-leatheroid, paper or the like.
The players may be as many or as few as can play at any game of cards. If all of the pockets be filled with cards and only a few hands are to be played, the players simply leave undisturbed those pockets containing the cards which are not brought directly into use.
I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown, as variations may be made therein without departing from my invention which is commensurate with my claims.
Hiaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
l. A table cover comprising a main body portion of flexible material, and a plurality of edge portions pendent therefrom and also made of flexible material, said main body portion being provided with a number of pockets for carrying hands of cards or the like, and further provided with indicating marks disposed adjacent said edge portions, each of said pendent edge portions being provided with pockets for carrying hands of cards or the like, the pockets carried by said edge portions being paired in mating relation to the pockets carried by the main body portion, said pendant edge portions bcing further provided with indicating marks relating to the indicating marks of said main bod portion.
2. A ta le covercomprising a main body portion and-a number of edge portionsintegral with said main body portion, said main body portion and its said edgefportions being made of flexible material and thus adapted for service as a table cloth, said edge portions being provided with means whereby they may be detachably secured together end to end and being provided with indicating marks and with pockets, said main body portion being provided with indicating marks relating to said indicating marks of said edge portions and further provided with pockets paired in mating relation to said pockets of said edge portions.
3. A table cover comprising a body portion provided with pockets and having a number of pendant edge portions also provided with pockets, said main body portion being further provided with indicating marks disposed adjacent said edge portions, and said edge portions being provided with indicating marks mating said indicating marks of said body portion, for showing a relation between some of the pockets carried by said body portion and others of the pockets carried by said pendant edge portions.
4. A table cover comprising a main body portion and a number of pendant edge portions, said body portion and said pendant edge portions being formed of flexible ma; terial and thus adapted to cover a table after the manner of a table cloth, said main body portion and said edge portions being provided with pockets, each of said pendant edge portions being provided with a number of legends, and said body portion being provided with a number of legends related to the legends carried by each pendant edge portion, said legends of each of said edge portion indicating a relation between some pockets carried by that edge portion and other pockets carried by said main body portion.
