M. BRECKER COMBINED BUST AND, SKIRT FORM Filed July 18. 192] INVENTOR. .Max fire'cer BY M. $6? j ATT NE Patented July 22, 1924.
UNKTED STATES MAX BRECKER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINED BUST AND SKIRT FORT/l:-
' Application filed July 18,
T all who-m z'zfmag concern: I
Be it known that 1, MAX BREGKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New' York city, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Bust and Skirt Form, of which the following is a specification. I y
This invention is a combined bust and skirt form, and, speaking generally, the ob ject of the invention is an article of the class specified which is adapted to be used either as a bust form or skirt form or both forms combined at the same time.
Both skirt forms and bust forms have long been known; e. g., it has been the practice to build bust forms with depending skirt portions, usually constructed from metallic ribs and hoops, so as to provide a full length form over which a dress, may be fitted. It has also beencoinmon to manufacture bust forms without the depending skirt portion, which bust forms are commonly used, more particularly, for demonstration purposes, when supported upon counters, tables, shelves, etc. It has been the practice to support the full length forms on standards, but the bust forms have usually depended for support upon some extraneous article of furniture. so far as I am aware, has there been suggested a full length figure which was so or ganized or constructed as to be capable of use as a bust form, without dismantling the same for the purpose of supporting the bust and skirt portions. The present invention, in its preferred form, embodies a bust form so constructed that when used as such, it may readily be set in upright position on any extraneous support and such bust form, has, associated therewith, a skirt portion preferably of fabric, with which it cooperates, and distending means for normally imparting the desired shape to the skirt portion. In practice, the upper part of the skirt portion is shaped to the desired contour by permanently securing it to the lower portion of the bust form, while the desired shape is imparted to the lower end of the skirt portion by a distending member associated therewith, so that the skirt portion hangs freely from the base of the bust portion when the latter is supported in upright position by a suitable standard assosiated therewith. The parts are so ar- In no case, I

ranged and proportioned, however, that when desired, the skirt portion can be collapsed and liftedinto the interior of the bust portion and maintained in this concealed position by means of the distending member refered to. Thereafter, the bust portion, with the skirt portion housed there, in, may be readily. removed from the stand ard and set on a table or other form of sup port. Theparts may be readily collapsed for shipment by collapsing the supporting standard within the bust form to insure compactness of construction and enable it to be contained withina relatively small crate. Features of the invention other than those specified will be apparent fromthe following detailed description and appended claim, read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. 7 The accompanying drawings, illustrate one practical embodiment of the invention, but the construction therein shown, is to be un derstood as illustrative, only, and not as defining the limits of the invention. I
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the form of the present invention which is a combined bust and skirt form. In this figure the bust and skirt portions" are shown in central section in the interest of clearness; Figure 2 shows the parts collapsed and a bust form; and
F1gure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, showing the lower edge of the skirt Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bust portion of the form which may be constructed of any suitable material and may be economically manufactured of papier-mach. The bust form 1 is shaped to the human figure and is made hollow in the in terest of lightness. The top of the portion 1. is closed by a block 2 over which an ornamental cover plate 3 is positioned, and a partition 4 is positioned within the portion 1, adjacent the lower edge thereof.
The block 2 and plate 3 are perforated and through these perforations passes a metallic rod 5, the upper portion of which is attached thereto. The lower end of the rod is adapted to be received within the hollow ortion 6 of a standard having a suitable base 7, and thumb screws 8 and 9 are adapted to bind the rod at any desired elevation. A nut 10 is screwed upon the upper cluding the inadvertent lifting of the bust portion and to serve as a handle when moving the form from place to place;
Secured to the lower edge of the bust portion 1, is the upper edge or sheath l2 which constitutes the skirt portion of the form. The sheath 12'is provided at lts lower edge with a hem 13 in which is housed an oval ring 14, which servesto' impart the desired shape to the lower edge of the skirt; The
ring 14 is adapted to be properly centered with respect to the standard 6,'by spacing arms securedat opposite ends to the ring ll-and' shaped intermediate their endsinto semi-circular portions, adapted" to collectivelyembrace the hollow portion 6' of the standard.
VV-hen the construction l is to be employed as "a full length form, themembers are "associated 'in the manner described and as clearly shown inFig. 1, from which itwillbe seen that the form is'car'riedin upright POSltlOli by the standard which forms itssupport.
If it is now desired to-use-the form purely as a bust form and supportthe' same one counter or otherwise than by the standard shown in Fig. 1, the knob l linay be screwed ofFof-"the'rod 5 Thereafter the'skirtportion 12 mayjbe collapsed-within the-hollow:
bust portion, anddnto' the: position shown in Figure 2, the ring 14 beingof suchsize a to Wedge firmly within the bustportion and 1' re maintain" the partsin this: position. bust portion, with-theskirfi portion in concealed position, may; then be 'set upright on atable or other form of sup'p'or't'l6.
form without necessarily removing it from the standard,- asfo'r packlng fOISli1pHI61 1t or storage, the thumb screws S'a'ndQ may be; snnply loosened and the rod 5 allowed to drop, after the skirt portion hasz'been collapsed, whereupon the parts will partake of therelative positions shown in dotted lines in Figure 2. Thethumb screw 9 may then be tightenedto hold the parts'in. this position and if desired the device may be lifted about" by" the knob 11. 7
Many advantages flow from the specific structure described, among which may be enumerated, economy of manufacture, sightliness, compactness for shipping and storing, lightness and durability.
I am aware that in articles of the general class under consideration, it has been common to associate with the bust portion a collapsible skirt portion composed of metallic parts, but in dismantling such articles itis necessary to draw the metallic parts upwardly over tlre'bust' portion, and this operation not infrequently results in tearing the jersey or similar cloth forming theexterior' of thebust portion.
It Will be understood that changes {may be made inthe specific structure described,
such as the substitution of equivalents, or by using certainparts of the-device in'stead'of the entlr'e structure, withoutdeparting from thespirit'or substanceo'f' 'th'e invention, the
scope of which is commensurate with the appended claim.-
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim'as"newanddesire to secure by Letters Patent is Acombined bust and skirt form-embodyinga-rigid permanently shaped bust portion provided with an open bottomchamber at its base, a skirt portion permanently secured to the bust portion and adapted to normally hangtherefrom, said skirt portion being a fabric whereby it may be'raised and collapsed into concealed position within the chamber; inthe'bust' portion, and a distendlo'wer'edgef of" the skirt portion for main-' p I V I tainingfsaid portion in'properfshape' when If'it 1s des'l'redto merely lower the bust theskirt portion is loweredand adapted 'to be forced" into the chamber in thebustf p0r-- tion wl'i'e'nthe skirt portion is collapsed with said chamber, for maintaining'theskirt portion in collapsed position" within the chamber 'ofthe bust portion when the skirt'portion is raised.-
In testimony whereof- I' have signed the foregoing specification.
