E T E S PATENT OFFICE.
LAURENCE ROBERT HARDY, OF ALNWICK, ENGLAND, ASSIG-NOR TO HARDY BROTHERS (ALNWICK) LIMITED, OF ALNWIOK, ENGLAND.
PORTABLE STOOL.
Application filed May 1, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURENCE ROBERT HARDY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at London and North British Works, Alnwick, in the county of Northumberland, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Stools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable stools of the character commonly employed in shooting, angling and other pastimes or pur suits, and has for its objects to provide a 'stool better adapted than those commonly in use for supporting the weight, or the greater portion of the weight, of the user, to remain in position when unoccupied and generally to render the device more convenient and serviceable.
As hitherto constructed, such stools usually consist in a short pointed staff or butt, to the upper extremity of which is attached, by means of a horizontal pivot, a seat, capable of being locked in a vertical position when the staff is employed as a walking stick, or of being turned and locked in a horizontal position when the contrivance is required for use as a seat. lVit-h a seat of this charactor, a considerable portion of the weight of the occupant is necessarily borne by the 'users legs, the device serving rather as a prop than as an actual seat; and when unoccupied, cannot be relied upon to retain an upright position.
A portable stool constructed according to the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, whereof Fig. 1 shows the device in its extended or operative condition and Fig. 2 in its folded state. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line XX in Fig. 1; whilst Fig. 4 is a vertical section on an enlarged scale;
The seat a, which is capable of rotation when in use, is mounted upon a seat-pillar 6 Serial No. 557,718.
which extends downwardly through a crown c to which latter are pivotally connected supporting legs cl, preferably three in number. The crown 0 is furnished with a releasable gripping device adapted to engage the seat pillar b and to enable the height of the seat to be Varied; such gripping device consisting, for example, of a split collar 6 fur nished with a pinching screw e provided with a hand-lever e for operating the same. The heads 05 of the pivoted legs d are formed with inwardly projecting fiat-faced elbows 6Z2, and the crown c with a milledheaded nut f, so that, when the latteris screwed down upon the elbows d the legs are maintained intheir spread positions. To render the seat rotatable in the fixed seatpillar, the upper extremity of the latter is formed as a socket h adapted for the reception of a short stem 2' which depends from the seat. This stem is formed with a groove j into which projects the ends of a stud j lVhen employed as a walking stick, the bipart seat a is folded to occupy a vertical position; whilst the legs d, having been released from the screw-nut f, fold together and may be secured by means of a strap or chain 9.
I claim A portable stool comprising a crown, a plurality of legs pivotally connected to the crown and each having a flat shoulder on its upper extremity, a split collar carried by the crown and having a threaded portion above said legs, a seat pillar slidably fitted through the split collar, contracting means for the split collar to bind the same on the pillar, and a retaining nut 011 said threaded portion of the split collar and adapted to be turned down against said flat shoulders on the upper extremities of the legs for holding said legs in open position.
LAURENCE ROBERT HARDY.
