SASH FASTENER.
Application filed January 31, 1.5122.Y Serial No. 582,967.
To all whom t may concern:
Be itknownthat I, SAMUEL SEGAL, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices adapted to be screwed or otherwise fastened to one member and containing means adapted to engage another member whereby said members may be held against movement.
In one of its applications the invention relates more specifically to a window sash anti-rattler or fastener by means of which a window may be tightly held against movement. The device may be fastened to a slidable window sash and tightened against a second window sash or against the window frame to loell the window sash in any position, either open, closed or partially closed.
The object of the invention is the production of a device of the above character which shall be simple in construction and which shall effectively and easily perform its tightening orfastening function.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention willappear from the accompanying description, the invention conisting in the novel parts and combinations thereof hereinafter more particularly described and then specilied in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing:

Fig. 14 is a front elevation ofthe clutch member ofV this modification. Y
Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing:
1 indicates an upper window sash and 2 a lower window sash. the window pane of the upper sash being indicated at 3. Said sashes are slidable towards and away from each other in suitable guideways of a window frame 4.
The base of my improved sash fastener is indicated at 5 and is provided with openings 6 therein adapted to receive screws 7 whereby the fastener may be secured to the top rail of one of the sashes as for instance the sash 2. Extending upwardly from said base v5 and preferably integral therewith is a post comprising two members 8 having a space therebetween, said post members also having screw-threaded annular openings 9 extending therethrough in alignment. 10 indicates a clutch member provided with a pin 11 slidably extending within a bore 12 in the base 5, said clutchk member being supported by the post members Sand being prevented from rotation by engagement of said pin with said bore. Said clutch member is f ico threaded through the openings 9 of the post members 8 and it is provided with a head 15 carrying a rubber tip 16 adapted to be pressed against and frictionally engage: the upper sash 1. The rear end of the shank of the bolt carries a knurled knob 17 for rotating the bolt. 18 indicates a compression spring carried by the pin 11, said spring engaging the base 5 and the clutch member 10. The actionV of said spring tends to prless the clutch member upwardly whereby the rec tangular shank of the bolt will enterl or be received by the rectangular portion of the slot 13 in the clutch member to securely lock said bolt against rotation as shown in Fig. 3.
'To release the clutch member 10 from its `locking engagement with the bolt it nis merely necessary to press the clutch member downwardly against the action of the'sp'ring 1'8 so that the shank of the bolt will extend loosely through the rounded portion'of the yslot 13 in the clutch member. The bolt-may then be rotated by means of the knu-r-led knob 17 to thread the same forwardly through the post members 8 or to retract-the same. When threaded forwardly thetip 16 will be pressed `against the upper sash 1 so that both sashes 1 and 2 will be prevented from rattling and will be securely fastened in any desired position. l/Vhen the bolt has been rotated the desired distance in either direction to fasten or unfasten the 'sashes, a releasing of the clutch member 10 will automatically lock lthe bolt against further rotation as theV clutch member will then be forced upwardly by the action of the spring 18 and the bolt will enter the rectangular portion of the slot '13 in the clutch member.
For assisting in the tightening operation of the bolt l have provided a wrench 19 provided with a slot 2O in the head thereof, said slot being similar in configuration to the slot 13 in the clutch Ymember 10, in that its upper side is rounded while its lower side is rectangular. `l\lorm`ally the wrench hangs on the shank of the bolt which passes loosely through the rounded portion ofthe slot 20 so that a manipulation of the bolt by means of the knurled knob -does not alter or interfere with the position of the wrench. k/Vhen it is desired to bring` the wrench into play it seized by its shank and pressed upwardly until the shank ofthe bolt is received by the rectangular portion of the slot 20. Rotation of the wrench'will then rotate the bolt7V as is obvious, and by means of said wrench the bolt may be tightened a considerably greater degree than if the knurled knob only we-re used for the tightening operation.
In the modification illustratedinfFigs. -6 and 6 Idispense witha--sprin'gfandprovide 'ther clutch Vmember -10 with a slot 13] the wall of. which has a configuration the re.- verse of thatof the slot 13 in thencl-utch member l0 ofthe preferred form, in that the lower portion of said slot- 13 is rounded while the upper portion is rectangular. Thus the clutch member becomes interlocked with the bolt by the actionk of gravity as the bolt is received Y by the rectangular portion of the slot 18. Before the bolt may be operated the clutch member must be lifted manually so that the bolt will extend loosely through the rounded portion ofthe slotl.
in Figs.V 7 and 8 the post 21 comprises a single member in contradistinctfon to the two-part member of the preferred form which post is preferably integral with a base 22. The clutch member of this inodication comprises an inverted U-shaped piece 2.3 having slots 24 similar -to the slot 13 of the clutch member 10. rEhe post-21 extends upwardly into the 'space intermediate tlie'arms of the clutch member as clearly shown in F ig. 7 and one of the armshas a pin 2e 'secured thereto or integral therewith 'which slidahly enters a bore 25 in the base 221.Y ifi spring 26 is carried by the pin 21 'and presses against the arm of the clutch member and against the base 22N The action of the device is prec'sely similar to theaction of the device of the preferred form of the invention. The clutch member 23 must be pressed downwardly against the action of the spring 24 before the bolt maybe operated. l/Vhen the clutch member is released it is pressed forwardly by 'the action of said spring and the rectangular portions of the slots 24- receive the rectangular Vshank of the bolt to lock the bolt against further knurled knob 31. The' main bolt is operated in the same manner as the bolt in the preferred form, the supplementalfbolt acting as additional fastening means which may bev operated independently of the operation of the main bolt. When the supplemental bolt is threaded forwardly through the main .1
bolt, the tip 30 thereof will press against the window sash 1 in an obvious :manner to provide additional fastening means for holdingthe sashes against movement. This supplemental bolt may be used in con-junction with all forms of the invention.
In the modification illustrated in Eiga 10 to. 141v inclusive,r the base is indicated atv and the two-part post formingda portion thereof at 33. The clutch member 13a isprovided with a slot 35 of a size permitting it to loosely receive the cylindrical screwthreaded shank of the bolt 36, said shank being provided with longitudinal grooves 37 therein as indicated. The clutchV member 34C is also provided with a projection 38 adapted to enter any of said grooves 37 to prevent rotation of the bolt. When it is desired to rotate the bolt the clutch member is pressed downwardly, as in the preferred form of the invention, against the action of the spring 39 to release the projection from its locking engagement with one of the grooves 37. The release of the clutch member automatically locks the bolt against fur ther movement, as is obvious, as the projection 38 will automatically enter one of said grooves 37 by the action of the spring. In this modification the wrench is indicated at 40 and is provided with an opening il therein through which the bolt loosely eX- tends. When it is desired to use the wrench it is pressed upwardly so that a projection 42 thereon will enter one of the grooves 37.
It will be understood that in some cases I prefer to mount and fasten the device on a sash in a position at right angles to that shown and described whereby the end of the bolt will be forced into locking engagement with the side of the window frame instead of with a second sash so that the fastener when in operative position, will hold against movement only the sash to which it is secured while permitting freedom of movement of the other sash if one obtains.
