UNITE STATES `(rEOEtGrE A. MEISNER, 0F OAK PARK, ILLINOIS.
FOUNTAIN JSRUSH.
Application led YSeptemlroer o, 1923. Serial No. y661,287'.
T @ZZ whom z'zf may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. MnisNnR, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Brushes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved fountain brush for use in cleaning automobile bodies and the like, and onefobject of the invention is to provide a brush which may be connected with a hose so that water may be applied to the. body of the automi bile and dirt removed from the same without the finish being injured by becoming scratched. l l
Another object of the invention is to vso construct this device that vthe nozzle por tion thereof may include a hose-engaging nozzle and an outer cleaner-carrying nozzle which is adjustab'ly carried by the hoseengaging nozzle and will be provided with a valve seat co-operating with a valve head upon the hose-,engaging nozzle so that through adjustment of the cleaner-carrying nozzle, the liow of water may be readily controlled.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for releasably connecting the cleaner head with the cleanercarrying nozzle so that this cleaner head may be easily7 and quickly removed or put in place and securely held in the proper position when in place.
i This invention is illustrated in the ac- L10 eompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure Il is a view showing the improved hose attachment with the nozzles in longitudinal section and the cleaner head in elevation.
Figure 2 is a view showing the nozzles in side elevation.
Figures 3, l and 5 are sectional views taken along the lines 3 3, 4 4 and 5-5 respectively of Fig. 1.
This improved cleaning device has been provided with a hose-engaging nozzle indicated in general by the numeral l and a cleaner-carrying nozzle indicated in general by the numeral 2. These nozzles are adjustably connected so that the flow of water from the lioseengaging nozzle may be controlled by proper adjustment of the cleaner-carrying nozzle and further may be entirely removed one from the other so that the nozzles may be thoroughly cleaned when necessary.
The hose-engaging nozzle l has been provided with a socket portion 3 which is internally threaded as shownwat 4L in Fig. 1 and is provided along its outer face with the longitudinally extending ribs 5 so that this socket portion can be firmly gripped by the hand or by means cfa suitable wrench and this socket screwed firmly upon the usual coupling provided with a hose. The shank portion 6 extends forwardly from the socket 3 and is externally threaded as shown so that the cleaner-carrying nozzle 2 and a lock nut 7 may bescrewed upon the shank portion of this nozzle l. The forward end portion of this shank 6 terminates in a head 8 which forms a valve head and is tapered to provide an annular face through which enf tend the openings or ports 9. lThe water will pass through these openings) when the device is in use.
The cleaner-carrying nozzle 2 'is provided with an elongated shank portion l() which has its forwardend portion closed but providedwith a plurality of water outlet ports or openings 1l so that the water may be sprayed upon the cleaning brush carried by this nozzle. A socket portion l2 is provided for this nozzle 2 and internally threaded so that this socket portion 12 may be screwed upon the shank portion 6 of the socket l. At the junction of the shank l0 and socket 12, there has been provided an internal annular shoulder 13 which tapers towards the shank 10 and provides a valve seat for engagement by the tapered valve head S of the nozzle l. From an inspection of Fig. l, it will be readily seen that by turning the nozzle 2 upon the shank of the nozzle l, the valve seat may be moved into and out of closing engagement with the valve head. After the nozzle1 2 has been adjusted upon the nozzle l to the proper point,'the lock nut 7 may be screwed into tight engagement with the rear end of the socket l2 and the nozzle 2 will be securely but releasably locked in the desired position.
The cleaner head will be provided with strands formed of yarn or other soft material in the preferred form. It will be under- Vwork to be performed. e, These strands 14 will be secured between the twists of the wires 15 and will extend radially yfrom these wires. The end portions of certain of the strands will extend in close contact'with the end portion of the nozzle 2 when the brush head is in place and thereforethe brush head may be thoroughly saturated with the water. The end portions of the wires eX- tend beyond the bristles or strands 14 and provide twisted stem portions 16 which are passed through perforated ears 17 carriedy by the nozzle 2. These stems 16 extend longitudinally along the socket 12 and are engaged by a clamp 18 which fits about the socket 12 and has' been provided with odset portions forming pockets 19 to receive the stems 16. VThis clamp 18'is provided with the usual tightening bolt 2O so that the clamp may be drawn tightly into a clamping position( It VVwillthus be seen vthat the brush head may be Ysecurely heldin place but may be removed when desired. t will be further noted that the size of thel circular portion formedV by the twisted wiresmay be changed somewhat according to the extent the stems 16 are projected through the ears 17.
Y When this device is in use, the hose-engag- Ving nozzle 1 will be screwed onto the usual coupling` at the end of a hose and the nozzle 2 can then be adjusted to permit the desired amount of water to flow through the same from the nozzle 1. The lock-nut 7 can then Vbe tightened to secure the 'nozzle' 2 in the ,adjusted position or this nut 7 may be left loose in case cleaning is to be performed ywhich requires the flow of water to be plained, the brush may be removed and a new one easily and quickly put in place and further whenso desired, the nozzle 2 may be entirely removed from thenozzle 1 so that the two nozzles may be thoroughly cleaned.y
I claim: Y Y i Y f A fountain brush comprising a brush head composed of bristles and a looped twisted wire core'constituting a retainer for said bristles, the free ends of said core being extended inwardlybeyond said head, a fluid supply nozzle having yanelongated distributor disposed for discharging fluid into the center of said head, said nozzle being equipped with substantially diametrically opposed apertured ears, the free ends of said core passing through and inwardly beyond said ears, and a clamping band encircling said'nozzle Vand having Vdianietrically opposed outwardly bent portions forming pockets for reception ofthe extremities of said free ends.
1 In testimony whereof affixed my signature.
