Be it known that I, PEROIVAL d). BERRY, a citizen oi' the United States, residing at Brooklyn, inthe county Oi Kings and 'State of New York, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Bedivans, of which the following is a yspecilioation.

This invention relates to a combination bed and divan and in the present instance will be designated as a 'bediva-n, the lobject of this invention being to provide an improved structure of this `general class comprising in a general way a main or stationary sect-ion, a sliding section, and `a swinging back connected to said main section and to said sliding section whereby on flowering,

In the Prefered .form thereof herein shown and described, the mainvsection 'of the bed 2Q comprises a pair off-end .frames 2, each consisting of a horizontal end bar .3 and a pair of uprights "or legs t and v5. Each of the 1end Aframes, in the present instance lis shown as of angle iron construeu tion, :and the ztwo front legs and also the two rear legs are connected 'by a suitable framework lor truss-work 6 and 7 whereby they are .properly stiiifened and the spread- 4ing thereof prevented, this truss-work 6 at the ifront and 7 at ,the Yrear including what may be .termed lengthwise 'extending side bars 8 andQres'pectively. These end frames are suitably connected, by a metallic. -fabrc 'stretched'therebetween usually by means of coiled springs- The 'sliding Section 30 like- Wise comprises pair of. similarly .formed end iframes i9, each end. .frame having a pair :of depending legs 1,0 and 1 1, the inner ones of which however, es .1;1 being Shown shorter than the outer ones, and "these two end .frames are lilsefwise truss connected .in lthe manner ,heretofore described. .The end vframes of the sliding section also .have a metal fabric i12 stretched ntherebetween. The rear legs 'at leach .end of the sliding Asec- 'tion @are connected with the horizontal angle bars thereof by a curved brace 13 which acts as a cam -by 'its yengagement with the lengthwise extending side .-bar .8 connecting the two Jiront legs of the .main section. ln other words the metal rfabric and the hori- Zontal bars yto which it is connected are located between the side bar 8 and the metal 'fabric of themain section so that when the sliding section Vis shifted forward from under the main section 'these curved bars act as cams vin 'connection with the front side vbar and :gradually raise 'the :front section lso as to bring the rear side thereof level with the front side and for which purpose the legs at the rear of the sliding section are raised from the floor, these beingshorter than the legs at theouter end of the sliding section.

By thus raising the sliding section the metallic fabric thereof will be brought up close to the metallic fabric of the main section so that they will be practically level with each other and thus presentan even surface to sleep upon. Connected to the end frames of the main section at the rear side thereof is -the swinging back 40 which comprises likewise a pairv of end members 14 connected at their outer ends by a transversely extending member 15. These end members 14 carry a suitable fabric 16 stretched therebetween and are pivotally connected as at 17 to the end members of the main section 2() in such position that when the back islowered it will be level with the main section. Suitably pivoted to the end members 14 of the back are a pair of legs 18, link connected by suitable links 19 with the rear legs of the main section.

Riveted to the inner end of each of the end members 14 of the swinging back 40 is a forwardly extending bar 21, which bars 2l are connected together at their front ends` as at 22. r:lhis yoke-shaped member 21-22 is shown in. the present instance as of tubular form and of such weight as to act as a counter-balance to the swinging back. The bars 21 of the swinging back are provided with a pair of riveted plates or bars 23 to the forward ends of which are pivotally con- Inected a pair of links 24 which in turn are Zontal position, and on raising the back they will automatically position themselves up close against the rear of the back.

The construction is such that the weight of the back will automatically lower it and locking means is provided' therefor for maintaining the back in its upright divan-forining position, and in the present instance this locking means is a pedal releasable means and is of very simple construction. This locking means comprises a locking member or bar 25 provided with a pair of slots 26 for the receptionof headed pins '27 carried by the truss frame at the rear of the main section. The lower end of this locking'har is so shaped that it will engage the top face of the counter-balancingbar 22 and prevent it from moving forward and thus prevent the back from falling down.

To release the locking bar, a pair of levers 28 are pivotally connected to the bar one above the other and are also pivotally connected as at 29 to a part of the truss frame, and the outer ends of these levers 28 are provided with angle extensions 31v forming foot engaging means whereby the locking bar may be released at either side of the bed. ln otherwords by pushing on the ends 31, the bar is raised, thus unlocking the yoke-shaped member 21-22 whereupon the weight of the back lowers it, which operation as hereinbefore stated, shifts the sliding section forward from under the main section. By raising the back the sliding section is drawn under the main section and the locking bar falls of its own weight and engages the forward member 22 of the yokeshaped member and so automatically locks it in position and consequently the back in its upright position.. As khereinbefore eX- plained when the sliding section is shifted forward, the diagonal braces 13 slide over the edge of the front side bar 8 of the main section and raise the rear end of the sliding section to a position where it will be level with the front end of the sliding section so that its spring mattress will form substantially a continuation of that of the main and swinging back sections and thus form a full length bed.

The legs 18 are suitably braced by a cross member 32 and in the form of structure shown the various corners of the main and sliding sections are brace-connected as for instance 33 especially when they are formed of angle iron. From the foregoing it will be observed that, other than the links which connect the legs 18 of the swinging back to the legs of the main section, the only link connections-in the entire section is that between the swinging back and the sliding front section, which links constitute the extensions of the yoke-shaped bar which in turn constitute extensions of the end membersY of the swinging back so that the structure isvery simple in its organization, asl well as rigid and comfortable in use.

Y In the present instance the frontsliding section is shown somewhat narrower than the main section and the legs are provided with suitable castors to facilitate the shiftable movement thereof, while the legs ofthe main section may be provided with cdomes of silence. to facilitate the movement of the entire structure when this is necessary. In practice of course the bedivan is provided with suitable mattresses of book form arrangement, one for the back, one for the main section, and one for the sliding section, that of the sliding section being foldable over that of the main section when the sliding section is drawn under the main section, and the whole is suitably covered by an ornamental covering such as cretonne Leoaeae or other suitable material, whereby .the the bedivan presents an attractive appearance, takes up a comparatively small amount of room and at the same time when transformed into a three-section bed it provides a suitable structure to sleep upon.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the vmanipulation of the sliding section is obtained by the `operation of the swinging back which automatically falls on releasing the locking member from the yoke-shaped member 21--22 so that without Vthe use of the hands at all, the operator by merely placing his foot upon the releasing levers 28 and releasing the lock bar, permits the divan to automatically transform itself into a full length bed, and that to transform it into a divan it is merely necessary to raise the back until the lock engages. Consequently the structure is not only simple in operation but .can be very readily handled by a child or .a woman without the lifting of any heavy parts, especially as the yoke acts as a counter-balancing .means for the lback and assists materially in the raising Lof the back.

It is to be understood that the various details may be more or less changed without departing from the spirit or .scope of the invention.

In conclusion it will be vseen that a Very simple convertible bed structure is provided comprising a shiftable front section, a main section, and a swinging back section, which latter when released automatically positions itself level with the main section and at the same time automatically operates the shiftable front section into position also level with the main section, thereby converting the structure from a divan into a full length bed, while'the means for locking the back in its upright position is a` self locking means, that is an automatically operative locking means releasable from either end of the bed.

I claim as my invention:

l. In a bedivan the combination of a main section, a sliding section shiftable beneath the fabric of the main section, a swinging back section connected with the sliding section for shiftingy it, locking means, counterbalancing means for the back shiftable with the sliding section and cooperating with said locking means for maintaining the back in an upright position, and pedal means for releasing said locking means.

2. A bedivan comprising a main section, a sliding section, a swinging Vback section hinged to said main section, swinging counterbalancing means therefor, means connected to said Swinging counterbalancing means and with the sliding section whereby the latter is shifted at predetermined times by the swinging back section and the swinging counterbalancng means, locking means cooperating with said counterbalancing means for maintaining the back in position, and pedal means for releasing said locking means.

3. In aV bedivan the combination 'of a main section, a sliding section, a swinging back section, counterbalancing means for the'back section, locking means cooperating with the counterbalancing means formaintaining the back in position, and pedal means for releasing said locking means.

4. A bedivan comprising a main section, a sliding section, a swinging back section hinged to said main section, a forwardly extending yoke rigidly connected tothe back section, means for locking vsaid yoke and thereby the back section in its upright position, and means connecting the yoke with the sliding bed section, the construction being such that on the releasing of the locking means the back will fall of its own weight and automatically .shift the sliding section.

.A bedivan comprising a main section, a sliding section, a swinging back section hinged to said main section and adapted to fall into a horizontal position by its own weight, means for supporting it when in a horizontal position, means connecting it with the sliding section whereby the latter will he Vshifted on the falling of the back section, and locking means for locking said back sect-ion in its upright position and comprising a sliding bar, a pair of oppositely eX-V "section and located intermediate the ends thereof, and means shiftable into engagement with the locking means upon swinging the back section for automatically locking the back section in position, and means for releasing said locking means.

7 In a bedivan the combination of a main section, a sliding section, a. swinging back section hinged to the main section and connected with the sliding section for shifting it upon swinging the back section, locking means for maintaining the back section in upright position and comprising a shift-able latch carried by one of the sections and located beneath the same and between the ends thereof, and means connected to one of the sections for engaging the lat-ch, said latch and means being one shiftable into engagement with the other by swinging the back section.

8. A bedivan comprising a main section, a sliding section, a swinging back section hinged to said main section and connected with the sliding Section for shifting it, lock-v ing means carried by the main section adjacent to the `rear thereof for maintaining said back in its upright position and comprising a vertically slidable locking bar, and pedal means for sliding it. A bedivan comprising a main section, a sliding section, a swinging back section hinged to said mainsection and provided with a forwardly extending bar, means connecting said bar with the sliding section whereby the latter is shifted by the swinging back section, 4automatically operative locking means in position to engage said bar thereby to maintain the back in its upright position, and means for releasing said locking means from said bar, Y l0. A bedivan comprising a main section, a sliding` section, a swinging back section hinged to said main sect-ion and provided with a forwardly extending bar, means connecting said bar with the sliding section whereby the latter is shifted by the swinging back section, automatically operative locking means in position to engage said bar and located below the plane of the mattress portions thereby to maintain the back in its upright position, and means for releasing said locking means from said bar.

11. A bedivan comprising a main section, a sliding section, a swinging back section hinged to said main section, means connecting the swinging back section with the sliding section whereby the latter will be shifted on the falling of the back section, and locking means cooperating with said connecting means for automatically locking the back in its upright position, and means forreleasing said locking means from said connecting means.

12. Ink a bedivan the combination of a main section, a swinging back section hinged thereto, a sliding section shiftable beneath the fabric of the main section, a counterbalancing bar rigidly connected to said back section, converging levers connecting said counterbalancing bar with the sliding section, said counterbalancing bar having a swinging movement beneath the main section while the sliding section slides beneath the fabric of the main section.

13. In a bedivan the combination of a main section a sliding section shiftable beneath the fabric and between the ends thereof, a ,swinging back hinged to the main section and movable with the sliding section, a swinging U-shaped counterbalancing bar rigidly connected to theback and so connected with the sliding section as to swing beneath the fabric of the main section as the sliding section slides therebeneath.
